I know, thanks. Wouldn't help if you're away (edit - or it's stolen) though. [Post edited 27 Dec 2024 14:13]

What would best support device be please if iPhone were lost or stolen? on 14:44 - Dec 27 with 1365 views | Meadowlark | There are other manufacturers of phones. I know I-phone users don't understand this and Apple have done a fantastic brainwashing job, but just saying.
What would best support device be please if iPhone were lost or stolen? on 14:47 - Dec 27 with 1352 views | DJR | I've always had an Android phone, but always bought them sim free, and never had a really swanky phone. There comes a time whatever the operating system that the system ceases to be updated, or compatible with certain updated apps, and at that time I buy another phone. But I hang on to the previous version of the phone, and take it on holiday as a back-up, along with a spare sim card I can top up, because it will have sufficient functionality for many things. As regards burner phones (by which I mean phones without internet), my daughter's recent experience in France is that they may well not work abroad as a backup especially if they are 2G phones which I think they often are. EDIT: my son is currently on a year abroad, and at my prompting he bought the following phone (at around £50) as a backup to his I-phone if he were to lose it, along with an 02 sim which does not incur roaming charges. It is a relatively small phone and has Android 14 which is pretty up to date. And it gets 4 stars. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/3181658?msockid=180aad502c546fef21cdb8322dcb6efa [Post edited 27 Dec 2024 15:20]

I have had other makes of phones but prefer the apple iPhone and how well it integrates with my other apple devices. I wasn't brainwashed.

That's very helpful, thanks, but like GB I want something that will immediately integrate with my other devices, which are now all iOS - my current iPhone 13 is 3 yrs old but my previous phone was Android (Samsung Galaxy). In fact I want something which is virtually 'paired' with my current phone so if that one's disappeared for whatever reason, I can turn to the replacement & use without even having to think about it. But can't be too expensive, so thought of 'burner' phones which I must admit I knew nothing about - thought from crime dramas that they were the phone equivalent of cheap disposable cameras! So maybe a recon iPhone, but have no idea if they're reliable/safe/a good buy or not.

That's exactly what an Android bot would say! I've had both systems over the years; my preference for iOS is based entirely on road-testing over a decade to date :)

😂 I definitely do prefer Android these days, I was never a fan of the Apple ecosystem, it's always felt too restrictive and locked down. However I completely understand why people use Apple, it simplifies a lot of things. My mum loves it as she's in her 70s and wants things simple.

So do I. All Apple devices I’ve had last longer, work better and are more intuitive to use. Given how long they last me compared to Android/PCs, they’re cheaper too (or better value for money more accurately).

I suspect it depends on how much your spent on the Android/PCs in the first place. If you bought cheap android phones then they won't last that long. My OnePlus 7 has lasted over 5 years and still runs very well. Likewise my Dell XPS laptop is coming on for 6 years now and it still works great (I did go for top specs when I bought it in the first place). Overall I'd say there really isn't much difference between machines and kit these days, it's often the software that is the differential. Everybody has their preference.

My iMacs were/are 13 years old and going strong. I’ve only just put the oldest into retirement for a PC (I keep trying them). It’s gone back for repairs after 3 days. I’ve never got more than 3-4 years out of work PCs/laptops, but they won’t be high specs so that’s understandable. I just prefer Macs. You plug them in and they work straight away. None of the faff you have to put up with with a PC. All the constant updates, having to optimise, component failures, etc.

Macs are great, first one still going 10 years later, second one going fine 4 years in - but their weak point is definitely the keyboard - first one the 'e' wore out after 2 years; second one both 'e' and 'r' jammed after 2 years. Magic keyboard replacements on top work OK, but have no backlight, which is a pain.
