What is it you like best about Trumpy? The bigotry, the corruption, the criminality, the noncery or the Putin licking?

Never hated anyone so much on 10:21 - Mar 1 with 1242 views | Guthrum | Trump couldn't get his quick win on peace in Ukraine, so he's looked for someone else to take the blame - so far as the US electorate is concerned - via the traditional method of handing Zelensky an impossible ultimatum (sign the extortionate mining deal in return for virtually nothing). Mind you, that's not so different from Palmerston's mid-19th century gunboat diplomacy, or how we dealt with China during the Opium Wars.

Or ‘tribute’ imposed by the Romans, theft by the Vikings and plundering and murder by the Belgians and Germans in Africa before WW1. One would have hoped that we’d moved on from extortion of this kind after the events of 80 years ago, especially western countries. America has decided against that. Authoritarianism rules! America Second!! Trump and his sycophantic dribble lickers First!!! [Post edited 1 Mar 11:34]

It's a war Ukraine can not win now. A war the West has tired of. It is about making it clear, like it or not, Putin will emerge the winner and Ukraine has the chance to negotiate some sort of honourable take the best deal you can get, non-surrender. That is has to be played out so publicly is not great, but even out of camera it would have been played out. The fact is that it is being played out publically, One for Trump's ego and 2 to send the message firmly to the wider Ukraine people. If it was behind closed door the wider message would have been positive meeting sharing of view, blah, blah. The message is firmly, Zelensky needs to stop being an action hero, face reality and as the Ukraine intelligentsia are now fully briefed it could be that Z will be forced aside to make way for somone prepared to face the realities, compromise their position and come to a deal, hopefully with security guarantees.

There will be no security guarantees. That is the issue. Those guarantees are 2% of the deal according to Trump. So why not agree to them? Because he has no intention of doing it once he has the mineral contract. Ukraine are not stupid. Putin has gone back on his word before and they naturally want assurance it won't happen again. It's not a war which Russia can win easily, either. They have blown through much of their own best equipment and troops. The "advance" on the eastern front is a sub-WWI crawl at enormous cost in manpower for minimal gains. Apart from the air campaign, everywhere else is pretty quiet. They haven't even manged to force Ukraine out of Kursk. The Europeans and, crucially, Kyiv have already ramped up things like shell production, the meat and potatoes of that kind of warfare. Meanwhile Moscow has had to convert to pretty much a wartime economy, while still unable to stop Ukraine's own air raids on its oil infrastructure. The West is still perfectly happy to see Putin occupied by this war and, if anything, their resolve and cohesion are likely to be boosted by Trump's shenanigans. The EU/UK bloc economically outweighs Russia by about 15 to 1, without the addition of the likes of Canada, Japan and South Korea. They can afford it.
