Ipswich "escapes" 16:50 - Feb 26 with 1078 viewsSaffronWaldenBlues

Being one of the younger, but not too much younger, people here, what great escapes has Ipswich managed historically? The season of my birth was 85/86, and I obviously have been told how sad/painful of a drop that was.

The only proper relegation escape I have seen in my life was 1993/94 when we managed to scrape free, although young I remember that feeling a bit like winning a World Cup, only to experience the misery of 1994/95 at the age when football meant everything, the Premier League was all the playground was interested in and we were awful. The other "escapes" I lived through were 2012/13 and 2016/17 in the Championship under Mick McCarthy, in fact in 2017 I think we were only a few points off the drop. However, they didn't feel much like escapes at the time.

Obviously, in 2001/02, we went into the final 5 games needing a couple of wins, and a draw and won just one of them, even getting battered by a jubilant Bolton (I was there...) and of course there was the 2018/19 season where Paul Hurst relegated us in August without a ball being kicked.

From recollection 84/85 was a scare, and the outcome went down to the last game of the season and changed on the day as the results in the various games changed.

Here is a link to the final table showing 7 teams within 3 points of each other.

I think I listened to it on the radio and it was very nerve-racking as the scores changed.

83/84 has been mentioned on a couple of threads. We were absolutely cooked going into the last nine or ten games but we basically went unbeaten, including results at Anfield and Old Trafford to not only survive but finish 12th. There was a huge cluster of teams involved though, unlike this year.

84/85 was closer. Norwich went down similar to how we did a year later. Coventry beat an understrength Everton 'after' the season to relegate them. I think Everton had a Euro final a few days later.

I was at a post-wedding meal for a relative, and the master of ceremonies kept being handed bits of paper (before i-phones) that he introduced by saying things like "I've no idea what this means but, I'm told Chelsea have just equalised" - cue big cheers / groans etc, accompanied by shaking of the head and tut-tutting from some.

2017 wasn't really an escape, we only finished as close to the bottom 3 as we did because we lost our last three games. 2013, we ended up safe reasonably comfortably in the end thanks to some magic work from Big Mick. I guess technically it was an escape, but not one with much suspense.

Yeah 83/84 - 4 points from safety with 6 games left having lost 11 of the last 14.

5 wins and a draw at Liverpool (champions) was an incredible finish.

84/85 we were not in quite so much peril. The incredible story is Norwich. We (older fans) all know Coventry done them after the season had finished when Everton fielded the likes of Neill Rimmer but Norwich were 8 (Eight!) points clear of relegation after the "last day" of the normal season. Coventry actually played and won three re-arranged fixtures after Norwich had completed their season.

Also, West Ham were a point below Norwich after the "last day" with two games left. They lost to Liverpool but guess where they achieved safety? Portman Road!

Not technically true as Mick said that he couldn’t find any players to improve the team.

We bought Freddie Sears so that's a true statement.

Sadly at no time have the escapes been warning signs that led to re-evaluation and inprovement. We always ignored the signs or did not improve the team enough to avoid next season's relegation. Apart from maybe the early 70's.
