After years of being a bit pompous about having home and away fans mixed togther, Leicester and Saracens are planning on trialing segregation to improve the atmosphere at games. Other teams are expressing an interest too.

Is this something to be pleased about? I think it's a sad indictment of today's society and makes any relaxation of some of British football's stringent laws e.g. the alcohol ban even further away.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

It's not any sort of indictment of society. They aren't considering it because they have to, not because they have had any sort of trouble. They are considering it as a method of improving the atmosphere at games.

Perhaps this will force them to learn some other songs rather than just constantly singing Ttiiigggeeerrrss. It won’t make a joy of difference, everyone is either too pissed or too busy getting pissed.

It feels, though, as if they're trying to improve atmosphere by making the whole thing more tribal, which would be a backward step in my opinion.

Bit of an old story. Sarries are the least liked Premier Rugby club, so it's no surprise to hear they are all for it! Most Rugby fans are completely against any kind of fan segregation & value the mixing together very highly. It won't happen except for Saracens.

The tribalism is the best thing about football support.

The issues arise when the tribalism turns into hooliganism, which is very rare these days.

When something goes wrong, or perceived to go wrong, why is it always a sad indictment of today’s society? Like bad things never happened in the past.

I agree - and didn't explain myself very well. Some of the football violence prior to WWI and that era was far in excess of what might be considered a scuffle today.

However after years of not needing segregation, it's sad that rugby even needs to consider it. Whether the driver is fans not getting on or some need to generate some perception of what constitutes 'atmosphere' to market the game for the Tik Tok and Insta generation. We've seen what it's done to football and it's wealthier and poorer for it at the same time.
There are definitely elements of today's society that are sad,

Club rugby is considering it in an attempt to generate more atmosphere, not because it is needed for security reasons.
Now if they could stop the tedious dirge of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" at Twickenham, that would be an achievement.

Its not so much segregation, as giving away fans a section to congregate together.... anyone can still buy tickets anywhere, but they hope that a bit more cohesion will bring better atmospheres.... I think its an interesting trial.... will end up I guess a bit like in cricket, where barmy army etc tend to sit together to create a section, even though the grounds are unsegregated.

The Barmy Army are a tedious blight on cricket, especially by the middle of the afternoon. Thank god they don't seem to have infiltrated Lord's & I haven't really been away of them at The Oval.
