Should have least secured a point away from home. 14 shots with 2 on target is the issue.

72% posession is impressive but as we all know it's what you do with it. Again being honest I couldn't watch the game today but unless we did a Reading under Jaap Stam some encouraging signs no?

You don't win many games of football with passing numbers like that.

Yeah it wasn't as bad as most are making out.

Disappointing of course, lacked tempo and chemistry but we did more than enough to win that game playing not very well.

Hirst chance has to go in, McAteer chance should go in and then there is a very different feeling about the place.

Onto Derby.

For sure, looks like Google isn't great on pass statistics, but seem to recall our pass % was much higher than PNE's when I was checking in on the game.

Shooting was a major part of the problem. Their keeper didn’t have a single save to make. They were stronger, more cynical and wanted it more than us. We clearly had the quality but lacked confidence and ideas.

You don’t win games on stats though - yet to score from open play despite spending close to 150m in the last two seasons. If anything the stats back up the gulf in quality- better end product is needed, and I think it’s immature to call that bedwetting (not aimed at OP). Not unreasonable to question the output with so much money spent and a team with few changes from last year.

Except we have scored from open play and why would it matter if we had scored 10 goals from set pieces and 0 from open play anyway?

Oh totally agree that Stats don't win games, but I posted the OP as a means of reference as to how the match went.

Tweak those stats somewhat and the whole mood music on here is different.

For context, I haven't seen our possession stats being above 40% throughout last season. (Feel free to correct me)

Yep can question money spent, but also the management team will be looking at player stats from their GPS's. Stats are an indicator of perfomance levels and for me taken at arms length we should have at least taken a point if not all 3 based on those figures.

One goal in three games from a fortuitous deflection. It matters because goals win games and right now we have 2 points out of 9. We look like we could play for hours without scoring, I don’t see why that’s controversial. We could be adrift very quickly if we don’t improve.

I think last season has had more of an effect on the players than people realise. We look totally devoid of any confidence in front of goal with players taking too many touches or putting in another pass when a shot is the better option.

We are also very lightweight up front still. The three behind Hirst get pushed off the ball far to easily for me. Lack of physicality cost us last season and is still a problem.

The difference between this season and our previous season in Championshipis in thr mindset.

Two years ago we expected to score, this it seems we lack urgency and just hope to score.

Next Saturday we play below us in the tsble eho conceded 5 against Coventry. Should we fluff our chances than, and only then, shoulde we be concerned. A must win game.

Funny thing stats.

All season. How many shots on target have we had?

And how much possession against Preston and Birmingham before they scored and decided to let us have more ball and stay solid?

Funny thing stats.

We are very poor. And have been for a long time. 4 wins in 42 is a long term stat that speaks the truth.

72% possession is probably what I would expect from a team that were favourites chasing the game for 80+ minutes.

The result always dictates the narrative, but the circumstances of the game also influence the stats. Had we taken the lead after 11 minutes I dare say it would’ve been very different, but they had a lead to defend for 90% of the game and were very happy to sit and defend it. We had a lot of the ball but it was largely in front of their deep defensive line and they looked quite happy with that. We looked toothless, we barely threatened to score. 1 or 2 half chances aside we didn’t create a lot at all.

A really disjointed performance and across the 3 games so far we’ve offered very little offensively and there’s a real lack of cohesion at the moment. I don’t like Szmodics in that 10 role at all, he’s a 2nd striker he’s not a playmaker. Chaplin is better suited to it stylistically but he was really poor when he came on. Clarke on the right didn’t work at all, he’s clearly talented but he’s as soft as sh1t and such a frustrating watch. I really like Philogene but can’t help feel his presence on the left stifles Davis’ space. I’d much rather see him off the right, Szmodics left in a more inverted role and I think Akpom might be the answer in the 10. He’s clearly got a lot of ability I liked the look of him technically.

A lot of work to do, the sort of work that ideally we would’ve been doing through July in pre season. I’m not too downbeat and think we’ll get there, still early days and 129 points to play for, but we need some wins pretty quickly while this new squad knits together.
