I think there’s a decent chance that, had we avoided relegation, then Harrison’s commentary of Ian Atkins’s goal against Oxford would have been included when the outside of the ground was refurbished a few years ago. Commentary is from 32:00
Edit - I’ve just realised that there must be a few of Gerry’s lines already on the stadium from the 70s and 80s.

Thanks for posting. In isolation one of my favourite ever moments at Portman Road. Everyone in the ground, including the players judging by their celebrations, seemed to think that that was enough to keep us up.
Ridiculous that we were relegated after our season was over, with Oxford beating a disinterested Arsenal with nothing to play for on Bank Holiday Monday. One of the few changes to the game for the better since then is that the last day of the league season kicks off at the same time for all team.

In an ideal world, they should have played that Arsenal game in the week between the Milk Cup Final and the game at Portman Road. But the winter freeze was brutal that year and there were so many matches to make up for, that some overspill was inevitable.
It would all have been irrelevant if we hadn’t folded from 3-0 up at the Manor Ground in November though…

Probably one of the hardest ive ever celebrated a goal, then as you say we were done by a disinterested Arsenal v Oxford after everybody else had finished.

Absolute scenes that day. Oxford, to be fair, travelled bloody well too that day.
Definitely a proto Sarmiento day which was unfortunately soured a few weeks later by Arsenal leaving their boots in the changing room at the Manor Ground.
I'm pretty sure there was a testimonial match at PR on the day of our relegation, may have been Ron Gray's? Anyway, I done my ankle going down some steps and without the luxury of mobile phones to call my dad to pick me up and no buses on a Sunday/bank holiday, struggled home for 2 hours in time to watch Joe Johnson beat Steve Davis at the Crucible with my foot up, throbbing away and bandaged up.
Amazing how things from nearly 40 years ago stick and something that happened last week completely exits the brain.

Thanks for posting. I just spotted myself in churchman’s. Wasn’t a bad team but really struggled to find the net that season.
We had an absolutely insane amount of 0-1's that season.
The killer though was two 3-4 reverses in a row. Yes, from 3 up at Oxford but also being 2 up on Everton (current champs) either the week before or after.

It was ludicrous back then how the season was often not completed on the scheduled day. We were poor away that year, the Oxford game stands out. Bit better at home, interesting that although we only had 2 more home games than last season we won at Portman Road EIGHT times more.
Veni Vidi Participatur. Now we can get back to competing.

In that 1985/6 season in retrospect it seemed that relegation was inevitable but we weren't getting regularly smashed, we were defensively solid but we had no goalscoring threat at all.
It was disappointing as our younger players like Brennan and Dozzell were starting to gain experience at that level. Instead of spending 1986-1989 playing in the top flight they had to suffer John Duncan football instead
"Amazing how things from nearly 40 years ago stick and something that happened last week completely exits the brain." Agree with that. What a strange season that was. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. Still seems odd now to see goalkeepers able to pick up a back pass, the state of the pitches at that time, the empty gaps in the terraces etc.

I think our relegation had been a long time coming, with a steady decline after Robson moved on & the break-up of his great side being near completed with the departure of Gates, Osman & Burley. The devastating loss at Oxford in Terry Butcher's second game back after a long absence was John Hallworth's debut. The win over Oxford was followed by an unfortunate 2-1 defeat at title chasing West Ham as a result of a highly dubious, late penalty. I was still naive enough to think Arsenal might put in a performance at Oxford, but they turned up in their flip-flops & we had the spectacle of Robert Maxwell joining in a lap of honour.

for sure, if we had escaped that year, the hungry jaws of relegation would have chewed us up the next season.

It was but that's not the game I'm referencing.
I'm talking about when our relegation was confirmed after the seasons end and we had an end of season testimonial game going on.
Did we? We had a testimonial for Paul Cooper in March & the visit of the Budgies attracted only 4,476 fans. Home crowd average was, 14,500 that season.

Definitely did. I'm sure it was for Ron Gray maybe against the 78 or 81 team.
