Could the Lino not have a can of the disappearing fspray the ref has for free kicks to mark where it went off and where it should be taken from? When I referee I shout to the player "in line with me please" - mostly when the ball goes off on a narrow angle for a long distance (these are mostly park pitches) but also if they have been wandering up to gain ten plus years. |  | | |

You would need two more additional assistant refs.
There isn’t an answer. If you say it will be a foul throw if taken more than x metres from the point the ball went out of play you can guarantee none will be taken from the right place.
I can recall Tarrico having problems with a fussy linesman so much so that he ended up asking the Lino if he was in the right place. Crafty time wasting!
Refs try to keep the game flowing unless it is blatant best let go. |  |

I don't think its a hard one to stop. The ref and assistant know where the ball went out, they just need to insist on the throw being taken from the correct place, it's as simple as that. Refs only seem to enforce it when nearby fans make the point. |  | | |

Trouble with that is time wasting. Attempt to take the throw, get pushed back, stop short and get pushed back again. |  |

The weirdest thing about this is that players routinely gain a ten yard advantage in this way, when the "offence" is frequently an accident, and yet when a three v two break is stopped by a deliberate act of cheating, refs will micro-manage the free kick and move it back by less than a yard to stop the attacking side "gaining an unfair advantage". Meanwhile the whole defensive team has trotted back and flooded the penalty area.

The Lino was literally following Fisher along the line as he trotted along before finally taking the throw. Quite a few in front of me were getting quite rattled by it. | | | |
