When will the consistent patterns emerge? - to truly kick start season and fans 14:29 - Nov 27 with 905 viewsunstableblue

Don’t get wrong me our current trajectory and the points tally is good. And I’m normally looking at a Town team and season through a positive blue lens.

But if we’re really serious about the second automatic place and building momentum for a positive Premier league campaign - then clear and effective patterns of play - for more than just spurts - really need to come to the fore.

We’ve had patches of really good play, and I thought we’d kick on from Norwich game, where our identity looked clear - but it’s stalled a bit.

It’s a combination of speed of play and patterns of passing between players who know their role and their colleagues needs. It’s about making those overloads, those overlaps and those cutbacks/through-balls work, and work regularly.

Obviously staying robust - which is actually improving, OShea is looking dependable and robust, AND of course the low block at home is killing our ability to get early goals. But we need more pace and guile.

Hull away was a good result, but the league is lower quality than expected (bar a few), and that first half our patterns were very poor, and they carved chances, and our heads could have dropped.

Saints have the players to kick on, maybe also Boro.

Home to Wrexham was again patternless at times, lack of a cohesive plan and urgency.

Hoping Oxford we can really get some incisive play going. For large periods. And then Coventry is going to require a special Norwich type display. And maybe could be a turning point?

The fans are still not fully on board, although there was enough endeavour second half against Wrexham to get decent applause at the end. But we now need some rip roaring displays, that the value of the squad merits.

I believe McKenna, Egeli, Akpom, Philogene, Nunez and Taylor can deliver this.

I've got a bit of a feeling Coventry (H) might be the day we see a few things click. We're due a performance at home, and they're a side who might show a bit more ambition than a few of the more recent opponents.

I'm hoping the lack of international breaks now will help us. Each time we went into a break, we won convincingly, Sheff U, Nodge and Swansea and it would have helped us to have a game right after.

This 10 game feast between now and FAC weekend could be pivotal for us with our squad depth.

You say that but Leicester pretty much stumbled to the title with clever squad management in the year we got promoted. They were simply able to bully teams with their strength in depth, with quite a few of their fans questioning Maresca at the time!

Ideally it will all click into place but I dont think you can underestimate the importance of the squad rotation and management which will hopefully become more apparent over the next couple of months.

Also, we made Hull look very ordinary on Tuesday night, despite not being at our best (and not the first time we have done that this season) We might not be playing the free flowing football of previous years, but we are becoming a very effective football team.

I think a large part of the problem has been the way teams have set up against us.

Apart from Birmingham away, teams have been keen to keep it tight and rely on the counter-attack even when they are at home.

That makes them difficult to break down and for us to play in a free-flowing way.

Even an attacking team like Hull (and at home) set up to prevent us playing.

But recent away games in particular have shown how well we can play once we get ahead. And hopefully we are improving all the time at breaking teams down as the players get to know each other.

Totally agree. Continue playing like we are and you'd think we're a good bet for top 6 however you'd expect it not to be enough for automatic, as at least one side will put together a really good run (probably Southampton).

However if we do start to hit a higher gear, and these patterns of play emerge, and we start to really put teams under the cosh and to the sword, like we were expecting start of the season, 2nd place is there for the taking.

I thought the bigger problem on Tuesday was the execution - players were moving into space and their team mates were looking for the pass to play them - i.e the patterns were there. They then just completely failed to execute them - passes either being under or over hit or the player receiving the ball totally failing to control it.
