If there’s anyone with some insider knowledge on this please let me know.
It really pees me off when you land back in England or anywhere and they have the “E-Gates”, although half of them aren’t even turned on.
Why? Why are they not turned on? They are electric, surely requires zero manpower. I understand if there’s desks shut because they haven’t got the staff, but electric gates ffs. Games gone. |  |

Unrelated, but finally Brexit has a benefit for me here in Czecho. Now they’ve introduced (or haven’t, I don’t know, but the queuing system is in place) the ETIAS, I can’t go in the non-EU queue because I am a permanent resident (so don’t actually need to register for it, and I can’t go in the EU queue because my passport isn’t EU. So they have a dedicated booth for “UK passport holders permanently resident in the EU” (or something), staffed by a real human, so I just waltz through. Thanks, Boris! |  | | |

I’m a regular visitor to Geneva, Mrs Balcombe is from the French side.
There is always a huge queue for the non EU line, even though Switzerland isn’t in the EU.
Anyway….i just join her in the EU queue. Speak a bit of French and they let me through no problems. |  | | |

Because when an e-gate refuses entry (doesn't work) the human gets annoyed/emotional and demands a human to ask why. Rather than simply accept it didn't work for them at that moment and go and join manual queue.
So they need sufficient staff to simply direct the moaning humans to the manual queue.

Problem is the time it takes people to get through these E Gates is longer than doing the snakes and ladders in the normal queues.
I also find the constant shouting at people a real welcome when arriving in the UK. |  |

For some reason, I was noticing the changes on my recent trip out to Italy through France and then driving back through Switzerland and France.
- A major refit at Folkstone Eurounnel terminal for the new electronic biomarker scanners, which they can't use as it causes too much queing. Money wasted.
- Queues weren't too bad going out at all, but rarely were. No change. A bit worse coming back, but that could always be a pain. No change.
- Increased bank and credit card fees in some instances. A bit selective and not huge, but adding cost.
- Can't port home streaming channels any more onto TVs. Whiny kids.
- Couldn't watch the opening Town game on my UK NowTV subscription, so had to pay $30 for the privilge of a monthly Now.it subscription for one match. So much winning.
Nothing major, just all minor inconveniences or extra/wasted costs. But I'm glad someone has found something useful come out of the debacle. |  |

The Entry/Exit System infrastructure you saw is apparently ready to be used. Waiting for the French to give the green light which is expected in October. |  |

Found the same at Stansted on the hottest day of the year. E gates don't like heat apparently and were bombing out most passport data reads. So having queued an age for malfunctioning machines I had to requeue for the manual booths and only 4 were manned. And of course it had to be my queue where an American from a film production company was trying to blag his way in with no passport which stopped the queue moving for 20 minutes. That did not help the mood after a long day's travel. | | | |
