I agree O Shea hasn't really put a foot wrong, but he is a better centre back then right back. We will certainly want to play him there for some games, where he can move over to slot into right centre back at times, but it would be unfair to expect him to have, and he doesn't, the movement or attacking threat from a more natural right back | |

I would like to think so because if he hasn't been signed to play at right back then I'm not exactly sure what the plan was with him so far, other than to be a utility man to thrown on wherever he's needed. [Post edited 3 Sep 13:25]

Playing O'Shea at RB is a better selection than dropping Diop, moving O'Shea to CB bringing in Ouatarra at RB. | | | |

Surely he's played more for Ireland at centre back, no?
I really would be puzzled if we've spent all of this money (seemingly rather well - no gripe there) with the intention of using a square peg in a round hole. This is not the Luke Chambers era.

I really would be puzzled if we've spent all of this money (seemingly rather well - no gripe there) with the intention of using a square peg in a round hole. This is not the Luke Chambers era.

I hope not, I want him to be starting soon, super high ceiling, people are sleeping on him after SWE last year calling him young etc.
Ouattara has played 50 games in top French league and 10 in Europe. Hopefully becomes are Sadiki type in the next couple years. |  |

He was very highly rated in the Strasbourg academy and walked into first team football pretty seamlessly. He could easily lock down a starting spot if he impressed in a given position.

Well, that would be absolutely necessary part, Davis is pretty robust.

Wouldn't say it's particularly unusual to line-up with a right back that's played most of their previous football at centre back. There's a lot of other teams that do it (Arsenal and Man City for two).

I’m pretty sure that’s incorrect (but happy to be proved wrong). Ireland have been playing a back 3 for at least 2 years and he plays on the left of the 3 normally and sometimes in the centre. He played two Nations League matches against Greece and Finland in the autumn of 2024 at right back. Before then, he’d only played once at RB for Ireland in 2020 against Bulgaria. Those two Nations League games in 2024 under Hallgrímsson were unusual enough that they were singled out in this analysis:
“Left centre-back is his most frequent starting role (19 times in 30 appearances). Prior to Helsinki last week, he had played once for Ireland at right-back (0-0 v. Bulgaria in Dublin, November 2020).”

Since then he’s gone back to CB and mostly on the left. I’ve checked every match report through the last two seasons as I thought I was going nuts with all this talk of him being a right back.
He’s CB who very rarely covers other defensive positions. If he was a natural, accomplished right back surely at least one person would have mentioned him previously as a possible solution to our RB issues we’ve had on and off over the last couple of years? [Post edited 3 Sep 21:40]

White has been converted to a RB and has years of experience in the role, he’s not a CB filling in and offers a lot going forward. Khusanov yes, he’s closer. He’s rapid though.
O’Shea at RB isn’t the worst idea. He’s a better footballer than Furlong and Fatawu doesn’t really need overlapping runs from him. It also means Leif has a bit more licence to get forward with O’Shea holding the defensive line. It’s not a bad position to be in but doesn’t play to O’Shea’s strengths at the same time imo. | |
