Town Legend Sir Bobby Robson Dies

Legendary Town manager Sir Bobby Robson has died at the age of 76. Robson, who managed the Blues from 1969 to 1982, had been battling cancer for the fifth time.

Robson, who also managed Fulham, England, PSV, Sporting Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona and Newcastle, led Town to the 1978 FA Cup and the 1981 UEFA Cup during the club's most successful decade.

Cancerous nodules were discovered in Robson's lungs in May 2007 and he had been undergoing treatment since then.

It wasn't his first fight against the disease. In 1992 he overcame bowel cancer then and a mouth cancer three years later. In May 2006 he underwent surgery when a tumour was found on his lung after a skiing accident.

Three months later Robson had surgery to remove a brain tumour which was revealed by tests after the former England boss was taken ill at the Blues' opening game of the 2006/07 season against Crystal Palace.

On Sunday he was presented with a UEFA Order of Merit award at a match between his 1990 England side and Germany at St James's Park which raised funds for his Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

Robson will be greatly missed by all in football, not least Town supporters. Add your tributes in the comments section below.

Was in the pub lunchtime when I heard the news. I held up my beer and said God bless the Great Man. Was disappointed that Sky managed to get through his obituary without one mention of Ipswich Town. It was like some of those sitters you see where it's easier to hit the target than to miss but they manage to miss anyway.

Thanks for the inspiration Sir Bobby. Too young for your Ipswich exploits, but was with you all the way on the national team. Met you in Hong Kong a few years ago. Felt very proud. Every bit the person I imagined. Hope another one like you comes along soon...

A true legend of the game, but also so much more than that. I learnt about football from Sir Bobby's Town sides of the 70's and 80's and my love of ITFC and the wider game is down to him. I suspect we will never see his like again and football and beyond is a poorer place today.
RIP Bobby, we will always love you.

Have spent most of the last 48 hours in quiet reflection. So much of my own life has been tied up in watching this man's football. I cannot remember a time that Sir Bobby has not been a part of my life. I hope that those celebrating his life will take on his mantle of decency, integrity and passion for life - if and when that happens the world will be a better place.
