Bruce Confirmed as Captain
Bruce Confirmed as Captain
Thursday, 27th Aug 2009 16:40

Town boss Roy Keane has confirmed that Alex Bruce will continue to wear the captain’s armband, as revealed by TWTD earlier in the week. Bruce skippered the side at West Brom and Peterborough in place of Gareth McAuley, who has captained the side since joining the Blues at the start of the 2008/09 season.

Keane told the club site: "Alex is taking on the role for now. I spoke to Gareth before I left him out of the team at West Brom and he's been professional about it, as you would expect.

"He is coming back from a fairly long injury and sometimes it's important for players to solely focus on getting back to full fitness, so for the time being Alex has taken on the armband.

"He plays at the back and like midfield, it's a good position to captain from. I know he's a bit young, but I think he has the potential to be a good skipper."

You can't say he hasn't earned it.

Happy with that. The way he banged that goal in against Crystal Palace and then kissed the badge in front of the North Stand makes him a committed and worthy captain in my opinion.

From out on his ear to club captain, in just a couple of months. How things can turn round.

Controversial suggestion I know, but if he is half the captain that his dad was, he'll be well worth the job.

I suspect he's the kind of player who will flourish with the responsibility. And, of course, Keane has know him since he was a mere nipper.

Leads with his heart, even if sometimes not with his head.

some people say he isnt a good enough player, but the captaincy shouldnt just be given to your best player. Bruce shows all the passion, desire and committment, that most of our current squad dont show and is well deserved in my opinion.

Pleased to hear that Keano has at last seen sense in making Alex Bruce the captain, he fully deserves it as you can see he is a true blue and always puts 100 per cent into his play. WELL DESERVED!

Agree with decision, bt all those who dnt think he should be captain please tell me...WHO THE HELL SHOULD? No one wants McAuley 2 ave it, only other candidate is Wrighty, bt it dosn't always work havin a keeper with the armband.
Suggestions please...?

Never really been happy about McAuley as captain, even though I think he's a good player. Brucie is probably the less polished player, but a better captain. I'd perhaps like to see him in midfield, though, in a defensive role. Not sure he's the complete answer at the back. But he really gives his all wherever and whenever he plays, and that deserves respect.

Another excellent decision from RK. There still seem to be a few who will complain at whatever Roy does. Probably the same people who wanted McAuley to be dropped!

great news gives 100% every game, this will make him more mature & his sometimes discipline which lets him down will only make him a much better player for ipswich.
