Keane Angry at Reporters
Keane Angry at Reporters
Saturday, 3rd Oct 2009 22:35

Town boss Roy Keane slammed reporters for failing to ask him about the controversial penalty awarded to Barnsley after the Tykes had beaten his side 2-1 at Oakwell. Iain Hume missed the spotkick, given for an apparent foul on the Canadian by Tommy Smith.

As Keane left the room at the end of his post-match press conference he rounded on reporters: "You've watch the game and nobody's asked me about the bloody penalty. That about sums you up. Was it a penalty? Does anyone in this room think it was a penalty?”

Keane himself had no doubts: "I couldn't understand what the penalty was given for. None of their players appealed for it and I didn't agree with the freekick against Tommy Smith that led to their second goal.

"He's won the header and then they have taken the kick 10 yards further forward. That said, we should have dealt with it.

“A minute before that, we had one kicked off the line and you go from almost winning it to losing in with the last kick of the game.”

Keane felt his side got something from the game: "It's another disappointing result but we deserved more than we got.

"It wasn't a pretty game but we had just about the better of the chances, barring the penalty. To concede in injury time again after five and a bit minutes is hard to take.

"But we knew coming here today would be difficult with the conditions and Barnsley being on a good run of results."

The Blues boss thought his team came back into it after a slow beginning to the game: "We had a poor start with the goal but we responded well and had some good opportunities.

"That's the way it's going for us at the moment. Instead of winning the game in the last couple of minutes, you go from the disappointment of that to having a double whammy by actually conceding."

The Blues boss seems in no mood to relinquish control, despite the continuing bad results: “I'm still as determined as ever, 100%.

“It's the toughest time I have had in my career, though I had tough times as a player, but we have got to deal with it.

“It's tough at the moment because the players deserve better than what they are getting. We're stuck in a rut, so we have to try and get out of it.”

Keane reacted angrily to a TV reporter asking him if he was going to carry on as Town manager, refusing to dignify what he felt was an insulting question with an answer. When asked how that should be interpreted he glared at the reporter and said: “Take that any way you want.”

Tykes boss Mark Robins was pleased to have achieved his side’s second win in a week: "It's back-to-back wins for the first time since I think Boxing Day last year, so from that point of view its excellent.

"It's a decent return, we've had a decent start. We've been in three weeks now and we're seeing things starting to move. The supporters are behind us, that's really important, and the players are behind us.

"They're putting in the performances now. Sometimes you have to grind it out but if you can do that around teams around you that's an indicator or how you'll perform at the end of the season."

Robins thought his side deserved the win: "I think so, having missed a penalty, hit a crossbar, missed a free shot when it goes in if Ryan Shotton makes good contact.

"They've had one or two chances too where the goalkeeper has made a good save, but the weather didn't help the game.

"It's a great time to a score a goal, there's no chance of a reply. The conditions were shocking, atrocious, and they didn't make for a good game of football and I don't think we got one."

HES starting to lose it how long till he blows his head gasket and walks then?

Why is his resigning from Sunderland for boardroom interference always referred to as him "walking"? Since when did doing something once mean that you have to be labelled for ever more?

Having just returned from Barnsley I have to say I agree with most of what Keane has said. Which game Robins was watching i'm not quite sure. We deserved a point at the very least and unfortunately most of the talking points will centre around the ref who should have sent Darren Moore off in the first half, gave a ludicrous penalty and then gave a nonsense free kick which was taken at least ten yards from where the "offence" occurred. That said the defending today was almost suicidal at times and I for one would like to see Richard Wright take command of crosses a lot more.
Also - well done to the fans today for staying behind the team right till the end and also for singing Keane's name as he left the pitch. The position we are in now everyone needs to stay together including the fans.

Kipper, spot on. When the free kick was given I thought it was highly questionable and then it was taken yards infield from where Smith was supposed to have fouled his man. The referee today was frankly atrocious. However, Keano's right, we didn't deal with the cross and they'd obviously twigged how shaky our keeper and defence are and pumped it into the right position. And then Macken, unable to hit a barn door for us, does the honours.

I don`t understand why Keano is making such a fuss over a penalty that was giving BUT not even scored!!!! Seems he is beginning to show the pressure his under not just from the fans but probably from those higher up! ( ie: ME & Clegg). If we don`t get wins out of the next 2 home games I can see the fans start chanting `Keano Out`inside & outside the ground. What makes it worse today is that Naaaaarwich were singing Keano`s name!

Keano sounds like he is starting to feel the pressure but hopefully we can turn that into a positive thing. It is coming, each week we get a little closer but it's hard to an optimistic Blues fan at the minute!!

Has anybody got an example of a team that has turned their situation round after being Bottom of the Championship in October??
0

Gilesy added 23:54 - Oct 3
This time last year, Forest were bottom with 5 points.
In 2007, it was QPR with 3 points and the year before that it was Sheffield Wednesday with 7 points. As far as I can remember, none of them went down.

Watched post-match interview on Football league show...
Reporter: "Are you gonna stay on?"
Keane: "I refuse to answer that question." He looked like he was going to kill him!
Worrying times... we need a strong CB (Shittu) and a goalscorer...Priskin was woeful today.

Anybody seen the article on the Mirror website about Steve Mclaren replacing Keano? Just what is going on? I think Keano needs more time, once we get that first win up up and away.

We have been so unlucky in our last two matches.

Gilesy, Roy Keane had everything going for him at Sunderland. However, whatever the reasons are - he quit. End of story. In hindsight, I am so glad he left. He will quit Ipswich - mark my words and he will come up with some excuse like boardroom interference to justify his decision. Since when is it a crime for a club owner wanting to know where his employees are? When he walks out on Ipswich, he won't of course mention that his Ipswich side are woeful just like his Sunderland team were woeful when he quit up here. This is a quote from the Irish Times after he walked.

"We had sat down with him a couple of times, Niall and I," the former Manchester United skipper said of his relationship with Ellis in an interview in the Irish Times. "I went down to London to meet him twice. I thought, hmm, the dynamics are changing here. He said he had read my book. I felt he was thinking from the start that I wasn't for him. He sort of knew this wasn't going to be a long-term relationship." Things came to a head in a brief conversation on the eve of his December 4 resignation following the 4-1 defeat by Bolton - Keane's last game in charge.

"It started with a demand to know where I had been the previous day, that he wanted me available at all times," Keane said. "It was a disappointment.

Then there were accusations about how often I came in, about moving my family up. And it was the tone." A call to his London-based lawyer, Michael Kennedy, quickly followed which Keane reported as: "Michael, speak with whoever you have to speak to. I'm done with Sunderland."

He continued: "At United, I finished and I knew I was just an employee to them. At Sunderland it was the same. I left and people came out saying 's gone and we're all more relaxed'.

"It was them and me. The United experience helped me. It didn't upset me, what happened at Sunderland. It was a business decision. Even for me I suppose it was a business decision. I couldn't give my heart and soul with this fella on my shoulder. That, I'm sure, is how he works." Keane, who said he would be "happy to manage a Championship club"

Funny that Tractorboy I didn't see the game as I live abroad so listened to the commentry. David Johnson reckons Prisken played better than he had ever seen him play for Town and he is improving with every game. So who's take do I take on Prisken? An ex professional footballer (striker) or yours? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm hard choice

Sorry Makem you sound like one of the few who didn't like Keano at your club even tho he got you in the prem and kept you there next year. Maybe you should follow town, you'd fit in with loads of the idiots who want him out!

Gilesy, your a legend m8, all the arguements i've ever had about Keano , you've just summed up! Only ever managed 1 club, hardly Keegan style walking away, also, worse clubs have started the season the same way and survived and are still there.

At the end of the day, we had bad, bad, BAD luck today! All who want Keane to stay, please, KEEP SHOWING THAT FAITH! Otherwise the boo boys are the ones who will kill this club and turn us into Newcastle Mk 2 (God forbid!!!!)

COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just wish I didn't have work commitments that meant I can hardly make a game, but if I could I'd be there signing the team on, come on Keano, sort it out! We're in a real mess at the moment and I'm starting to wonder what is going on, but I'd love nothing more than for YOU (not another manager) to sort this out and get us moving up the table. In Keane we trust!
COYB!!!!!! F*&%@*&G COME ON!!!!!

If McClaren comes our way, I may just start watching the MLS instead. Keane just needs time, He is not a miracle worker. If we are bottom at Xmas with no wins, time to reevaluate, but not now.

Bluewein, I can in fact state that I thought Keano was great for Sunderland. As you pointed out, Sunderland were not in a very good position when he took over and Keane is responsible for taking us back into the Premier and keeping us there. I and the vast majority of Sunderland fans appreciate what he did for us. How could you not be supportive of that achievement? The point I was making is that I believe Keane is a quitter and he will walk from Ipswich sooner rather than later. Boardroom interference was just an excuse he used to deflect from Sunderland's results that had become dire and Keano couldn't seem to stem the tide. Sound familiar?

I do have a soft spot for Ipswich (Grant Leadbitter is one of our own) and I sincerely hope that they do a hell of a lot better than they currently are doing - with or without Keane. I just think that like Sunderland, they will do better AFTER Keane has walked.

well i got my prediction wrong again lol

I agree with Kipper 100%.

I do think when times are tough things go against you.
Once we get a win under a belt it should us all a lift.

Heres hoping.

Stick with Keano imo.

I don't want Keane to go in fact I feel quite sorry for the bloke. He is obviously a marked man with the press and the media as a whole, who are just waiting for him to fall on his face. I have never seen ITFC have so much coverage on Sky and again attracted the lead headline on previewing the Football League Show tonight. I am however not sure we should wait until Xmas to assess the situation I would say more like the end of October middle of November as we now have a run of games where we must pick up points otherwise Keane will sadly fall on his sword. Up until today I think Keane has showed great dignity with the press so I for one hope he succeeds not just for ITFC but for himself. The next two games are now crucial so come on lets all get behind the Manager and the team. If we can get a centre back and a good back goalkeeper I am sure we will be OK - look at Lonergan today for Preston he was the difference between WBA drawing and winning. Wright has no competition and with defence so shaky he should excel not be at fault himself for so many of the goals we concede.
