Walters a Doubt for Plymouth Trip
Walters a Doubt for Plymouth Trip
Thursday, 22nd Oct 2009 11:09

Striker Jon Walters is rated as a doubt ahead of Saturday’s game at Plymouth after spraining an ankle in the closing stages of Tuesday’s draw with Watford.

Boss Roy Keane told the club site: "Jon is a worry for us and we will see how he is leading up to the weekend.

"He doesn't go off the pitch for nothing and it's a concern. We are going into another battle at Plymouth and we're going to need all our leaders and characters, and Jon is one of them.”

Town will also be without Connor Wickham at Plymouth as the 16-year-old frontman has joined up with the England U17 squad.

Trouble with a lot of these idiots is that they hark on about the Sir Bob and Burley era but they were probably doling out stick even then. They certainly havent got the same concept of ` Ipswichness' that i have. Good to see the crowds now getting behind the team more because lets face it , it does make a difference.

re cracko 82 - hard to understand why you think Trotter is off the pace - with him as our anchorman/ballwinner we dominated midfield on tuesday. He won bags of possession, kept the ball and moved it on swiftly. Because he has a loping stride it does not mean he is slow — watch his gear change when someone tries to take him for pace. When we lose possession he is covering back at pace. Because he is big it doesn't mean he hasn't got tight control. And as for suggestions that he is unfit - can anyone seriously suggest that when we fitness obsessed keane as manager.
He gets low player rating marks on this website as some people clearly have it in for him, but not on more informed sites such as the Green'un. Sad that these days ipswich fans want to rubbish promising young (and local) players. Didn't used to be like that.
Ridiculous suggestion (above) to replace him in midfield with Bruce - Magillton quickly abandoned that one.

Yes it is conkist but it is my first memory of going to PR. Not the football just that there was this bloke with a massive nose.Makes you wonder about the bloke who posts as John Warks Willy though.

Leadbitter for Captain is a great shout. Always on the ball, organising the team. Walters will be seriously missed as he has led by example lately with his workrate. For me though it should be Pablo or Priskin with Walters or Stead but who knows. And without a doubt I'd pick Quinn(er) either in place of Trotter or Martin, as I think we'll need his hard work away from home. Trotter at least offers his physical presence at set pieces etc. whilst Martin may get more luck on the break away from home.

Trotter way too slow, happy to see Quinn in and Leadbitter captain. I'd play Peters ahead of Martin, his pace would be good on the counter.

I am not sure Bruce will be made Skipper if Walters is dropped. I think that he may will stick with the back four of the l;ast two matches leaving Bruce on the bench.

Give Mcauley a go again - seriously, I think he is ready to have it back.

It would give the likes of Stead Priskin a game... but they lack Jons work rate. We need that on sat if nothing else

i would make leadbitter captain if walters doesnt make it. i think he may leave out Martin on saturday replacing him with quinner or peters. this is possibly the biggest game ITFC have had for a couple of years as the result and performance could fire us one way or the other.

This could be good news. Wickham is IMO not really to play week in week out - particularly considering the pressure. I am actually looking forward to seeing Priskin play - because as yet he really hasn't played too much football! He needs a run in the team

Re Walters - good player - passion, work rate is high BUT does he score enough goals in a striker role? Not for me. Edwards is excellent so clearly Walters wouldn't play right midfield. If fit, how about playing behind the two strikers (Pablo and Counago)? At the end of the day we can't keep clean sheets so why not attack?

I can't beleve we haven't signed David Healy from Sunderland yet, he's not getting a game there he can score goals at this level, why isn't he here yet, he know's Leadbitter and Edwards already, surely he is dieing for a chance to prove he has still got it?

Whilst i don't wish to join in with the negative 'Trotter bashing' in anyway because it seems that he has been steady but unimpressive, i have felt for a couple of weeks that he is merely keeping Norris' seat warm for him.

Norris and Leadbitter in CM - Keane and Scholes type partnership maybe....................

Leadbitter for club captain i agree with totally.

Why are people saying McAuley should be captain... the reason he was stripped was he is not commanding enough... he is one the quietest players in the team... not his fault just who he is and of course the other reason was his form but he should stick with controlling his back and agree with a lot of the comments saying Leadbitter is the man for captain!

I have been reading these forums for a long time without adding anything, but thought I would now. It is interesting peoples views on Walters being replaced by a natural goalscorer. Yes we need someone who can put the ball in the net, but what Walters brings to the team is hard to replace. His running and movement creates the space for others and his link up play is second to none in the club, IMO, (Heskey does not score but is in the England Team!)
I actually think he will be a loss but Wickham not being available may be a blessing in disguise. Yes he could be one of the best players to come out of Ipswich, But as it showed on Tuesday night his first touch and hold up play are not there yet. When Pabs went off and he came on we came under more pressure as the ball was not being held up. Were our main chances after is introduction mainly breaks?
Thoughts?

Agree Leadbitter for captain. Would like Garvan to be given a chance. Not sure about Walters replacement, Stead have delivered the goods in the past...on occasion...but if Priskin is the big hope for the future perhaps he should be given a chance. Pablo probably will be subsituted at some stage anyways. Looking forward to a 3-1 win!

We could always ask Gary Johnson at Bristol City if we could take Danny Haynes on loan but, what with him opening the scoring for them on Tuesday night, we might not get a positive answer (and we must always have a positive answer to absolutely everything now mustn't we?).
