McAuley: It Was the Worst Feeling Ever

Goalscorer Gareth McAuley says the feeling of conceding another injury time goal against Watford was “gut-wrenching”. McAuley has also backed manager Roy Keane to turn things around.

McAuley said: “It you take the worst thing that's ever happened to you and multiply it you are getting close to how awful we felt.

“I really have no words to describe it. It was gut-wrenching. And the pain was greater because Watford never looked like scoring.

“But late goals keep happening and we must learn to concentrate right to the final whistle.”

The Northern Irishman admits he was disappointed to be stripped of the captaincy earlier in the season, but backs manager Roy Keane to be a success with the Blues: “Our manager has definitely got it in him to get Ipswich where they want to be.

“Are the players on his side? Without a doubt.”

Not a big MacAuley fan but pleased for him to be showing this attacking threat from set pieces finally. 2 goals in a handful of games is a good effort even if he is weak in other areas. Had a good game against Watford

webside added 16:54 - Oct 22 Wasn't his greatest admiring at the start of the season, but since he's been stripped of the armband his performances have improved. So much so I think he could have been a candidate for Man of the Match on Tuesday night, and that takes a lot for me to say that.

Personally Ithink Mcauley is a great example of someone with the determination required to turn this run around. May be not our greatest player but has suffered the pain of being stripped of the Captaincy, his agent told he could leave, and dropped from the tea.

Now he is a regular in our ever changing back four, scored two goals and demonstrates the sort of fight that will see our fortune change. I can see why he was made Captain under Jim, proper sportsman if you ask me - regardless of ability.

roytheboy added 17:53 - Oct 22 Gareth has shown a huge determination over the last two games at least, to play his part well, it has been very noticeable to me that he has been solid and done his job very well indeed, I believe that relinquishing the Captain's armband was a good move which has enabled him to concentrate on his job at centre back, he's a good lad.

BaronBaron added 17:57 - Oct 22 p.s. Begovic could have done a lot better with the goal on Saturday yet the defence do look markedly more settled in front of him. A goalkeeper is not all about shot-stopping and maybe Wright is weak in these less obvious areas.

Ipswich means a lot to me, but I find it a bit insulting that he thinks that he cares more about conceding in the last minute than I do about the worst thing that has ever happened in my life. I know footballers like to exaggerate, but a bit of perspective needed I think.
