Bristol City Confirm Morsy Signing
Friday, 2nd Jan 2026 12:54

Bristol City have confirmed the signing of former Blues skipper Sam Morsy on a six-month deal to the end of the season.

News that the Robins were close to landing the 34-year-old first emerged last week with the Egypt international having been training with them for a number of weeks and spotted at their 5-0 victory over Portsmouth yesterday.

Morsy left Kuwait SC after a short spell in September having departed the Blues in the summer.

“I am delighted to be here. As soon as I heard of the interest, I could see it was a really good fit for me,” Morsy told the Ashton Gate club’s official website.

“[Manager] Gerhard [Struber] has an infectious personality and is a real winner and I know the style of football he wants to play.

“I am going to give it everything I have got, and I am fully committed to this cause. I am joining an amazing football club and an amazing group.”

Robins technical director Brian Tinnion added: “We know what an experienced player Sam is and to have his quality on the pitch and his leadership in the dressing room is really exciting for us. We are so pleased to have him here until the end of the season.”

Morsy, who led the Blues to back-to-back promotions, will make a return to Portman Road later this month when the Robins are in Suffolk on Tuesday 20th January.

A good no risk signing for Bristol City and a nice new challenge for him.

I wish him well.

He is there as cover and to fill a hgap im their squad. May not even get a start. Think Matisiwu would have him in his pocket regardless. COYB

Even more baffling that we let our captain leave on a free? One of the maddest decisions by this club.

Most overrated town player from McKenna era. Good honest professional who played important role in our success but he is not the legend status sooooo many on here give him. Chaplin was far more important but most Town fans sang about Ladapo which shows the general level of knowledge of our fan base and especially on here where most now rave about Oshea who is as ordinary as Morsy

A winner and leader, in the EFL he makes any side better on and off the pitch, he lifts expectations and standards, we stood on the shoulders when we had Sam and Mass, we don’t miss the quality they had with the money we’ve spent, we do miss their desire, and passion to be ‘more’ - good luck Sam…, surely he can’t do it again (he can). Automatic for us and Sam up
In the play offs, you wouldn’t bet against it.

Boysof81 - so the club forced him out while he was begging to stay? Doubt it.

Until I hear from one of the parties involved the left by mutual consent is surely the right conclusion? He had an opportunity for a new challenge for a lot of money at 34 years old and slowing. The club allowed him to go, not least because they couldn’t guarantee him first team football and possibly to allow him to earn a lot of £ at the end of his career..

The right decision at the time was made. Personally, I’d have loved him to have stayed, maybe as a player coach or something. But it wasn’t to be and time waits for nobody.

Move on. He has, why can’t so many fans ?

Ultimately he’d have been better off taking the 12month deal we offered. I know that’s with the benefit of hindsight but he couldn’t have come back here now as it would undermine O’Shea and upset the squad dynamics. Useful as a rotation for Matusiwa but I think we’ve very much moved on with Azor now.

McKenna's best ever signing played a massive role in our promotions but now in the twilight of his career hope he does well at Bristol city.

Morsy will always rightly be acknowledged and respected as one of the key elements of those tremendous two seasons.

However, signing him again at this stage would be wrong on at least a couple of levels:

1. He is nowhere near match fit having not played for a good few months.
2. It would potentially upset the new leadership group which is establishing itself.
3. Going back as a player or manager is difficult and is rarely a success.

Thanks, Sammy for all that you did, but it’s right for both parties to continue to move on.

He was nailed on the team sheet to play every week but sought an opportunity which didn’t come to fruition for some reason, I’m pleased he had words to his successor in convincing him to join us.
Will always be fondly thought off by town fans.
He’s an Egyptian,
Portman Road WAS his kingdom,
we THOUGHT he was fecking brilliant,
Sam Morsy.

As the man said himself on his departure, things just happen in football that are no ones fault, as they do in life I might add! He gave us a few years great service, lets just move on and wish him the very best of luck. Who knows, we might be seeing each other in the PL next season!

Excellent player. Will live long in the memory of Town fans …

BUT - just like the Chaplin story, we need to move on and have. Sadly, his legs have gone and hasn’t played any competitive football (I’m not counting Saudi) since May. He’s not match sharp. We have looked and have recruited better. At 34 he’s past his best.

He ain’t no Wark (who returned 3 times?) and while I acknowledge his contribution, leadership and commitment to the cause, like Chappers, the sun has set on their time with us. Time to move on

Jas0999 - Did he ever have legs? He’s never been the most mobile, if he was, we’d be talking world class, because he’s superb at what he does well, leading, taking the ball on either foot with three defenders on him; making space, good range of passing and tenacious. A winner.

He didn’t need pace, he reads the game extremely well, these aren’t skills you lose, they’ll be better than ever, think Shaun Derry when he went to QPR at the same age.., glad we aren’t bringing him back, but also wish him all the best. If he’s got legs around him it could work very well.

Always thought Jens lack of defensive traits, and Phillips also being half a yard off the pace, did Sam no favours at all, not really his fault.

But at this level, if he has legs around him, he will help them a huge amount. One of the few players I’ve seen who also seems to thrive on two games a week, almost felt he needed and wanted that.

I hope he gets a great reception when we play.., I genuinely think the back to back wouldn’t even be close without his contribution, his skill set isn’t easily replaced with money. Deserves lots of respect .., how many games did he drag us through 23/24 when we were no better than the opposition, but he simply wouldn’t except less than a win? .., his attitude to the game is exceptional.

The Kingpin in our 2 promotion campaigns for me. He knitted everything together and got us going when we were a goal behind or up against it in games. Could he have reproduced that form this season had he stayed ? We will never know but I wouldn’t have bet against it. I wish him well. A great servant to our Club.
