McEveley Linked With Town Return Friday, 8th Jan 2010 08:40
Town are being linked with a move for former loanee Jay McEveley. The 24-year-old Derby County left-back is out of contract in the summer and is said to be available at a bargain price, although the Rams were recently reported to be ready to offer him a new deal.
McEveley, who has been capped three times by Scotland, was with the Blues while a Blackburn player during the 2005/06 season, making 17 starts and two sub appearances, scoring once.
The Liverpool-born defender, who had previously spent time on loan at Gillingham and Burnley while with Blackburn, joined Derby for £600,000 in January 2007, subsequently joining Preston and Charlton on loan.
This season the 6ft 1in tall left-back or centre-half has been a regular in Nigel Clough’s side.
A new left-back very much appears to be on Roy Keane’s January wish-list with Lee Wallace of Hearts linked towards the end of last year and Carlisle’s Ian Harte targeted just before the emergency loan deadline.

Surco, yes i did state that mroe than likely Magilton started the process, but what im saying is you dont know that Keane didn't see Delaney as a CB to start with do we? think about it, Thatcher was out injured, and for what ever reason D. Wright was not starting, the best alternative was to put a left footed defender at left ack even you must agree with that or would you think bruce should have gone there? either way, Keane has bought the best out fo delany so for me you can't call him a failure.

Actually i've never said get rid of Garvin or D Wright or stead always the opposite i said along with quite a few on here, that Garvin needed to be in the team but! he wasn't playing well enough to get in it, and not showing enough hard work, which he now is. I've always been a fan of his and always will be as long as he keeps working hard and doenst play though the motions. Anyway getting back to this post, Don't think this would be a good signing and not sure where the lnik has come from but, what about the possible interest in Wayne Bridge? with the new Man City manager could his first team appearences be limited?

McEveley didn't look very good when he was here before. Do we need a left back? I think not, as David Wright is good enough in this role. Mills & Taricco were both right footed, but played much of their careers at left back. If Wright were to get injured, Peters has shown himself to be OK, & always the left footed options of Smith, Balkestein or Delaney. Frankly the only weak area is up front, but can't see a 20 goal a season man being available this January. Give Priskin another chance, & hopefully Stead will continue his good form when back from suspension

Martin is a flop - Very lightweight - Fergie did a good bit of business and kept his academy ticking over - I know some guys on coaching staff at Watford and they couldnt believe when we bought Priskin - Healy - poor BUT lets focus on the positives and that is we are - since Oct 01 a tough team to beat and have started creating loads of chances - one position - STRIKER and we could start converting them - all looking good

Disagree with the negative comments, when he was with us he was very young and still learning the game, infact he still is young and still learning the game but is looking very good when he performs well. Well worth a punt and will get better over the next few seasons, go for it Keano!

injuredanimal: I said the jury was out on Delaney. And still is. Anyway, it's still not a great return.

Superflude i never once mentioned your optimism ? And if you think Roy signed Delaney as a centre back why did he not try him there until he had no other option but to due to injuries ? Surely a big summer signing as a centre back would start as a centre back and try others at left back like pim, smith ,peters ?Oh he did do that and still didnt put Delaney at centre back
AJblue added 14:31 - Jan 8
seems to me naa, the jury is split on Delaney 11-1 you being the 1! I still think that you are missing the point, surely it is best to sign these players and hope they are a success, than to not sign anyone. All of the others Keane has signed have not maybe set the world on fire, but only Martin and Priskin have failed to deliver at all. Even Healy,(very small fee), has contributed a bit, and if he had been a success every one would be raving about what an astute piece of business he was. Just because these players have so far not "clicked", i still fell given a chance that they have something to offer the team. It is obvious that McEveley isnt anybodies 1st choice, but i cannot seem to get it into my head, why, just because we are linked with every Tom Dick and Harry, it gives rise for all of the negative posters to crawl out of the woodwork again. Nothing to complain about with results just lately, so we will have a go at something else....i swear some of you are only happy when you are unhappy!

injured: I'm not wanting to dwell on this as it's gone off topic (my fault I'm sure) but to pick up your point. There's a phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". That is my thinking here. The only part of the team in obvious need of improvement is the strikeforce. By making other signings, especially two or three, he runs a real risk of making the team worse, not better. Obviously, every position on the pitch can be improved, and ultimately we should be striving for that but, in our current position and following our dismal start I think we should be looking to keep things stable and tweak here and there. People talked of the need to rebuild the team, whereas if anything, the opposite has been shown to be the case with our recent improved form co-inciding with only 2 or 3 new signings playing regularly. Then of course my opinion of Keane's transfer record comes into the equation too. And true, I do feel bad posting negative stuff on here again given our recent form. I've been happy with on-pitch performances recently, but this story, as rubbish as it may prove to be, just brought out the fact that I'm worried about Keane's transfer record and I'm only happy with him signing players (at this stage of the season) that we really, really need.

Naa, i totally agree with you there, but on your third paragraph you say I think we should be looking to keep things stable but tweak here and there - to me tweating wouldnt just be the one player it would be a couple, and Keane has admitted that he is only looking for a couple, whether this be left back, left midfield, or striker, if a couple comes in thats tweaking, so surely your theory on messing with the team doesn't back up that sentence? Just curious
naa added 15:17 - Jan 8
super: hmmm, I guess I shouldn't have said tweaking! I think we need to sign one player - a striker. I think we have enough options in all other positions to enable tactical tweaking and to cover for injuries. Yes, the squad could be stronger - obivously - but I don't think we should risk making changes just at the time when we're finally beginning to show some form. A couple of loan signings brought in purely as cover and nothing more would be OK too, if we had to. But I don't want to see new left midfielders tested and especially not left-backs, considering how stable the defence is right now. The summer is the time to reassess based on what we learned this year and sign in the positions Keane feels are weakest.
superblueflude added 15:20 - Jan 8
Thats true, part of me thinks leave the whole team alone, even the strike force, being honest who out there can be the scorer we want? who wants to move, who we could get thats what i believe is the problem, looking at steads rate of goals he actually wouldnt be that far of the 20 goals that we crave for, so maybe we should just play Priskin and Stead together and see how they can be together - save our money for the summer - what you think?
naa added 15:31 - Jan 8
sounds reasonable. I certainly don't think John is the answer but, as you say, getting a striker is incredibly hard. Beckford is about the only one on the market with a proven record (at lower league) but I can't see him coming here. Otherwise you'd have to get an ageing premier player or gamble on a younger player (as we did with David Johnson years ago). And I have no suggestions on that front (but then I'm not a scout or manager).
superblueflude added 15:39 - Jan 8
John is a bad version of Heskey, i guess certain things he does is great but at times you need more from a forward. I think if Keane really is looking at strikers I think, he may well be in with a chance to bring in someone like Healy, who in all honesty i really wouldnt mind in at this level but make it a loan and not a 4 year contract!. And also looking at younger levels someone like Vela on loan, Freddy Sears maybe, If im right Jay Simpson may be going back to arsenal soon so maybe we could get him in,

Can kind of see Injureds thinking on this one, yeah he's not the best but we have Thatcher, who seemingly will never play again and Delaney who was awful at LB but has turned out to be a solid CB. So we need players to fill that posistion Wright dong ok but I never like the idea of players on the opposite side of their natural posistion, especially in a defensive role. Harte is a better player, but maybe due to history wouldn't have been a popular signing if we had managed to get him. If we can pick him up on the cheap it may just be worth a punt.
cbower added 18:24 - Jan 8
To tweak or not to tweak - that is the question! Don't need a new left back, a left-sided midfielder - only if they can get behind defences and cross from the by-line (still think Civelli might be capable of that and he can play left-back also). Check Lee Martin's record - he's been out on loan to loads of clubs but nobody wanted to take him permenantly and he hardly ever played a first team game for Man U during a period when Fergie would play youngsters in the League Cup, early FACup games and group games in the Champions League which were sometimes meaningless. A few goals in the reserves and we were ripped off! However, he has a long contract and will almost certainly be given another chance at some stage. Don't really care that Delaney was bought as a left back, he's playing fine a centre back right now - end of. I may be talking out of turn here but despite a 6 goals in the last 10 or so games, Stead has got crap ball control, doesn't jump and needs someone with a bit of pace and guile alongside him (and John is not that man). Give Priskin a proper go (even Pablo for guile) or do what almost everyone wants - sign a striker - Phillips on short-term as he can certainly take a chance when one comes along and we do create enough or take a chance on someone from league one - Simeon Jackson for me. Back to the point - no need for McEverley - paper talk anyway.

I know Roy likes backs who can get forward, but surely the first criterion for a defender is that he can defend? For me this is the weakest part of McE's not-very-impressive arsenal. He's ok as left mid, but I can't see he offers much, if any, more than we already possess. Hope it really is only paper talk. While I'm a great fan of D. Wright (true professional), I can understand RK wanting to have options on the left, injuries being one very obvious reason. So I would welcome a new LB - but hopefully not McE!
