Murphy Hopes Town and Sunderland Can Agree Fee
Murphy Hopes Town and Sunderland Can Agree Fee
Monday, 22nd Mar 2010 07:17

On-loan striker Daryl Murphy says he wants to stay with the Blues and hopes Town and Sunderland can agree a fee for his services in the summer. The 27-year-old netted his sixth goal of his loan spell to give the Blues a 1-0 victory over Barnsley on Saturday.

Murphy, who has two years left on his Black Cats contract, confirmed that he’d love to still be with the Blues next season: “I want to stay here. Hopefully Ipswich will want me and a fee can be agreed. I want to play regular first team football and I want to play for Roy Keane.”

Last summer, Town and Sunderland agreed an undisclosed fee for Murphy but the deal broke down after Hull City made a late move. The Tigers confirmed that they had agreed a fee of £1.5 million rising to £2.5 million with the Black Cats for the striker and it's likely that the same figure was involved in the Town deal.

Wages are likely to be a further issue with Murphy probably on something approaching double Town's top wage, which is understood to be around the £12,000-a-week mark.

The Republic of Ireland international said had no problem with Town manager Roy Keane hitting out at his players after the defeat at Watford last week: "The gaffer was right to have a go at us. We didn't perform at Watford and too many of us didn't turn up. But we responded today by picking up three points.

“I appreciate his straight-talking. The players pulled together and showed what we can do when we’re on song.”

Murphy was delighted with Saturday’s goal, but says it was far from the trickiest of his career: "It was the easiest goal I have ever scored. It was so easy that I thought I might be offside, so I looked at the linesman just to make sure."

That goal took the former Waterford United man to six goals for Town, making him the Blues’ joint-top scorer for the season with Jon Walters and Jon Stead. Murphy joked: "If I get to seven goals do I get the Golden Boot?"

Meanwhile, former Blue John Deehan has joined ex-Town team-mate Neil Woods as his head of recruitment at Grimsby Town. Woods took over as manager at Blundell Park in November.

With the greatest respect, we haven't been 'on-song' for quite some time now.

I wish we could have had him instead of Priskin !!!!.
Warnock has not sorted Priskin out yet, he is still getting low marks and being subbed.

He would be a superb signing. I reckon the best way would be to agree a £2m fee (rising to £4m based on appearances, goals and promotion), and pay him £14,000-a-week, making him the top earner, with the potential to rise to £25,000-a-week if he plays for us in the Premier League.

To make way for this, we should sell Tamas Priskin, who is believed to be on a high salary, as well as Lee Martin, Colin Healy, Alex Bruce, Liam Trotter and Jon Stead who surely will also be on high salaries. Furthermore, between them, they should be able to raise pretty much most of the transfer fee.

I still find it strange how so many people criticise Keanes man management skills, yes he can be direct, but if he was such a nightmare to play for then there is no way his Sunderland players, having experienced his management style before, would have followed him here and make comments like Murphys!!!

It may well be that we arent used to his straight talking assessments, but I for one find his honesty refreshing, if the team doesnt perform I'd much rather hear a manager admit the obvious rather than try to find excuses for the unexcusable!!!

With regards to signing Murphy, as long as a decent price can be arranged I think he has shown already that at this level he can do a decent job, if we can get him a decent/consistent strike partner then we might have a decent chance next season! Healy may well be that man but for me, he will need to prove himself before the end of the season. Unfortunately I dont think we would be able to get Colback, I think Bruce rates him and the more we play him the more his price goes up, but I wouldnt mind if he joins for another season long loan!!!

"and I want to play for Roy Keane.”....... It just goes to prove that the press cause many more problems for this club than Roy Keane ever will.

Oh and another thing.... Where are all the know it all idiots who threw their toys out of their pram when we were previously linked with him claiming that he was "a waste of space", "just another Sunderland reject", "a total waste of money", it just once again proves that the majority who think that they know best should keep their mouths shut and give players a chance..... It's such a pity that this great club who used to have so many fantastic loyal supporters now has such a high percentage of moaning idiots.

Why the rush ? Treat him mean, keep him keen until the end of the season. Let us make absolute sure that he's consistent over the final games and not someone who's has a goal burst followed by a goal drought. I'm sure Marcus will want the books balancing and probably 2 strikers will have to move on to reconcile a decent package for Murphy.
And doesn't the highest Ipswich goalscorer win the Golden Wellie ?

ThatMurhenCross - why would we agree a fee of £2m rising to £4m for a player who Sunderland were happy to sell for £1.5m rising to £2.5m when he had a year more on his contract?

That said, sign him up when the time is right - he certainly doing the job for us now and hopefully will continue to do so.

He would only be on £12,000 a week? What a terrible shame for him.

Come on Daryl, put the pen to paper.

Murphy is doing a good job ,hope we do sign him, as for Priskin , brittaniaman is right, he did sod all here, and nothing since being farmed out, Warnock is not liked by a lot of people but he does get best out of players if Priskin dosn't do it now it will underline what a bad signing he is.

Murphy has done very well, but I do not think we should pay £24K a week in the Championship. Hopefully a more reasonable wage can be agreed which doesn't push up our losses and unsettle the other players in the squad. Is Murphy worth twice as much as Leadbitter for example?

We are very lucky if Evans funds the signing of Murphy, as we will get very little back if we sell Priskin or Martin. Even getting someone to take on their wages would be difficult, and Martin has another 3 years on his contract!

Best news I have heard today. Please buy this bloke from us and we will throw Healy in free of charge !!! We are keeping Colback though. Seriously though, I am glad he is working out for you Tractor Boys and the more goals he scores, the more likely we are likely to get a good fee for him. And if that keeps Ipswich up, then all the better. Good luck lads.

Colback would be the signing of the season if we could get him, but looks very doubtful, he could be in a premier league team next year easily, he is good enough even now. Murphy wanting to play for Keane is a big influence, but if another premier league comes in, im sure he will go for that, not getting my hopes up just yet.

I think Colbacks developement and improvement is down to the fact that he has been a regular in the team.
With Steve Bruce going on record as saying there will be money to spend on transfers in the summer, i do wonder if Colback will find himself down the pecking order again at Sunderland.
Maybe he will still be here with us next season, it would be interesting to know if he wants to return.
Quality player but i feel he's not quite ready for the premiership yet!

depressed - I agree with you. Colback is quality, but not sure Bruce would see him as a first team member that would be pushing for a top 6 prem place, whereas 100% the type and quality of player that will push us into the prem. Tough call for young Colback, stay here in Champ with us to further his quality and shop window appeal, or go back up north and risk sitting on the bench for much of the season because I can see Bruce coughing up 5-6mil for a center mid player in the summer.

My advice is stay here. See the bigger picture. 3 years from now Man U will buy you for 8 mil and 60k a week. Go back to Black cats and you will get very little exposure.

Sunderland dont need/want him so may charge a small fee and may pay off some of his 2 year contract at whatever ? 25k a week . If he goes back he will be behind bent jones and campbell so no chance and will rot in the reserves. Sunderland should pay him off partly and move him on. Its the best decision for all parties.

He must be lying about wanting to play for Roy Keane. After all, the fountain of knowledge that is 'petersongoal' said that everyone hates him, and he knows so much more than the rest of us, apparently.

Seriously though, we need to sign him, and if we can get Colback for another seaon then we will be a force to be reckoned with next year
