Sunderland Want £1m for Murphy
Sunderland Want £1m for Murphy
Tuesday, 27th Apr 2010 22:22

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is understood to want Town to pay a fee of £1 million for loan striker Daryl Murphy. The clubs are negotiating a deal for the Irishman but are yet to come to an agreement.

Bruce, who spoke with Blues manager Roy Keane last week, has previously said that Murphy isn’t in his plans at the Stadium of Light, while Town are keen to make his loan a permanent move. The 27-year-old is happy with the Blues and would like to stay at Portman Road.

Murphy is contracted to Sunderland for another two years and is on more than £20,000-a-week, around double the Blues’ highest wage. It is likely that much of the fee that Town would pay the Black Cats will be used by the Wearsiders to settle the remaining years of the Waterford-born man’s contract.

If he is seen as the foward to lead us on next season then its gonna be the same as this.
His strike rate is poor .

bloody hell stead as well..this is too much i assume we got the tea lady and the ballboys from sunderland as well it explains why we are no good at the moment though.what have sunderland ever won they are just a 2nd division team from a 2nd division town untill we break this link with these loser clubs we are never going to restore our club to its rightful place...who should i blame for this dumb policy of buying sunderland everthing....did we get the new black shirts off sunderland as well ?

Get rid off, lisbie, stead, counago, martin, priskin, colin healy, bruce, and bring in some quality, murphy adds quality to the side, hopefully bring in a few others maybe hooper or someone like that, hooper has some quality if he scored that many goals in a bad side get someone who is hungry to play for the club and hungry to get to the next level, buying tried and trusted championship players..

I wouldnt give you £1 for Murphy. He rreally ISNT worth £1m PLUS all his add ons in wages. He's a lazy sod who makes minimal effort once the ball is morte than 3ft from his right foo t.

We'd be better to push the boat out for the likes of Hooper and Chopra

would'nt rush into that , he got us a few goals, but lets face it ANY goals were a blessing this past season , i agree with finidigorge re players to off load ,but getting rid is another story .

Would be a good squad player; should we pay £1 mill fora squad player? Not in my opinion. A bit more for Hooper would be a better bet if you ask me.

I think Jon Stead is rightly the yardstick by which Murphy should be measured and I've been having these same thoughts in recent weeks. Yes, it's not a perfect comparison as they are two different players, however their records this season and the role they fill are certainly close enough. On these terms there is very little between them. Yes, I think Murphy is the better player and he has the edge over Stead if a few areas. Yes, it's clear that Roy rates Murphy much higher and will play him, where as he appears very unlikely to do a U turn on Stead.

However, the crucial point here is that Murphy is likely to cost us this sort of money in terms of a fee and is then likely to be on a par with our top earners. With these facts in mind, he does not seem to represent any kind of value for money. If Keane can get Bruce down on the fee, then maybe it'll be a reasonable buy. If he does sign, I'll get behind him regardless, but for me our money would probably be better spent elsewhere.

Agree with previous comment about how we have to offload players but other clubs get away with charging for them. Murphy is a decent player, and £1M isn't a bad price, but I suspect he'll be on high wages and I just think we can do better.

I doubt very much that he'd be better than a hungry younger player from a lower division. But then I guess they could be seen as more of a risk....

I'll be honest, i don't really want him. If we sign him he's not going to be just a squad player, he'll be a regular.
I know Wickham's only 17, but the last few weeks have shown that he can play week in, week out and i think he should next season as he has the quality to help get us where we want to be. Sure rest him every so often so we don't burn him out, but i think he should play more than not.
If we sign Murphy one of 2 things will happen.
1. Wickham won't play as much as he should, or
2. We won't sign a more natural goal scorer (like Chopra, Hooper, Lambert that people have already mentioned)

The body language of Murphy over the past couple of games has been awful and really looks as though he does not want to be here. I personally think £1m is far too much money for a cast off and would much rather go for a hungry player in the mould of Hooper whose wages will not be too excessive either. Really disappointed that we are going for him but at the end of the day I suppose his 6 goals have helped keep us up.

I know everyone is calling for Chopra but if Murphy warrants £1M, what will Cardiff want?

would be happy if murphy stayed, 1m isn't that much money but do agree when you encluced his wages it dosen't seen such a good deal, i still think wickham will play a big part if we could get another young striker a well we will be ok.
also see r wright and d wright have been released!

Undecided on this one .... he started well but seems to have gone off the boil a bit. He is still relatively young though, and could give a few years of service. If Steady is going, I would also ship out Priskin. Get in Murphy, Hooper, and hopefully Chopra! That wouldn't leave much room for Pabs though, would it?

Get rid of all the dross, have Wickham and Hooper up front, with Ambrose ( bet he goes to QPR tho) supplying the ammo, and hey presto!

Just get in there quick, instead of leaving it to a week before the new season.

Tough one, coz I would say if we we're pairing Murphy up with two more new striker signings (say Chopra, Hooper) then I think as an option Murphy would be a good signing, If we're saying Murphy is being signed as a main (20 goal) striker we need to look again.....

I have an issue with Bennyblue. What are you smoking when you say that Sunderland are a second division team from a second division town??? Let's start with the club shall we? Ipswich have won the league once to Sunderland's six. We have won the FA Cup twice to your once. Yes, put the UEFA cup in there why don't you. Our history is bigger and grander. Our stadium makes Portman Road look like a garden shed. Our support is vastly superior to yours - end of story. As for the cities themselves, please lay off the dope Benny. Ipswich are my second team but most Sunderland fans just Anglia is full of think you are country bumpkins down there with no passion at all. I am not on here to slag anyone off but since YOU mentioned it - don't have a go at my team or my city which is infinitely more superior than anything you have !!! FACT. Oh and good luck doing nothing next year either except more mediocracy.

Mackemyank

You forgot to mention that your supporters, although vocal, are mainly juvenile delinquents, who cause no end of trouble wherever they go, and like all northern crap, seem to get away with it.

MACKEMYANK added 13:07 - Apr 28
Well Bennyblue talks crap and that hit a nerve with me. I am not on here to cause anybody offence but I wouldn't swap Sunderland (club or city) for Ipswich for all the tea in China !!! And I stand by my words........ I am sure you all think the same way too in reverse but Benny's points needed to be addressed. Ipswich are a small family club and always will be. Sunderland are one of the bigger clubs in the country and if Benny doesn't see that he is in denial.

BENNYBLUE IS not a very popular "supporter" of ITFC anyway. He is universally disliked because he tends to be over the top and talks out of his rear end. He knocks everything about Keane and often the team aswell.

Just ignore him Makemyank.

Mackem, ignore that bloke and do assume all us real fans are like him, i can see what your saying about loving your club etc, and i do take in some points of what youve said BUT calling ipswich town a SMALL club is no where close, at the moment "sleeping giants " sounds about right as we are severly under achieving, and our up there with the best in the country so think again about that, sticking with your club without a win in 15 games and still backing them is something which most clubs would just boo and like dear old millwall and hull, throw chairs...
