Tottenham Make Wickham Bid
Tottenham Make Wickham Bid
Monday, 3rd May 2010 15:27

Tottenham have made Town a £5 million offer for 17-year-old striker Connor Wickham. The Londoners want to sign the frontman during the summer with a view to loaning him back to the Blues for the 2010/11 season.

On Friday, manager Roy Keane refused to disclose whether the Blues had received an offer for the England U17 international, who signed a two-year professional contract last month.

A week previously Keane said he would be lynched by supporters if he were to allow the biggest talent to emerge from the academy in years to leave so soon.

The offer may be considered by owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg, however, they may feel that Wickham could be worth even more in a year’s time after a full season in the Championship, with plenty of other Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, all understood to have been eyeing the 6ft 3in tall striker.

Wickham is happy at the club and has said he is in no hurry to leave having ended the season by netting three goals in his last five games.

People are talking about the length of Connor's contract only being 2 years but have they forgotten that is the maximum length contract a 17 year old can be given?

lets be honest here, HE IS NOT CURRENTLY WORTH 5 MILLION. aslong as he gets loaned back and we get a considerable sell on fee i see no reason not to sell....

The report is a load of Boll+++ks.
Why would spurs not have gone for him a month ago and save 5 mil?
still got plenty of attention on this site, how many will rush out and buy the mail 2 morrow?
Having said that I think this club will sell anyone if they think the price is right, make us an ambitious club?????

if we can afford to reject 5M (which i think we can, seeing how much money keane speant on players last summer and we still seem to be fine) we should keep him...he seems to just about be coming good, at a good time..end of the season showing a lot of promise for next year....To be honest i don't think hes worth 5 Million atm, no where near...but i for 5 Million i dont tihnk its worth selling him...if that makes sense!

Please, please dont sell Connor Mr Evans. He has been one of very few highlights of the last season. I realise he will go eventually, but please hang onto him as long as possible.I feel Rhodes went far too early - he would at least have made games a bit more interesting. We are not that desperate for the money and Mr Evans had a pretty good year with his other businesses. Maybe he will think that hanging on to Connor is worth a gamble and I am sure would be more entertaining for us.

Hands off Harry, we would be stupid to sell him, this time next year he will be worth £20 million. Not sure I would trust Keane with £5 let alone £5 million

Unfortunately in the modern game every player has his price when a bigger club comes calling. £5m is a reasonable starting offer, but we'd be mad to accept the first bid for anyone. If they keep coming back with increased bids, there may come a time when ME decides he wants the money. We just have to hope he reinvests it all in the squad.

Not sure what truth there is to this story. As far as i can see it's only a Daily Mail report, nothing official on either Town or Spurs website, or BBC and Sky sports.
Fingers crossed it's just the usual tabloid rubbish.
Bale and Walcott both went for fees around £10 million, Wickham could well end up being as good as them, so £5 million wouldn't be enough for me.

Firstly, this is a Daily Mail story, and is therefore by definition suspect. But assuming it's true, we would be insane to even consider it. If Wickham continues at his current rate of progress, he'll be worth double that next summer and still be under contract. Then we could talk seriously to clubs like Tottenham (or bigger), but at this stage it makes no sense whatsoever.

One final thought for those who think it may be in the best interests of the club: look at Southampton. The premature sales of Walcott and Bale did nothing for their club in the long run, absolutely nothing.

Connor whatever happens, if you go, everyone would understand why. You have an amazing future ahead of you and there is not one person who should deny you the chance to be as good as you can be! If you have the chance to be one of the greatest nothing should stand in your way.

"this time next year he'l be worth £20 million". Please "TheCurly", name me a 17 year old Championship striker who has been sold for anywhere near that. 24 appearances and 4 goals (albeit many as sub). I definately would trust RK with my fiver, he knows enough about horses. And who's to say the money from Connor's eventual transfer would be immediately set aside for new players? Maybe the board have already decided on the transfer kitty, and the exact amount of his transfer will not ba made available.
I for one hope that we don't accept this bid. We will get higher offers. And we must ensure he has another season here, even if it is on loan. And then have add ons, first options on loanees and all other manner of deals added on. Then I'll be happy to see Connor leave if it benefits our future ( I realise he could be part of that if we don't sell him!). But hopefully not to Spurs, they seem to balls up all our decent youngsters!

I really hope he doesn't go. Hopefully ME will see how much selling him would affect the morale of the fans and players. £5million is nothing compared to what Connor could be worth to this club in a year or 2 in terms of fee and possible promotion?

I really dont think Clegg or evans will be involved in this. Keane will make the decision and its a case of do you take 5 mill and spend more on top of the agreed budget to HOPEFULLY make it easier to get in the PL.
I think Keane might take the cash to reinvest. the problem is Im scared at the thought of all these real men with character coming in. Where from and will they be any good. I dont think so !

Keane will make the decision and just hide behind the other two and say it was a financial decision and it allowed them to spend more on new players and one player for the cause was a good sacrifice.

To all those mentioning Gio, is he still at Spurs? Listed as a galatasaray player in the panini south Africa 2010 sticker album. Or is this just on loan?

Pims, think please. This is one of ME 's businesses. Why on earth would he leave a decision that could make the club millions, or sell a major assett etc to an Irish footballer. It will not be Keane's decision, though he will have a say in it. And his say will be "don't sell him", based on the "lynch" report. RK is not a politician, he just says what he believes at the time. And if ME thinks it's in his comapny's best interests to sell, then that is what he'll do. I cannot believe you really think all purchases and sales are down to a former Irish footballer.

And Gio is on loan, as far as I'm aware, unless Wiki is wrong.
