Town Up Chopra Offer
Town Up Chopra Offer
Friday, 4th Jun 2010 23:12

Town are understood to have made an increased offer of £3.75 million to Cardiff for striker Michael Chopra. The former Sunderland man is Roy Keane’s number one striking target as he looks to end the Blues’ goalscoring woes.

Chopra played for Keane at Sunderland and the Town boss is a huge admirer of the 26-year-old, who started his career at Newcastle.

The Blues were reported to have made an initial offer of £3 million, subsequently raising their bid to £3.5 million and now £3.75 million.

Keane is believed to be looking to pair Chopra, who is valued at £4 million by the Bluebirds, with Connor Wickham next season.

Good move, and on a player that is proven at this level. My only concern is will he get enough quality supply, we would surely have to get more creativity into that midfield of ours and play with a lot more width to give our strikers some kind of quality of service on which to thrive. A Wickham/Chopra partnership would give us far more of a genuine threat than any other we could muster last season, and indeed in the last two or three seasons.

This, whilst expensive, would represent much better value for money than Priskin, Martin etc who have nothing like the track record that Chopra has, and rather unsurprisingly have been disappointing signings at best.

Get him now!
How can be people be doubting this, he is a top class player, and the player we need to get us promoted. Bring it on!
The people on here probably went to one game last year and think they know the club inside out, well maybe be more loyal go to more games and actually realise what it means to our fans who follow home and away!

AlwaysBlue - Yes Chopra wants to play in the Premier League, every player does but don't rule out the Keane-factor. They obviously have mutual respect and it could be a big part to play in the deal. I can't see him earning huge wages either.

We need a player like Chopra, someone asked if he was any good "didn't score against us last season" well he scored 3 times more goals than our leading scorer last season.

This is the type of signing we need and let's hope there is a few more too.

While you're at it Keano push the boat out and bid for Whittingham, now that would be gooooood!!!

COYB!!!!

Wickham + chopra = goals! Goals = possible success! Quality costs, success is priceless! we need something to sing about next season. If we get chopra we will have on paper a very dangerous strikeforce who between them can bang 40 goals next season. coyb.

I don't know why people are worried about the fee. We all know Wickham is going to go for a big fee sometime during the next year, more than covering anything Keane is likely to lay out in the next few months.

sheftractor - congrats on your degree!

as for chopra i'd say he is a good player, bt like any other good striker he thrives on good supply, which he gets plenty of at cardfiff.

now if priskan didn't succeed here because of, among other things, a lack of good quality supply from midfield - how will this be any different with chopra?

keane has rooted out all creativity in the team.

Thats a whole lot of money, but Nottingham Forest spent near that amount on the mekon Earnshaw. Heres a video which demon strates the quality of Chopra, probably about the same quality as Earnshaw all round.

Hope this is true. I understand that some people are nervous due to the large fee but i think he is one plyer we really need. Proven goal scorer at this level. By god we need a finisher. Conner is quality but we can't pin too much on him. I stil think Priskin can come good, a look at his goals from h is time at Watford will show that.
As long as we can get that supply from midfield Chopre will do well.
We need to compete, and we are going to have so spend decent money. lets hope the deadwood Keane is getting rid of is freeing up money for wages and some talent.
I'd like to see Ipswich players next season, by that i mean not 4 or 5 loanees in the starting line up.

How on earth are people worrying about bankruptcy with just this one deal?!?! We've been given a transfer "budget", realise what "budget" means please!

We've just eaten into the budget more by paying a high amount for one player. Im sure this means that if keane has £10 million for example this summer, then he'll have just over 6 left if this is what Chopra moves for. Couple this with the fact that the club have a wage structure. With players released, it allows keane to argue a higher weekly wage for his new striker. Of course this would restrict the amount we can give other new arrivals, but for crying out loud we moaned all last season about how we desperately needed a better goal threat. Well Connor / Wickham upfront is that threat.

So STOP FINDING NEGATIVES and lets do this! COYB!!!

We're technically bankrupt already. The club owes ME close on £50m so another £4m won't hurt. If we want this guy we should pay the price and get on with it. What's the point in a raise from £3.5m to £3.75m? Jokers.

Remember the days when we found great players from lower down for low prices - much like the Scum have managed for years now? Real football ...

ok we get this chopra bloke in but we still have the management problem' how much money is it going to cost fix that ?

I'm afraid I don't go along with the "Chopra" is the missing piece argument. I think there is fundamental problems with RK management and the tactics of the team. One player is not going to solve our problems especially one that has proven he is not premiership class. We should going after players on the up not those on the down.

Proven striker at this level, if he helps us in a promotion push then 3.75 will seem like nothing. First signing that I am truly excited about. COYB.

titaniclown- as mentioned on ur name, yes u are a CLOWN!!

I dont really see the point or need of your comment?! Unless it was to annoy people, then uv succeeded.

How can you say that Chopra is on the the down?! Look at his stats... much better than any of our strikers. judging by ur comment, u want someone who is proven in the premiership (so ur a realistic fan i take it)...

Please name proven permiership strikers that we should go for.....

Look forward to your suggestions.

Very excited about this just what we need!!

My only thought is how much money will be left to strenghen other areas of the pitch to supply the balls for Chopra if he signs?

On a seperate point are we relaying our pitch?

ME did not pay the full 36 million if i remember rightly, so we are not 50 odd million in debt, and the debt he did pay was spread over his companies so they are not all ITFC's debt.

Daleyitfc added 15:01 - Jun 5
Why would he come here? Cardiff are there or thereabouts every season and have a human being as a manager : we are heading down the pan and have the anti-Christ as our manager (for now ...).
I presume we're funding this bid with the money we get from Leicester for Alex Bruce ....

dreblue added 15:18 - Jun 5
Daleyitfc- I think you need to get rid of the "itfc" from your name mate!

I cant see how an ITFC fan can be so negative about their team. Granted that we had an awful season last season, but that doesnt mean we "are heading down the pan"....

I admire your enthusiasm and optimism. Your a great fan!

i really struggle to see how anyone can see signing chopra as a bad move. he is clearly one of the top 5 strikers in the league. people talk about strikers needing service but top strikers make chances for themselves and score half chances. chopra has the quality to do this, he is a match winner - something we lacked big time last season.

I see robert koren still hasnt found a new club yet. he would be a major signing for us or any champiuonship club, if indeed he is not destined for a bigger club in a higher league. the guardian reports that he is attracting interest from celtic and german club hannover. he is probably waiting until after the world cup to sort his future, where he will know, good performances will see his stock increase and attract interest from bigger clubs.

it may be a long shot but he would be a fine acquisition. i hope the powers that be are at least looking into it...

Looks like a good move to me, and the price is about right for a proven striker at this level at the top of his game (26 years old). But I also agree it won't work unless he gets a decent supply from a more creative midfield - something that also will hopefully be fixed before we start. I also agree with some of the comments above that this was Priskin's problem. I think he's probably a decent player. With a rotation of Connor, Chopra and Priskin up front, I think we would get goals. But the Chopra deal is far from done yet, so although all this sounds more positive than of late, I'm not getting too excited just yet. COYB.

One thing I cannot stand is people constantly saying "why would he come here for?" Get a grip guys, its the summer now, last season is behind us now and gone. Yes it was terrible, but hey, its done with. If Chopra was thinking of moving here in January, then yes, you would be entitled to ask that question tbh.

So get real. We all know Chopra and Keane are close from there time at Sunderland, its now a rebuilding progress over the next 2 months or so for the new season. Keane wont remind him about last season, he'll be saying what he wants to achieve THIS forthcoming season. I'd pay 4mil for Chopra any day, scores 20 goals a season constantly in this league, and upfront with Wickham or Priskin, he could be lethal.

So my little rant is over, FORGET last season, where we finished, and where Cardiff finished. This now, and how Keane outlines his plans for next season to Chopra.
