Town Up Chopra Offer
Town Up Chopra Offer
Friday, 4th Jun 2010 23:12

Town are understood to have made an increased offer of £3.75 million to Cardiff for striker Michael Chopra. The former Sunderland man is Roy Keane’s number one striking target as he looks to end the Blues’ goalscoring woes.

Chopra played for Keane at Sunderland and the Town boss is a huge admirer of the 26-year-old, who started his career at Newcastle.

The Blues were reported to have made an initial offer of £3 million, subsequently raising their bid to £3.5 million and now £3.75 million.

Keane is believed to be looking to pair Chopra, who is valued at £4 million by the Bluebirds, with Connor Wickham next season.

Admiitedly last season was a disappointment BUT how many supporters of other Championship League clubs are fortunate enough to have a similar issue to debate? If this story is true, we should be appreciative that the club has still has strong ambition as evidenced by a serious bid for Chopra. I have started to get excited once again.

On a completely different subject, does anyone know whether England will play in white or red against USA?

UP THE TRACTOR BOYS!

I believe Keane can bring Chopra here, reguardless of Cardiff still being a Championship club. However, I do believe he will have to get rid of a few players first, to accomadate Chopra's wages. Although speanding 4mil on him, might suggest that Keane will have no more money to spend, unless he sells players.

This will either make or break RKs managership

he is a quality striker at this levels and has proven that but im still not sure he is worth paying that much for, i am interested to see how chopra and wickham would play together, but im stil not a chopra fan especially after how he decided it was ok to stamp all over owen garvan in last seasons game at PR, not ready to forgive him about that just yet!!!! but hey ho, lets see what happens!!! keane needs to do something, and it needs to pretty early on in the new season, if we are stil playing terrible end of september, i think he should be on his way....

biggest problem all season has been players who come in (except Rosenior) are either from Sunderland or once played for Sunderland. It seems RK has nil clout to interest other quality players to play for the club!.... people were yelling at JM but at least he manage to attract players, though on loan, like Ricardo Fuller and Giovani Do Santos here.....

The question isn't whether Chopra is proven at this level, he has shown he is capable of scoring goals in the Championship. The concern is that this is a huge amount of money for any Championship club to be spending on any one player, and money doesn't alwayt buy success, even if it is spent on 'proven' players. Many people were saying the same sort of thing about Priskin last year, and if Chopra is equally ineffective then the club would take another massive hit. We've been burned too many times over the last few years or so on big money signings for RK to take the same cavalier approach to transfers as he did last summer. ME is not a bottomless pot of money, and if RK spends his budget as ineffectively as last year, then the club could potentially be financially hamstrung for years to come. Lets hope that if this transfer does happen, Chopra proves to be the missing link that fires us to promotion and not another expensive flop.

Re. the £50m, no ME didn't pay that but that's what the club owes him. He bought c£35m of ITFC debt for 25p in the pound from Aviva thus paying c£8.75m for it but the club still owes him the full £35m. On top of that he charges the club 8% a year interest which adds to the debt so nearly £3m per year more. Then there's his actual investment of £8m in preference shares and the interest on that etc etc.

I fear £50m is a low figure ...

Re the above .. the point being that we're so far in the financial sh1t we may as well p1ss away £4m on a player. It's ME's money and there's no way he'll get it back without a decent run in the Money League

I really really hope we get him as I think he would be an excellent addition to the squad. I watched the play-off final and he was by far Cardiff's best player on the day, showed great pace, anticipation, skill and was millimetres away from a hatrick. He is a goalscorer with 21 last year and a goalscore is what we have desperately lacked since Bent and Kuqi left.
People talk about Priskin being as good a talent as him but Priskin had half a good season at Watford whilst Chopra has scored goals at this level over more years. I could also see him link well with Wickham as he did with Bothroyd. Yes £3.75m is a big fee but 20 a season goalscorers cost big bucks. I just pray we get him!

sign him up , 4 mill for a goal scorer if he scores 20 goals next season for us then we will be top 4 material , him and Wickham , big player should win headers flick ons even got pace and scorering abitly , chopra , scores goals and movement is great , i think wickham would assist alot of his goals. great pear , would be very dissapointed if we didnt get him now , would be very exiting pearing !! also Priskin stead / pablo bench ?? just need to left Wing back buy or even loan , then buy a Winger thats gunna get round the back then with that team i would be suprized if we didnt challenge top 4

re: hollie_ipswich86

I'd rather have him here stomping all over our opponents than with Cardiff stomping on our players! To misquote Abraham Lincoln: "I don't care if he stomps, does he score goals?"

Can't Roy unearth a bargain striker for under £1m?

naaridge1coly7 added 09:31 - Jun 6
ummmmmmm nooo johnny boy id be really surprised if me actually lets this happen after last years failures and terrible style of football, just sack the muppet and get a manager in who can actually attract players that dont have some sort of previous relationship with him.
Its obvious this is needed and why does everyone suddenly think we ll turn into title contenders with 1 potential signing-says it all to me im afraid-doesnt say much for the rest of the squad either.

ipswichfrancis !! I believe Ricardo Fulller was Joe Royles signing, and Giovani was John Gormans connections NOT JIM MAGILTONS.

The top clubs in The Championship still spend large quantities of money and this sort of figure to get in a proven Championship striker is about right. I understand arcs concerns, but I'd like to take a more positive slant on it and say, that was the deal that took us to the Premiership!

I may be repeating someone elses comment but I haven't had time to read them all. I really hope I'm wrong, but the way I read this is that it will be Chopra in and Wickham moving on. We wouldn't surely offer this sum of money for Chopra otherwise would we?

I'm with Manic Blue on this one. Add up what we've spend in the last 3 Seasons and consider the squad we have now. £4m for Chopra, money well spent for me! I've an idea we'll get some back with the sales of outbound players.

We need to keep Big G McAuley and Delaney at the back central pair and we'll be good. Bit worried with Big G being touted around The 'Gers and other Top Clubs!

Fingers Crossed.

A Chopra and Wickham signing sounds a very interesting proposition. I really hope something comes of this. I wouldn't spend more than £4M though. The only worry is how we can afford a) his wages b) other players. Hopefully we can offload some other high earners and I'm afraid that would mean Pablo and Stead.

A lot of people seem to be thinking that if we buy Chopra and pair him with Wickham then all our problems are over. But there are 2 huge flaws in this.
Firstly, it's still too early to place a whole season on 17yr old Connor, no matter how good he's been of late. He'll have to be used wisely.
Secondly, even having a player like Chopra that can take half chances, there's still the problem of the team as a whole playing fairly dull, unimaginative, no-width football. This problem is rooted deeper than just the playing personel. But you never know, this problem may be solved come Xmas.

Dear lord let this be true! this guy can play up front with any1 so if connor has a bad spell then he can partner any of our number of strikers up fron!!!! lets get darren ambrose in as well then we will be sorted!

DreBlue apologies for the slow reply but not only have you failed to understand my point but you have also failed to see the irony in my usename!!
My point was that I think we should be looking for players on the up - therefore coming from lower leagues but who have the potential to be real premiership class.
I dont think Chopra is on the up. Look at his career path: Newcastle, Sunderland, Cardiff, Ipswich(?) He has continually moved down the league because he was given a crack at the premiership and was woefully short.
I would prefer to have a side that a capable of competeing in the premier league rather than just a team than can get promoted and then needs to be dismantled. HIstory tells us that this really doesn't work unless you throw alot of money at it.
