Mowbray Again Linked With Return
Mowbray Again Linked With Return
Wednesday, 9th Jun 2010 15:16

Former coach and skipper Tony Mowbray is again reported to be in line to succeed Roy Keane as Town manager. Rumours that Mowbray recently spent time at Portman Road have been circulating for some days with a national newspaper claiming on Monday that the ex-Celtic boss could take over from Keane before the season starts.

According to the latest report, Mowbray met with owner Marcus Evans over the weekend and may be seen as a potential successor to Keane should Town start 2010/11 poorly.

It is unlikely that such a meeting could have taken place over the weekend with the 46-year-old having been on holiday with his family in Florida since late May.

Mowbray is currently on gardening leave having been relieved of his duties at Celtic at the end of March. Until an agreement is reached regarding the termination of his Parkhead contract, the ex-West Brom and Hibs boss is unlikely to take another job.

Speculation regarding Keane’s future had all but disappeared since chief executive Simon Clegg dismissed widespread claims that his sacking was imminent back in March until returning earlier this week.

Looks like the jackals of the press have still got us in their sights, seems we have another season of attacks to look forward to :-)

Fingers crossed we can get rid of Keane now and get Mowbray appointed - rather than sack Keane mid-season and be scraping around for a decent replacement

Im a Celtic fan and advise you to stay wll clear of Mowbray. He wont improve Ipswich. You have been warned.

While I have the greatest of respect for Mogga, until we hear otherwise, KEANO is our manager. And to be honest, what has Mogga achieved that Keano hasn't? Mogga got West Brom promoted, Keano got Sunderland promoted. End of.

I think that while replacing Keano with Mogga would quieten down the Keane-haters on here (at least temporarily), for me it would be a case of frying pan and fire - replacing one manager with moderate/limited experience with another!

I don't think it would be in our interest to replace Keano at the present time (although a poor start to the season would make his position untenable I think), but if the club really did want a change, it probably should be someone with greater experience and a better track record than Mogga currently has. Because changing manager now - especially a gambled appointment - could well mean another season of rebuilding and obscurity. A proven manager may be able to turn around things more quickly, and we have seen with Keano how little patience some fans seem to have.

For goodness sake, let's enjoy the World Cup and then get fully behind Roy and the lads and go for it next season!

COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!

In fairness to mowbray, 3 clubs managed(discounting 3 games with us) and both his time at hibs and west brom would be seen as a sucess.

What Mowbray has done that keane has not is...

Had west Brom playing quality attacking football.

ALSO PHIL, the eadt report said mowbray had discussions, not that he met him.
Perfectly possible to have had discussions over the phone or video link, even if mogga was in florida.
It is strange these stories are coming out now, when we are apparently about to spend several more millions on keane signings. Maybe evans is getting these stories out to make sure keane knows how immediate the situation is for him in terms of a good start

Do we think this negative press is helping? this is not helping the Chopra deal, Keano!

I know this might sound a bit daft, but seeing as he is unemployed do you think he might be being touched up for this much vaunted assistant manager post rather than as a replacement for RK

It really is dry for the media at the moment isnt it, whilst everyone is in South Africa they are bored trying to come up with random fairy tales, although mogga a legend here, not for me thanks.

i have no reason to doubt the statement that Evans put in the match day programme at the end of the season, Clegg has been in Malta for the FL meeting - I know this site needs hits to keep its advertisers happy as of course newspapers need to sell copies to keep their advertisers happy - but at some point all this speculation has to stop and we start the season supporting the club, the manager and the players!
So unless anyone has the balls to put their name against these rumours, leaks and down right lies we would all be best served if they were not published.

So he's not being linked as assistant to Roy then?

I still don't believe it - unless Keane is having that house in Woodbridge remodelled as per Mowbray's requirements....
But, IMHO, I would trade Keane in for Mowbray tomorrow.
For anyone who has been with ITFC since Robsons time; Keane is in the process of tearing the heart out of the club.
We have enough backing, we do not NEED Keane to do the job...there's plenty of better choices and Mowbray is definitely one of them.

typical star , desperate to sell papers by making statements they can't back up with facts .

If Keane was going in the near future he wouldn't be given 4 million to bid on chopra so this clearly a load of sh*t

why not take mowbray as an assistant manager keane is looking for... i reckon they would be great pairing, keane is looking for someone who can stand up at him and mowbray sure can :))
and then if keanes is sacked he's ready to take over :)

i reckon mogga would disrespect keane just as much as i do if he was a assistant

That seems to be a complete nonsence! If ME was to fire Keane he would have done it before the end of last season like he did with Jim at least to give the new manager some time to figure out the team and the possible changes he need to make before the season starts. Now it is pointless. I assume this news as a complete rubish. My opinion is - ME will stick with Keano unless we start the new season like the leas one.

Some of these tabloids and local boys are days behind. If we appoint Mowbray it will for me be a backward step. Failed at Celtic. He did okay at WBA - but inherited a very good side - pretty similar to RK and Sunderland. I honestly don't believe Mowbray is a better option.

Anyway - this type of story seems absolute rubbish. It also doesn't help the team.
