Leicester Striker Linked With Town
Leicester Striker Linked With Town
Thursday, 1st Jul 2010 17:38

Town are reported to be chasing Leicester striker DJ Campbell. The 28-year-old spent the end of last season on loan at Blackpool, who are keen to sign the 5ft 10in tall frontman on a permanent basis in time for their inaugural Premier League campaign.

Campbell, who scored a hat-trick for the Tangerines in their play-off semi-final at Nottingham Forest, started his career in non-league, playing for Chesham, Stevenage, Billericay (loan) and Yeading before being given his introduction into the Football League by Brentford in 2005/06.

From there, the Londoner won himself a £500,000 move to Birmingham during their 2005/06 Premier League campaign.

In July 2007, Campbell moved on to Leicester for £1.6 million, subsequently joining Blackpool, Derby and then Blackpool again on loan.

After winning promotion to the Premier League at Wembley, the striker, who netted 14 times last season, said he was keen to sign for Blackpool full-time, but talks between the Seasiders and Foxes have broken down with the Midlanders wanting a £1.5 million for his services, more than the Lancastrians are willing to pay.

An England National Game XI (non-league England) player earlier in his career, Campbell has a year left on his Leicester contract.

In April Campbell was arrested in connection with a stabbing outside a London nightclub and released on bail pending further enquiries.

A new striker is very much on Roy Keane’s wish-list ahead of the new season with Cardiff’s Michael Chopra understood to be his first choice.

Well if we pay more than £1.5 M then will need to sell 2 or 3 first. Maybe we have outs in pipeline or maybe not.

Give me strength, have we really stooped that low. Utter dross. I'm already starting to be pizzed of with this season.
We seem to be releasing players who could possibly still do a job with the right support. Whether you like players like Garvin and Pablo, we certainly play a better style of football and look more like scoring when their in the team.

Never really rated him that highly although he was awesome for Blackpool at the end of last season. Think there's better strikers around in that price bracket in the league below us tbh.

I reckon he would work well with Wickham up front, Connor as the target man and DJ working just off him.

We should be able to get the price down to 1M if we do a part exchange with Bruce, maybe?

evans is more likely to fork out 1.5m for him, as i dont think we will sell enough of the 8 listed to get chopra.
but what about hooper???

doubt he would want to drop to our standard of football and mangement.

would be better than any player we got if we did get him though!

I think Hooper is going to Middlesbrough for 2.5m

Probably will steer clear of Keane and go to Blackpool for Premier League footy instead of lower league mediocracy with our chief. We will get him in a year on a free and that price sounds about right.

There are much better options for that money. How about looking in a league (or two) below - Simeon Jackson or Charlie Austin anyone?! Or how about you swallow your pride Keano and give Stead a go! Never been impressed with DJ Campbell on or off the pitch. He'll go to the Prem with Blackpool given the choice anyway.

He has been around a bit and will be 29 in November, so let's not offer anywhere near £1.5M for him as we wouldn't get any of that money back if we sold him on in a year or two. Leicester only paid £1.6M three years ago, so how can he be worth £1.5M now?!

Campbell's scoring record is pretty good (9 in 43 at Birmingham, 3 in 8 at Derby, 17 in 35 at Blackpool) apart from Leicester where he only scored 4 in 38 and even struggled in League One apparently.

Oh dear God! Every day I log on here and wait for the next dagger to enter my heart.
Surely this can't be right. Ok he scored a couple of decent looking goals in the playoff for Blackpool, but he really isn't a good enough or consistent enough player to add anything to us. To be honest he is about the level of Kevin Lisbie, but possibly not as good.

DJ Campbell actually scored 20 goals in 43 games this season, all goals were in the championship as well.

what is keane doing he is clueless and must go ,we missed out last year when we could have poached paul lambert a man who has an eye for lower league players ,grant holt scored more than town on his own ,and he must be a good motivator to win the league with a team who could have folded after getting thrashed 7 1 by colchester, a proper legend unlike the pretender keane a legend in his own mind

I rate him as highly as Lisbie. Gulp.

I didn't rate this guy - but he did very well for Blackpool. At £1.5M he is cheaper than Chopra - BUT is he going to do the business??

Holloway took D J Campbell on loan but then he is a poor manager and Blackpool were a disaster last season and didn't finish in top two. They only got promotion via playooffs.

Is DJ Cambell better than Jorden Rhodes? lets have a vote!!

Look, he's an average striker that had a good period for his loan club, If Blackpool seriously want him then whether we like him or not, he's not gonna turn down the chance of Prem Football & wages to come & play for us is he!!
