Murphy Close to Celtic Move
Murphy Close to Celtic Move
Thursday, 15th Jul 2010 17:11

Celtic boss Neil Lennon says he is close to completing the signing of former Town loanee Daryl Murphy from Sunderland. The Irish frontman had been mentioned in connection with a permanent move to Portman Road this summer.

Lennon says the £1.3 million move is near to being done: “We think we’re pretty close with Murphy from Sunderland.”

The ex-Northern Ireland international has been a fan of the Waterford-born frontman for some time: “He’s quick, he’s 6 foot 2 or 3 and I’ve watched him for a few years. I think he could take the hits for us up here.”

Murphy, 27, scored six goals in 18 appearances while with the Blues between January and May.

Great news! I would have been very disappointed if we'd signed him. I wish him all the best since he scored 6 very important goals when we needed them most however After that he looked extraordinarilly average and for once I dont believe it was down to our poor service more his lack of motivation. We can do better even with our apparently low budget set by Mr Evans. Anyway best of luck Daryl but seriously Celtic... Sunderland must be laughing at getting £1.3million for him!

All is just falling into place without Roy doing a thing.

Why is Daryl Murphy getting a hard time from ITFC fans??
It was his goals that helped kick start our climb away from relegation and gave the team some much missing confidence. He was only on loan, diddnt cost us anything and just look what he gave us in return!

He looks cut of for Scot Prem football. He has the ability to score 15 -20 goals maybe more at Celtic. He deserves his chance at Celtic and I wish him all the best up there!

If we dont get Chops then I hope we buy Hooper.
Murphy didnt take long to look lethargic for us. Not concerned he is off elsewhere. A good price for sunderland.

I think Murphy's wages made him an unrealistic target. I can't understand the moaning though. The guy did well. His strike record was better than Pablo, Stead and Priskin. Plus, his injury later in the season meant he didn't perform to his earlier potential. Murphy has to go down as a decent RK signing - although obviously there are a few who are out to slate Roy regardless of what he does.

I agree with the Celtic comments. This is a team playing champions league football next season and they sign. A Sunderland reject on loan at a poor championship team last year. They must be jumping with joy at that one. Or are times really that hard up there. The days of henrik larson esk signings are well and truly gone.

I suppose we should be grateful for his six goals here, as without them we could be in League One now. He started well but then faded and I agree he looks about the same level as Stead. In summary, I am glad he came for the loan spell but do not want him back.

Just goes to show how poor the SPL is when the top teams by championship rejects!

Henrik Larsson is on another planet compared to Murphy: both with regard to attitude and ability. I'd rather have Larsson NOW, even though he's given up playing and is currently manager of 2nd division Landskrona in Sweden. Yes, by all means, thanks, Murphy, for the goals, but you were not the way forward.
