Town Linked With Ex-Manchester United Keeper Saturday, 24th Jul 2010 23:33
Town have held talks with former Manchester United keeper Roy Carroll, according to one of Sunday's tabloids. The 32-year-old, who is currently with Odense BK in Denmark, played alongside Blues boss Roy Keane at Old Trafford.
Keane is said to be ready to offer Carroll the chance to return to the UK, the 19-times capped Northern Irish international having been named the 2009 Goalkeeper of the Year in Denmark.
Enniskillen-born Carroll started his career with Hull City, subsequently moving on to Wigan Athletic, Manchester United, West Ham United, Rangers and Derby County prior to signing a three-year deal with Odense last summer.
Town are certainly on the lookout for another keeper with Keane having said he likes to have three glovesmen on the books on a number of occasions.
On Friday, Sunderland boss Steve Bruce confirmed that the Blues had made an enquiry regarding Márton Fülöp after reports that Town had tabled a £1 million bid for the Hungarian international.

We need a keeper (for Cover/Competition), CB for same, Striker cause we don't have one! but it doesn't matter what order they come in. I think Carrol isn't the best but for sure isn't the worst available. We've release RW and got shot of his high wages. If Carol comes in on half or Quarter that wage, for me this is good business and gives a balance to the SQUAD (not team) - Fulop however I see as more 1st Team, but again it's down to Fees and Wages - Cleggy and Keano know what available and what's in the coffers - best let them decide and we can get behind each and every one of them next season. Odense are a top Danish team, second in their top flight in 08/09 when Carroll was keeper of the year, regularly in Europe. I don't think Carroll is coming here to be a back-up. Didn't he have some serious mental health issues?

Yes we need to keep things in perspective and yes these links are not confirmed and the manager may have something good up his sleeve, but ... We are 2 weeks away from the start of the new season We were in crisis for most of last year, largely because of dreadful decisions and indecision during the pre-season period. We are shaping up very similar this time around. We have let David & Richard Wright go and look to be bringing in Mark Kennedy & Roy Carroll - backwards steps in both cases, both at an age that offers no future. WIll their wages be much lower than the two released? Who knows, but Kennedy cost £75k in any event. Where is the future planning, the moves that make you think, yes manager has a plan & you can see the squad taking shape? I can't. Where are the signings of 25 year olds who have shown they can cut it at Championship level and offer hope of being able to step up if ... (well I can dream) Hopefully Conor Hourican will be a decent signing, but we can't expect too much of an impact in he short term. We are about to lose Garvan, Bruce & an other, possibly Stead or Walters. These are reasonable players at a good age and 2 years ago we would have expected them to be important to our squad by now, but they have all regressed and will fetch about 30% or less of what they should. I am okay with seeing any of them go to be fair, because I have higher expectations & aspirations for my club, but for crying out loud let's have better players coming in if so. I don't want 34 year olds who's best days are behind him and will require replacing again next season. I fear more panic buying when the season kicks off as the manager desperately tries to cobble something together after wasting months on signings that never come off with little or no back up plan, meanwhile Middlesbro & even Norwich pick up some decent players for half nothing nice & early. Have another look at our opening 10 fixtures, not easy, especially when you're only starting to get a team together while you're up and running. This is how I rationally see things as they currently are after years of watching ITFC and football in general. I am not negative for the sake of it, I am not a "moaner" who will not get behind the team, because they are my team and I want the best for them always. These are just my objective views.

When people say a striker is a priority, this means a priority for our limited funding not that Ipswich can't work on 2/3/4 deals at once. We have been told over recent weeks how money is limited and we must sell before we can buy, so it is reasonable to think that our funds should be directed at strikers rather than a goalkeeper. We already have three professional goalkeepers: Murphy, Lee-Barrett and McLoughlan, then there is always the option of bringing in a loanee if needed. A striker should have been priorty last season. Why did Keane spend around £1.3M (plus wages of, what 600K a year?) on right-winger Carlos Edwards when we have Jon Walters in that position? Another example of wrong priorities, as that money could have bought a decent forward.

This can only be speculation. If RK is seriously thinking about bringing in another keeper it surely can only be to compete with Murphy who he has publicly stated is in line to replace Given as the next Ireland goalie. It looks that RK is trying to destabalise the position of BM 2 weeks before the start of the season and he could not do better in this aim than associate the club with other keepers. Some might call it healthy competion but others might think it its the least of our probems Complete shambles

The local samaritans and counsellors will be please with the transfer news from PR. Both Carroll and Chopra have a chequered past and I think you'll find that Kennedy hasnt always been whiter than white. Looks as though the plan is to scare the opposition to death rather than play them off the park.

andygizmo - this is what Keane meant by wanting "characters".

Agree with Pim's, Murphy doesn't fill me with confidence and his distribution is horrendous. Really do feel that a proper no.1 is needed although im not sure that Carroll is that no. 1. , i would prefer Fulop. A decent goalie settles the defence and stops you loosing games, stating the obvious i know, in the same way that Wright stopped us loosing games during Jim's last season in charge towards the end of that season.

When I saw we were after a keeper from Odense I thought finally, Keane is actually casting the net out! Then I read he is Irish and an old mate. It all makes sense . . . . . . . . . . .

Laughable that anyone can say 'what a joke this club has become' - based on a rumour! ChamberM - if you are so embarrassed, why not go and 'support' someone else?

oh hes irish,surely not!

I agree with ChambersM . The club has become a joke ! unfortunately not a very funny one ! I'm a Garvan fan and believe other players inc Bruce, Priskin , Stead would have been useful team /squad players and needed to be kept. Keane is destroying Ipswich Town FC .
ramseyn added 18:29 - Jul 25
Kent blue - problem is, you say those players mentioned could be useful squad players. That's exactly it.... Those players are the ones taking up the wage bill stopping additional signings. You can't have that from squad players.
Lightningboy added 21:20 - Jul 25
Agree with you kentblue...makes me long for the Joe Royle years & at least you knew Jim had the club's best interests at heart and that he was actually trying to build something...we're just turning into a refuge for Keane's ex-mates & ex-players...it's a bloody joke...can't believe how many are still trying to stick up for this clown.

good, solid experienced keeper, I say " Why Not ". There should be healthy competition for every position.. Goal keepers included.....Might not be considered a priority but look at the situation we found ourselves in last term with keeper injuries..

Whilst I would prefer Furlop as I believe him to be a much more consistent player, I do believe the addition of a first choice goalkeeper or at least someone to fight for the place with Murphy is a good idea. I remain unconvinced on Murphy to be honest, whilst he did make a few decent saves last year I remain unsure on his quality. Maybe it's no more than my worry that he looks a little short for a goalkeeper and therefore cannot command his area… not sure. (But Laurie Sivell was small and he was awesome!) So given I believe we need an additional good quality keeper, I'd say Furlop first choice… Carrol… not 100% convinced, but I do believe he's better than Murphy.

Please God no! Carroll is a joke surely, his bumblings & fumblings are well documented, a disaster. I agree with kentblue & Lightninboy our club is fast becoming a joke under the so called management of Keane, bring back Big Fat Joe at least the football was entertaining and the players liked him!!!
