Town Face Trip to Crewe
Town Face Trip to Crewe
Wednesday, 11th Aug 2010 22:20

Town will play League Two Crewe Alexandra away in the second round of the Carling Cup. The tie will be played in the week commencing 23rd August. Crewe beat Derby at home in round one.

The sides last met in round three of the same competition in October 2001 at Gresty Road with the Blues winning 3-2. Martijn Reuser scored twice and Alun Armstrong once for Town with Rob Hulse and Dave Brammer netting for the home side.

During Town's 1999/00 promotion season Crewe knocked the Blues out of the competition in the second round in a tie played over two legs. The Gresty Road game ended 2-1 to the Alex with Mark Rivers and Colin Little scoring for the home side and Mark Venus for the Blues.

The Portman Road leg ended 1-1 with James Scowcroft scoring for Town and Mark Rivers grabbing an 86th minute clincher for the Cheshire side.

The teams met most recently in 2005/06 in the Championship with the Blues doing the double over the Railwaymen as they were relegated, both games ending 2-1.

Overall, Town have won nine matches between the temas, Crewe three, with three ending in draws. The three Carling Cup games mentioned above are the only cup ties the teams have previously played.

The draw is Town's fourth away Carling Cup tie in a row having been given three successive games at home prior to that.

Meanwhile, Cardiff striker Ross McCormack is reported to have given his shirt to a fan at the end of the Bluebirds' 4-1 extra-time Carling Cup victory over Burton Albion this evening, a move which has been intepreted as a farewell to the Welsh club. Town target McCormack had scored two of Cardiff's goals after coming off the bench.

Disappointing to be drawn away yet again in the Carling Cup. Oh well, at least it saves us being stung for the tickets by Clegg!

Could Ross McCormack and Jason Scotland really be on the brink of signing for Ipswich?! Fantastic news if so, and perhaps we really can believe that Ipswich can challenge for promotion at last?

Thank goodness for an away tie - I really object to paying to see this mickey mouse contest. Play the boys, lose by the odd goal in three and get this farce out the way for another year. Why we risked any first teamers at Exeter I don't know. Keane and the entire first team squad minus the internationals should have stayed keeping fresh and injury free in Suffolk whilst an academy side could have travelled.

What's more important - a trip to Crewe or three points on Saturday?

Big_gaz67 - 3 points on Saturday

We should win against Crewe. Blackburn should win against Norwich. And Sunderland will win against Colcherster. And knowing our luck we will be facing Sunderland in the 3rd round.

I think that as McCormack played for Cardiff. The move is further away than we think. Why would Cardiff risk him getting injured. And don't players values drop of the player is cup tied before you buy them?

Robdaful? If stead is involved in the deal, why did we play him Tuesday night? And as Keane said the other day, he has spoken to the players he wants, and they want to come here, it's now down to Clegg and Evans.

McCormack was seen to turn his gaze for full two seconds in a vaguely north-easterly direction during the match against Burton Albion. This has been interpreted as an expression of longing to leave his current club and move upwards and onwards, with ITFC his mooted destination. Others have stated he was merely picking up the ball for a throw-in.

agree with marshallmullet.Football is all about good days out (wembley) and winning trophys not finishing 15th in premiership, you don't see those positions on honours lists

Long way from home on a Tuesday night again. The Gods of Carling don't appear to be looking down on us this year. Play the kids again, Roy, they know no fear nor curses. But make sure you get all the parents' permission slips first.

This will be a good game as this should mean when we go through the next round it should be at home against a stronger team.

Loving the trip to Gresty Rd - marvellous. Saw Scowie score his one and only hat-trick at Crewe. On street parking and a decent chippy. What's not to like...

Took my youngest lad there one year, a night match and he was caught short lets say, before we went into the ground. Asked a steward, who took us into the ground virtually though the players tunnel and into an area under what was (and still might be) the Railtrack Stand and back out again once 'done'. The guy couldn't be helpful enough.

Always a pleasure... I also recall Jermaine Wright scoring an absolute pearler down there. And the time that Alan Lee went off with a hamstring, never quite the same player after he came back from that injury...

I for one will not be as disrespectful to Crewe and say it's gonna be easy, iv seen them alot over the years and they Always play proper football, also they did beat derby in the last round, I am confident that town will put in the hardworking display that will be needed to win through, in relation to the cup itself I beleive a balance needs to be struck in how seriously we take it, winning breeds confidence and we all love a good cup run, I was there when Birmingham robbed/knobbled us out of the semi by blatantly sabotaging there pitch, however with the squad thin on the ground with various reasons we must do exactly what we did at Exeter and play the youngsters, this is not a bad thing as it's far better experience than playing in the reserves at the mo, and we have a really promising crop coming through. So here's to a good game at crew, then hopefully a home game against top oppsition in the next round.

Big_Gaz76 - They are both of equal importance.

It really disappoints me when the big 4 undermine cup competitions, let alone Championship sides.

Get over yourself.

Always a good game against Crewe, shame it's an away fixture again.

As for players being cup-tied, no disrespect to this competition but it's not exactly the Champions League, is it? It might be one of the lesser competitions but it always provides vital experience for the younger/reserve players, and who would complain at having some extra silverware in the cabinet come march?

I for one would love us to win the League Cup. Its the one domestic competition we have never won, and it is the one thing that the budgies HAVE won (twice?) and can crow about over us. With the Prem clubs (and some Champo clubs) not really taking it so seriously, there is every chance that a club of our size/stature could win it.

Until your Arsenals/Liverpools/Manyoos get knocked out of the FA Cup or have no chance of winning the League, THEN they take it seriously ....

COYB!!

Work away in the north a couple of days a week, so ideal for me, especially as we have no midweek northern league games this year. You might think i'm being a bit selfish thinking like this.....and you'd be right!

Beat Crewe, draw Leeds, Sunderland and Liverpool away in the next three rounds, cheers!

What with the two away FA Cup ties last season, and the trip to Chelsea the season before that, I make it seven consecutive away draws now. That's not lucky, is it?
