Keane: Win But We Didn't Play Well
Keane: Win But We Didn't Play Well
Saturday, 28th Aug 2010 18:04

Boss Roy Keane felt Town beat Bristol City 2-0 at Portman Road despite not playing particularly well. Tamás Priskin scored his first goal at home and Jason Scotland netted on his Blues league debut as Town climbed to third in the Championship, behind leaders QPR and Cardiff on goal difference.

Keane says that despite the two-goal cushion, he wasn’t relaxed going into injury time: “It’s never comfortable at 1-0 or even 2-0. One goal changes the course of the game and we’ve been there before. You can’t relax in the Championship you see a lot of late goals and teams put you under pressure.

“We took our chances without playing particularly well. What pleased me most was that we weren’t that great again today but what we have to learn to do as a football club is to win games without being brilliant, and we’ve done that today, although we had some decent chances.”

The Town manager is pleased his players are taking their opportunities this season: “Whether we can continue that is the big question mark. When you look at when we played Bristol City at home last year, I’d say we had twice as many chances but we ended up drawing 0-0 with their keeper getting man of the match. This year Tamás made the most of his opportunity and then Jason scored a poacher’s goal."

The Blues boss was delighted with his new striker: "On another day he could have had a hat-trick. What I liked about his goal was that he was on the move.

"He was sniffing and we didn't have anyone like that last season. Hopefully he'll give us that and the best thing that can happen to a striker when he joins a new club is to score a goal."

Keane switched Priskin to a central role in the second half in front of Scotland and was pleased that the move came off: “It worked, but that’s a credit to the players, they adapted and what you find with good players and any good team is that they can change shape during the game, like we did at Crewe the other night.

“I’m very, very pleased with the players. They’re ready for a break some of them. It’s been a good start of the season, but with any injuries or suspensions coming up, we’ll be tested.”

Keane says there are no new injuriesafter today's game and that he still doesn’t expect any new signings before Tuesday’s deadline.

Bristol City manager Keith Millen thought his side were in a good position at the break: “At half-time I was quite pleased with what we did in the first half. They had a couple of chances but we had a few chances that the keeper had to save as well.

“I felt at half-time we’d given ourselves a platform from which to step on and win the game, but unfortunately we gave away two goals that you wouldn’t be happy schoolboys conceding.

“There was a mix-up for the first goal and for the second it was too easy for the lad to get the shot away, we’ve dropped it and they’ve followed up with the rebound.

“It was disappointing because you could see our lads’ heads drop. I think the way we conceded the goals affected us. You’d like to think we’d get a more positive response to try and get the game back. They were shocked at how poor the goals were.”

Millen confirmed that former England keeper David James made a call to defender Liam Fontaine on the first goal but that the message didn’t get through: “There was communication between the two of them, which led to the mix-up. Jamo did call for it, but it never got there.

“Unfortunately, we gave Ipswich two goals and they’ve not had to play particularly well to beat us today, which is disappointing.”

After reading the articlei would of thought we had won 1 0,and not played very well at all! I was buzzing for the whole match, and see a completly different side from last year! A team that is on a high, and with such togetherness! The new formation works a treat for all those players!fulop was awesome in goal~load and clear! Mac won everything! Hyam is outstanding, and never knew he was that good! Leadbitter and Norris look like two new signings each worth 3 million! Scotland was such a threat! And quick feet for a big guy! And priskin got stuck in, and grew with confidence and deserved his place in the team! Were now sitting in 3rd~ behind two very good teams~qpr and cardiff. But we deserve our position! I have a feeling that this will be the season to remember! another striker and an experienced holding midfielder would be perfect! Then promotion here we come (: COYB!

good stuff, was really impressed by Priskin today.

I think both managers are right to say we didn't play that well today, but we look well organised, compact and difficult to beat. We deserved the bit of luck because Bristol City never looked like causing us any serious problems.

I can't believe some of the negative comments I was at the game and was very impressed with the whole team particularly the defence and gareth maculay just is awsome didn't give them a sniff all day! I am priskins biggest critic but for me today he was outstanding good in air getting shots off took his goal very well and worked his socks off so today tamas you have shut me up well done long may it continue. I don't agree with roy that we didn't play well I thought we were exceptional particularly in second half let's keep this up with three new players in we will have great shout come on you super blues !!!!

Players were applauded off the field at the end, this says something about the performance today.

No sign of CHAMBERSM he must have gone on holiday!!

Scotland always looks likely to score, although can everyone stop calling him a 'big man', he is 5"8. He is however quite strong and has the ability to hold the ball up, he is quick, bullish, scores goals and has intelligent movement. He will bang them in for us, as hopefully will Priskin, who was exceptional today.

and I can't believe some of the deluded rubbish coming off the Keane can do no wrong crowd. 4 games apparently is enough to prove them right. An entire season of mediocrity is just a fluke like.

I'm really happy we've started the season well, and I'm happy that Keane appears to have sorted a few things out (the shape looks good, team looks well-organised, compact, strong). Today was good. Not vintage stuff mind, and we had a good slice of luck.

alfromcol :

No doubt we will lose a game this season (as will every side!!)- and no doubt our good friend ChambersM will be on here like a shot calling for Roys head - I hope when this happens you and the other true ITFC fans will shoot this guy down!

You beat me to it! - I am happy to be stood corrected, but the ONLY post I have seen from him on here is one moaning about Keane selling Stead !! - Like you say, the first game we lose, he and all the other anti Keane bores will be out in force.

More importantly, not only have we made a superb start to the season, we are playing some good football as well. May be a short on depth but all Keanes signings are coming good. I thought we played quite well today, Keano's expectation's are obviously a lot higher than he gets credit for.

Up the town ! Keep up the good work ! - At least its keeping ChambersM and his crew quiet ! - A much nicer website to visit without his negative gross !

RB may be a position that we need strengthening but today I thought Jaime Peters was excellent! He was pacey, strong and knew what passes to play and warmt too bad go the air.

No nonsense display, played a little too deep in the first half IMO, but with the help of a James off day, a Tamas on day we grabbed the points. Well done to the whole team for a gritty performance.

Carsey bless you fullop was the one defending the sir bobby robson stand first half, I suspect from your comments you were watching the wrong goal keeper!!!!! Fulop is a quality goal keeper - for every cross james fumbled fullop caught his with conviction, for every ball james kicked into touch fullop kicked or threw the ball acurately. Maybe once or twice he kicked the ball two far down pitch but nowhere near as many times as we experienced last year! I actually am finding it hard to critisise any player - a grand team effort and unlike last year once we went ahead we never looked nervous. That said I do think we will need to raise our game against the cardiffs of this division. Only slight weakness is jp at right back, personally I think he is a teriffic impact player - someone to bring off the bench to change a game with his speed - a few times yesterday mccualy had to cover for jp's errors. That said he offers fantastic attacking options with his speed. Left back centre defence and up front I think we are pretty covered - if chevelli comes back then left mid ok too - just think right mid and centre we need cover. Still think nicky butt could give hyam a break and also his experience. Anyone agree?

Great start to the season. The midfield section of Leadbitter, Norris and Hyam is the difference this year. Just got to hope they all stay fit. Priskin and Scotland looked good too, but where does Wickham fit back in? Still not sure I like Peters as a right-back, but I guess time will tell.

A decent performance for me, but well done Keane for continuing to play things down, he really does seem to have learned from last year! Priskin very impressive and improving every game, the shoots of recovery have been there with him from preseason for those with the wit to see it. Scotland looked good, always looking for the space and it's nice to have a presence in the opposition box for the first time in years. Nobody had a bad game and Norris stood out yet again for an unbelievable level of desire and commitment, choice example being second half, went to ground in a 50-50 and then threw his head at the ball on the floor to stop his opponent being able to kick it! Could have had his face kicked off and is their any part of his anatomy he won't put on the line for Ipswich Town!?

I've often said that many of the negative posters are budgies, but if you call someone a budgie on here people just think you're being derisory and leap to defend each other. No, they actually are budgies folks, that's why they're now conspicuous by their absence.

Brilliant start, we need to keep it going after the International Break . . . hopefully with a couple of top notch loan signings too!

I came away from PR really happy yesterday. Not only did we play really well (imo anyway), but we showed desire, commitment and, perhaps most importantly, we actually looked like a team. And we won, keeping a clean sheet into the bargain. Well done everyone, great to see Priskin in particular playing so well.

Wow, if Millen thought Bristol City played well yesterday and we only had a "couple of chances" in the first half, then I am very glad I don't watch them every week. Seriously, what game was he watching?!

From our point of view, another excellent result and things are falling into place very well. Could have had 6 by half time quite easily! Edwards is a class player, him and Townsend on the flanks will be a major threat to the league this year. Very solid at the back indeed, and Scotland and Priskin look like they have potential to work really well together up front. But you only have to look at our bench yesterday and see how much we are lacking in depth...at the moment due to injuries. A loan reinforcement to take the burden off Hyam and another loan striker perhaps is what we need

We've got to be very happy with the way we're playing right now & the results speak for themselves. The team is actually playing as a team, there was no-one that could really be singled out as being rubbish and the level of commitment & belief is the best we've seen for some time. Also, players & staff are adapting tactics mid game and its encouraging to see that we come out stronger tactically, physically & mentally in the second half. Haven't we scored all our goals this season after haf time?

It has been really enjoyable watching the Boys in Blue this month and hopefully we can all play our part in encouraging some of our mates to return again as the team derserve better than 19/20k crowds seen so far at PR. With the next 2 home games being against QPR & Cardiff the team will need all the support we can get and if we play well maybe fans will return.

If anyone else gets the Aug MoM award other than Keano it will be a travesty as we've done it in the league & cup.

SouperJim - I've thought for while too there's some yellow wind up merchants on here & one of the posts on here may well be on the wrong team's site.

For the first time for a while we are starting to put in back to back performances. It didn't always go our way yesterday; the last 10 minutes of the first half really got me worried, but we hung in there, battled for every ball and ultimately got the result we deserved.

RK is right however to play it down. It wasn't a truly classic performance; was I the only one bemoaning the lack of width? But boy did we play like our lives depended on it. Who needs another striker when we have, from nowhere, unearthed another gem, name of Priskin. On that note where did Luke Hyam come from? Never in the frame until this pre-season; already a fixture in his current form.

One of the things that struck me yesterday was that a lot has been made about clearing out the 'deadwood' that RK inherited from JM. Whatever views you may have on this, RK must be thanking his lucky stars that he has David Norris and Gareth McCauley (both acquired by JM) available for selection. Both have been absolute superstars this season and with Grant Leadbitter (an RK acquisition) form the cornerstone of the team.

It's early days but it's great to be an IFTC supporter at the moment.

Congratulations again Ipswich. I wonder how the keane haters will feel if in ratio that keanes time here becomes more sucessful than unsucessful will they still hate him? what if ipswich are surving in the premiereship year in year out will they always hate the man that got us there? an interesting pyschological view point if so!
