Keane Bemoans Lack of Goals
Keane Bemoans Lack of Goals
Saturday, 16th Oct 2010 18:29

Boss Roy Keane bemoaned his side’s lack of goals after losing 2-1 at home to Coventry City. The Blues manager was disappointed with his team’s first half display but felt they improved after the break.

Keane said: “I think we had enough good attacking play, particularly in the second half, but we’ve not been scoring enough goals and that was the case today.

“If you score one at home you think you’ve a chance of at least getting a point. You can talk about possession but we gave two very bad goals away and we gave ourselves a mountain to climb and we weren’t quite able to do it.

“We gave ourselves a chance by getting back into it so quickly with Jason, but the first half was poor and we should do better.”

The Town manager thought his team were well under par before the break: “I was pleased to go in at 1-0 at half-time. We couldn’t have been any worse and we weren’t, but then to give the penalty away.

“The penalty was a bad goal, a really bad goal to give away. When you think of the progress we’re trying to make, just to give away a penalty like that is criminal really.”

Keane feels his side made poor decisions in and around the area: “Possession won’t win you football matches, but we got into good areas in the second half, wide positions on the edge of the box where you need to be inventive.

“I thought we were a bit on our heels today, we were waiting for things to happen rather than making it happen.

“We just need that bit of quality sometimes, someone with that bit of composure when it drops to them to think ‘this is the right decision, this is the right pass’. Today we picked the wrong one too many times.”

Keane says full-back Mark Kennedy is unlikely to play at Watford on Tuesday after suffering another hamstring injury in the closing stages.

Coventry boss Aidy Boothroyd was delighted with his side’s first win at Portman Road since 1994: “It was tough, any game in the Championship is difficult, but coming here is very, very hard because they’re a good side and they’re where they are for a reason. It was a difficult game today.”

The one-time Colchester manager was in little doubt that Lukas Jutkiewicz‘s first half strike crossed the line: “I thought we were the better team in the first half. The ‘goal’ from Lukas is a goal but obviously the referee doesn’t have the benefit of goal-line technology, so it’s my turn again to complain about that and say we should have it. But you have to get on with it and you can’t blame referees.

“The first half we created a lot of chances, I thought we put them under a lot of pressure, but in the second half I thought they came out the better team and, although we hit the post, it was a fight for your life, defend for your life job. You have to do that in the Championship, and we did it really well.”

The problem is that we set our team up like the away side with one up front, and that man up front is only 5'8"/1.73M tall! The first half was embarrassing as an average Coventry side took the game to us. We were not helped with continued awful set piece delivery.

Yes, lack of goals is a problem, we have known that for ages. Scotland has been a good signing, but other than him we still lack fire-power. We know that, so why was our biggest summer signing a goalkeeper and why do we keep bringing in midfielders on loan when we need a striker? We shipped out 4 strikers in the summer (5 if you include Walters) and brought in just 1.

I feel we are a long way from being good enough for promotion and it is depressing, especially with Norwich doing so well.

Spot on jaydee, we looked a different team in the second half, because we attacked!!! I only counted one half chance in the first half. And as Roy said we could have gone in two or three down at the end of the first half.

I like your interviews Mr. Keane but trying to win every game 1-0 what do you expect??? That has never been the Ipswich way and should never be. Unfortunatley for you you've been given in the region of £10m to splash....18 months later and we still lack goals and creativity. Only man responsible for that.

Still, at least we are 6th but wont be much longer with this neagtive football. Look at scum, they fear no one and are flying. Ditto Leicester the previous season.

Keane get a striker too play with Scotland don't usse the overgrown child who has no idea about playing at this level. he can't trap or head the ball and isn't even challenging the defenders for the ball. All I can hope is you're bulling him up like you did Walters to get a good price for him.

Playing one up front at home is ridiculous, all it does is tell the opposition we're not confident of beating them.

This system is one of the best systems I've ever seen be utilised by a football club with the players at its disposal!...... AWAY FROM HOME!

At home Mr Keane we need 2 upfront and the goals will come!

bluechick, please dont tell me your talking about Wickham as "an overgrown kid". I'm not his biggest fan in terms of people saying he is england material however please get a grip, he is a real talent and is gonna be a top championship striker at worst, he will defo play premiership football!

I can see what people are saying. Surely at home we should be looking to attack from the whistle, and with one up front it's hard to do. But let's be honest, we are still doing much better than last season, with a better squad. We'll finish in the top ten for sure which at the beginning of the season would have been acceptable. And if we can finish in the top ten, why can't that be the top six? And for anyone comparing us to Naardge, worry about us,not them. If they are there at the end of the season perhaps we'll have them in the play-offs. Now wouldn't that be a joy...

Remind which idiot played one up front at home?

Playing scotland on his own does'nt help if we are looking to score goals at all. Dissapointing result today. Still in my OP alot of work still needs to be done if we are going to aim for a play-off place. We are not consistent enough with scoring goals and winning games but i guess thats the championship for you. I still feel we need another striker with only scotland looking likely to score at the moment we don't have anyone looking likely at all in that department.

Remember before the start of this season keano said he had a star striker in his office ready to sign!!!! Clegg said no!!! And now we have the same Achilles heel as always.... No red hot striker to get us the goals... I wonder how much his lack of ability to sign players will cost us at the end of the season! We have to change our system at home, but it makes it difficult with so few options up front! Our midfield is decent as is the defence and keeper! Up front... mmmmmmmm! Must do better!

'we're going up we're going up' cried everyone at the start of the season. How may I ask?

> We'll finish in the top ten for sure which at the beginning of the season would have been acceptable.

I do not believe it would. Keane was given a clear target of promotion and this is what his two seasons are all about. We were 9th in 2008/9 and after spending all that money on fees and, especially, we need to show real progress.

> Remember before the start of this season keano said he had a star striker in his office ready to sign.

I believe Keane said "player", not "striker". It was rumoured to be Shaun Derry, the defensive midfielder who in the end moved from Crystal Palace to QPR.

where are all the "we're brilliant we'll be play offs this season" brigade now eh??

I said right from the start of the season where we won a couple of games that this team will NOT be in contention at the end of the season.
We lack creativity, passion and the killer instinct.

We were porr today, we are an average Chuumpionship side. Get used to it folks and grow up.

The one up front approach is never going to bring loads of goals UNLESS the midfield push forward - which they don't. Plus, Wickham isn't 100% fit, Priskin is useless, leaving just Scotland as our only decent fit striker. We need another striker Roy, or I fear we could have a disappointing season.

not a great game and not sure what the one up front is about at home against a pretty mediocre team. For it to work the midfield need to attack at speed and support the striker. Too big a gap between the midfield and scotland. Would like to see a lot more of priskin as i think he is a class act despite last season. Not overly impressed with wickham today. Still a long way to go and we will be top six i am sure. you always get ups and downs in this league anyway as the burley years testify.

agree with you evansblue ....one up front at home doesn't work . Scotland is not the right sort of player for that system and the midfield doesn't support him , so the system fails on all counts .

I totally agree with your comments about Wickham and Priskin , Wickham looked poor and Priskin looked lively , at least he was running into positions pulling defenders with him ....Priskin deserves a run in the team .

I'm a RK fan , but not much point moaning about lack of goals when you only play one up front at home

Hahahaha !!! sorry but I cant actually believe the comments regarding Wickham. It really is pathetic that you are looking to knock the brightest prospect at the club at the first opportunity. Alright he is not in the best of form at the moment and his heading ability is one of the attributes he needs to work on but what you also fail to recognise is that he is not fully fit yet (no pre season due to injury) and he is SEVENTEEN!! years old and how do you expect him to fulfil this potential if he does not get the experience required to adapt his game to this level. As for not being able to trap a ball that's just bulls*** from what I have seen he has one of the best touches and technical ability at the club. (venting over)

When you play 1 upfront you can't expect to score lots of goals. Wake up Keane.

reuser - wickham is a great player and will leave us one day to go on to bigger and better things. Today he did not impress me in the 45 minutes he was on the pitch. Not enough movement or chasing. just an opinion on todays game, nothing more.

I thought it was 2 mediocre teams on the pitch today and the 1 that wanted to win did as simple as that!! we will finish 9th highest i beleive and as for these people saying if we finish 10th we would of took that before the season well i just dont know. If we dont at LEAST finish in playoffs my keane has FAILED his job and we will b saying good bye!! scotland ok priskin useless and wickam too young and it shows how desperate we are playing him if hes not fit.
