Portman Road Closed to Home Fans After Millwall Match
Portman Road Closed to Home Fans After Millwall Match
Thursday, 28th Oct 2010 12:05

Suffolk Constabulary are advising Town supporters that Portman Road will be inaccessible to home fans for a short time after Saturday’s game against Millwall while the away support is escorted out of the ground.

Police say Saturday’s operation, which will involve more than 100 officers, may lead to crowd and traffic congestion and disruption. They advise those not attending the game to avoid town.

Superintendent Ian Sidney, who is overseeing operation, said: “This will be an exciting game for both teams. We hope that people celebrate the match sensibly and in the right spirit.

“We will not tolerate anti-social behaviour, violence, racial chanting, mindless vandalism or any alcohol-fuelled disorder.

“We will continue our use of firm but fair policing to ensure the safety of those attending the game and those members of the public wishing to go about their normal business.”

All these precautions then they'll let all their fans out with ours as they did with leeds and cardiff.

Idiot policing at its finest.

Simple answer is keep the visiting fans in for 15 minutes which is more than enough time for home fans to be away from the ground. they do it with norwich so why not other teams with an active hooligan element

Thats just great , if it isn't hard enough to make the Lowestoft train already at 1702!!!!! Make the Millwall wait inside the ground . Why inconvenience the home support?

Agreed. Keep them in the ground, although knowing these fools they'll leave the game early just to have a ruck with anyone one of us outside regardless!

There will be trouble and there is not much the filth can do I am afraid..

Best to get the Millwall fans away as soon as poss because if we win and they held them back they would just rip out seats and trash the bogs

That just too easy!! Keeping the away fan in there seats for 15min!!
It just so the police will be able to get home 15 mins earlier and have a possible interaction with milwall fans in the process

So the police are expecting trouble, and the club are actively encouraging children to come along to the match dressed in halloween costumes ... hardly seems appropriate! Certainly won't be bringing my daughter to this match!!

That's bollocks !!!! Keep those hooligans inside the ground for 30 minutes after the match and let the Town fans get home.

Who made this decision?? I am going to apply for the chief of Police and sort it out. I will also arrest Keano for crimes against football management !!!

Millwall aren't that bad against us, so what's the f**k**g problem!

Once again, this is the only ground anywhere where the home supporters are treated worse than the away supporters.
Everywhere else, the home fans are favoured and I don't know any other club that would put the home fans out in this way.
Like the other posters here say ~ keep the charming South-Londoners in for 15 mins (and watch them/police them) Pretty obvious really.
It will be interesting to see what happens at the Railway Tavern before and after the game. You know, the usual scenario ~ drunken away fans gather to abuse and threaten passers-by (inc families and young children) whilst plod turn a blind eye/don't get involved/opt for the easy life.

Thugs win again, surely Town supporters should be out first as mugsykets pointed out

Complete over reaction from the police, this may incite trouble when there would not normally be any. I know a few Millwall fans and they dont fall into the stereotype as everybody portrays them. Hooligan activity is organised away from the ground by the firms. This might just create some tit for tat schuffles with straglers who will unfortunately be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Typical - lets look after the Millwall fans and make the Town fans stay put. Honestly!

With a bit of luck the Millwall fans will start fighting each other just like they did in the Carling Cup match.

Acen - a few years ago they came here and trashed he place. I believe we relegated them that day. Ripped seats out the lot.

Wickets - one of the two that were removed was quite well oiled before the game, not sure about the other. They were sitting near a handful of rozzers, so imagine that something was muttered out of place.

Karlosfandangal is spot on. After the last time we held them back here after the game I don't blame the police for trying it this way round.

It's not like they are treating us worse than the away fans, they are just telling fans when they come out of the ground, just find a 1 minute diversion route rather than use Portman Road. God get over it you lot.

As I have connections with the police I can give some insight on their thinking, the reason for this is quite simple, after the Leeds match, somebody in charge of policing nearly got it wrong and did not have enough officers positioned to funnel the Leeds supporters back to their coaches the Leeds supporters just walked through the line & got very close to ours who were leaving the Bobby Robson stand, more by luck than judgement no trouble ensued.
This time they are taking no chances, inconvenient but logical

if it runs like it did against leeds than it will be interesting....few scuffles in the cattle market that day...trouble is,if lads want a tear up..they will do it regardless...i cant be the only one who have noticed in the last couple of years...a youth element following town away to nearer away games...not great in numbers..20+....but always looking out for it...dont think you will ever rid of football violence...

I haven't got a strong view either way on this - however quotes

"They advise those not attending the game to avoid town" and "ensure the safety of those attending the game and those members of the public wishing to go about their normal business"

appear to contradict. If safety is ensured then why should folks avoid town?
