Injured O'Connor Hungry for More First Team Action
Injured O'Connor Hungry for More First Team Action
Wednesday, 29th Dec 2010 13:27

Shane O’Connor says his recent return to first team action has made him hungrier to get over his shoulder injury and get back into the side. O’Connor dislocated and ruptured a shoulder joint in training on Christmas Eve having made his first start since August against Leicester the previous Saturday.

The 20-year-old told the club site: "You just have to keep going. I've had setbacks before. I think I am used to them. Now I think I've got over a hurdle before, proved someone wrong before, and I'll do it again.

"The knocks have toughened me up. I think the setbacks I've had have made me a better player. To get back in the team recently just makes me hungrier to do it again when I'm fit."

The injury is expected to keep the Irishman out of action for around six weeks.

Shane has been really unfortunate to pick up this injury just when he was getting into the first team (his exclusion for months was a real mystery, as was the attempt to loan him out recently). Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Such a shame. Thought he was excellent against Leicester and better than the on-loan Townsend. Was feeling optimistic and then he gets injured! Roy must feel the world is against him!!!

"roy must feel world is against him" ye cos shane was the 1st name on team sheet all season lol he only played o connor against leicester cos he had no1 else to play, the fact that he played so well shows that he should have been playing all season cos lets face it he was 1 of very few plusses to come out of last season. When this season is done and dusted what positives will we be able to take? oh ye the fact that we can play good football....... on 3 inches of snow! keane out or we could end up in league 1

waters2908 - point is this. O'Conner comes in and I am sure you will agree does an outstanding job? Townsend then goes back to Spurs. We look forward to O'Conner continuing in the side, Roy says he is going to start and then low and behold he gets injured for 6 weeks. Obviously you are a Roy hater - and that's your opinion - but alas surely you can see this is bad luck for both Roy and O'Conner? Surely???

Also we WON 3-0 on 3 inches of snow - surely some credit rather than finding a negative????

I agree the timing of this is unfortunate for the manager, but overall I feel our injury levels have been about average so I cannot see why injuries are used as an excuse so much for poor performances and results, including recent quotes from the manager about being "desparate" for new players. Yes, McAuley is out for a while but other than that most players are fit.

O'Connor did very well against Leicester, but it was not a surprise he did as he also impressed in most matches he played last season and in pre-season. So why did Keane keep him out of the side for five months?

Mark - O'Conner had a spell of injuries earlier this season. Agree he should have been recalled sooner though and would have much preferred to see him play instead of a loanee i.e. Townsend. I still believe that when he did get his chance it was very unfortunate for both the player and Roy to pick up an injury.

I don't think anyone is suggesting injuries are an excuse for poor performances, but one has to feel sorry for O'Conner (and also the manager) - particularly when a player does well and then gets injured! It's sheer bad luck - whichever way you look at it!

He played well against Leicester so he wouldn't have started in the next game anyway!!!

Alfromcol - I think that sums it up nicely. He was best player vs Leicester and still got subbed off. And based on previous games, the man of the match (regularly priskin or Townsend) get subbed off and then didnt get to start the next game, so keane probably wouldn't have played him if he had been fit.

All clubs get injuries but the only key player for us is Macauley which isn't too bad in the luck department. I know keane likes to spin stories (bad luck, too many youngsters etc) but it's just to detract from the fact that he's doing a very poor job. Unfortunately some gullible people (Evans included) seem to fall for it.

Very frustrating for him, he looked very promising in recent games.

Agree completely with you stinkius. O'Connor should have been a regular in the side. Unfortunately a good performance in a match does not increase your chance of playing in the next game. Take Jamie Peters, has had many very good performances this year to be constantly dropped, unlike Leadbitter who has not but is first on the team sheet.
I think Roy may place a higher importance on someone in training rather than in matches??? Who knows what goes on in his head.
Can't see Keane being kicked out now before the end of his contract as the very poor performances, runs of defeats, dropping attenances and general lack of progress over the 20 months he has been here have not persuaded Evans to do anything so far, so can only assume that he will see his 2 years out. Can only hope that Town will still be in Championship rather than League 1!
