Jewell: Wins The Priority Then Style Wednesday, 19th Jan 2011 09:15
Boss Paul Jewell says his Town side need to start winning games before looking to play football in the traditional 'Ipswich way'. The Blues have won only one of their last 10 league games.
Jewell, making reference to Cesc Fabregas’s rugby comments after Wednesday’s Carling Cup win against Arsenal, says that initially he is after victories before looking to instil Town’s traditional passing game in his team: “Fabregas doesn’t think we play the 'Ipswich way'! The most important thing is winning matches, I’ve got to be honest.
“We all want to play the game the right way, but you’ve got to earn that right. I think it’s a bit of a fallacy when fans say ‘I’d rather lose the game 4-3 and play the right way’. They wouldn’t.
“They would rather win the game and as you win more games you get more and more confident and your players think ‘Where’s that come from?’.
“It’ll take time. We know we’re three points off the relegation places. We’re in battle. We’ve got to battle first, make no mistake about it.
“And after the battle, you’ve heard it before, you’ve got to win a battle to win a match. When we get in the right areas, we want to get the ball wide, want to get crosses in, but that takes time.”
Jewell agrees with his predecessor Roy Keane that Town are currently making too many poor decisions: “I think in and around both boxes. You can tell we’re a little bit edgy at times, we’re a little bit edgy when we’re clearing the ball and you get a feeling of nervousness when there shouldn’t be any.
“That’s football, that happens. We’ve just got to get rid of that and be strong, mentally and physically and try and move on.”
Meanwhile, striker Kevin Lisbie is yet to hear from Jewell regarding him being recalled to Portman Road from loan club Millwall. Like Lee Martin, who was summoned from Charlton yesterday, Town have a 24-hour recall on Lisbie. Pablo Couñago’s spell at Crystal Palace can only be curtailed if the player, Palace and Town all agree to do so.
Lisbie said: “I haven’t heard anything at the moment, and I’m not exactly waiting by my phone.
“But if Ipswich were to call me back, then it would presumably be to go straight back into the team. If something happens, then it happens, and I would see out my final few months at Ipswich.
“I have nothing against the club, and I know that they could call me back at any time this month. There’s a new manager in place and there’s 12 days left for them to come in for me.”

As for the Armchair fan comments, I became one because i was not going to pay for the sh.t that was being served up by RK, anything that Paul Jewell does is going to be better than that cr.p! Once normality returns to Portman Road after nearly 20 months of madness then things will naturally improve anyway (football quality) and hopefully the results will follow! I just really cannot believe there are still people trying to give Roy Keane credit? it really puzzles me to say the least, all he done was waste millions, decimate our squad (leaving it severely unbalanced), destroyed morale, sacked staff unneccassarily (Brian Klugg etc), destroyed the football style and quality, alienated most of the squad (some are leaving),wrecked supporters morale, probably cost Evans millions in potential bosman frees with no replacements and left us in a relegation battle!

lunatic38 and by all accounts upset many backroom staff too....... the club was not a happy place with Keane around. I stuck up for him at first, everyone needs a chance but the last few months going down to watch town has seemed a chore, thats the first time ever i have said that.

Whatever it takes to stay up lets do and then sort it out from next season. Goals win games which in itself is entertaining and something we havent been doing and lets move on from there. As for people not going because of the standard of football, well im not going to knock them because from the last season under Jim i was asking myself what the hell i was doing going every week watching this meaningless rubbish. Improve the football then supporters will come back and so will the atmosphere. Its very difficult to cheer about something thats mundane, standing by yourself.

Marc - i remeber reading somewhere that the club made a number of calls directly to nugent after he had come to have a look, but he didnt pick up his mobile and we were left not knowing where we stood. I think SuperJim was quite miffed by it all, if my memory serves me correctly...

Not related to this string but Harry Redknapp is expected to send winger Andros Townsend away on-loan this month. The youngster is only back at White Hart Lane from Ipswich Town and scored in Spurs' FA Cup victory over Charlton Athletic. The People says Watford and QPR are keen to take on Townsend to the end of the season."" Slipped through our fingers thanks to RK

Spot on PJ. A team cannot start pushing a ball around at the drop of a hat. A virus of "confidence and belief" needs to spread through the team first.

I just noticed that Birmingham are willing to let Kevin Phillips go, he would be a great signing and would score plenty of goals at championship level, he also has plenty of experience, go and get him Jewell.

Wallis - Phillips is injury prone nowa days

katemoss - give the man a chance, you can't expect any manager to say anything different in our position, unless you want RK back of course ? we have to win games by any means - pretty or not passing or long ball, as long as we are winning

trueblue Katemoss is the kind of person that will find something to moan about whatever the team is doing and whoever is in charge, you know the sort.....

Why do people still want Phillips? He was a great player in his day, but he's an old man now. Forget him. Why don't we sign teddy Sherringham or Ole Gunnar Solsjaer. Should've signed Phillips all those years ago when Sheepshanks wouldn't sign the cheque for Burley. Better to get some service to Scotland & Priskin. Even the ageing Scotland is a young man by comparison.

First and foremost we don't want Lisbie back.He has spouted his mouth off far too often for me and I guess the one thing we can all agree on is Roy was right to get shot of him! I don't think Jewell will want him back! I also agree that results are the primary focus - BUT ultimately I hope Jewell concentrates on style. Keeping our Championship status 'no matter what' if the priority though. There seems to be contrasting reports re the style of football Jewell plays ... by all accounts he played some decent stuff at Wigan, but hoof ball at Derby/Bradford/Sheffield ... I don't recall - does anyone else remember?? Seem to recall the football at Derby was pretty poor??
