Jewell Delighted But Not Keen on Comebacks Every Week
Jewell Delighted But Not Keen on Comebacks Every Week
Tuesday, 1st Feb 2011 22:40

Town boss Paul Jewell was delighted to make a winning return to Derby County but says he would prefer his side not to have to come from behind every week.

Having come from a goal down against Doncaster to gain Jewell his first home win, the Blues turned things around against their boss’s former club Derby to grab his inaugural away Town victory.

The new Blues boss said: “I’d prefer us not to, but obviously it shows a bit of character. It feels strange being sat up here [in the Pride Park media centre] after winning a game!

“I said to the players just now that we’ve won the game but there is so much more that we can do better. There are the little shoots of progress but we don’t want to get carried away. We’ve shown character to come back from conceding the early goal.”

Jewell was pleased to see two of his midfielders on the scoresheet having asked for more goals from that area of the side: “Now we need the strikers to join in!

“It was a good strike from Jimmy, he gives us something different, he wants to get on the ball all the time, he’s enthusiastic and he can play, so he gives us a different dimension.

“David Norris kept going, we asked him to make those runs to join the front player and the goal was a good goal. I was pleased to see it go in.”

The win was the Blues third in a row at Pride Park and their fourth away from home in the league this season.

Despite the Rams’ current poor form, Jewell says Pride Park is a difficult place to visit: “I know Derby aren’t on a great run at the moment, but they haven’t got a bad home record and it’s not an easy place to come.

“We tried to get at them early on and I think we did, but they scored and counter-attacked us quite well.

“But we stuck in there and just had that little bit of luck that you need and have hung on. I don’t really want us to be hanging on, but that’s the way we are at the moment. However, winning games will breed confidence.

“I thought we should have killed the game off at times but we gave the ball away and made errors, but that will go the more we win games.”

Derby boss Nigel Clough says Jimmy Bullard’s goal completely altered the course of the match: “We made a brilliant start. I thought we started both halves extremely well and at 1-0 were looking relatively comfortable, then all of a sudden one from 30 yards goes in and changes the game totally, it was the turning point in the game.

“Stephen Bywater has come straight in at half-time and held his hand up, he should have dealt with it better. One very small mistake and we’re 1-1 and chasing the game again, which we didn’t deserve to be.”

The second goal came as a similar blow when Clough’s side were again on top: “We came out in the second half and for 20-odd minutes played very well.

“I think it was their first serious attack [that David Norris scored]. They’ve had three shots in the game and have scored two of them, it seems to be the way it’s going at the moment.”

It feels like the RK black cloud has been lifted in only a few weeks. Town are now obviously motivated and organised to recover from an early home goal setback. Sorry RK but you were never able to achieve this. Feeling good about us now. Play-offs anyone? I'd settle for mid-table this season and a scum thumping in April!

Turned 40 today. Woke up to read the words "goal" and "30 yard volley" in the same sentence about ITFC, probably for the first time since 1982. Thanks, Jimmy, for the best birthday present ever!

The black cloud of negativity has lifted.. Now all we have to do is win our 2 games in hand and we will only be 6 points off the Play Offs it is doable

Was sat with home fans what a nightmare!! Still jumped up when bullards goal went in! Passed the ball, no more hoofing! Ok gave it away cheaply at times but promising signs. Players, fullop good solid game, kennedy solid, mccauley good in air but so slow, delaney bit of hoofball now and then but solid, edwards awol most of first half but great second half, wickham very quiet, norris outstanding, leadbitter shocking gave ball away too easily, martin fast creative and strong a differant player, prisken head is down totally lacking confidence well done mr keane! All in all a good team effort and a great night out, sore head now!!!

Nigel Clough sounds like Keaneo did a few months ago.... a man on his way out!

Well done Town, Jewell obviously has his finger on the pulse and I'm sure the confidence will start to improve, as will the performances, mid table this season and maybe a shot at the play offs next??!!

When was the last time we smashed in a goal from 30 yards? (forget the snow fiasco against Leicester!!)
Well done team, and great goal Bullard. Lets see a real attempt now to wrap up the contracts of Norris and Big Mac, if they both want to stay lets give them a reason....

Until JP arrived there seemed to be this obsession with keeping it tight at the back and not giving anything away which led to the lads developing a fear of not keeping a clean sheet all the time - and all the passion went from their game.

But like PJ keeps telling us, Jimmy really does offer us something different, he's prepared to shoot from range instead of the old belief that you have to scramble around in the box to score.

Like keaneish, I "Love the way Jimmy Bullard does in 30 minutes in a town shirt what Grant Leadbitter has been trying to do for 2 years in a town shirt...score from long range!"

PJ highlights the "character" that is shown in coming from behind, and he's spot on. We've witnessed such limp performances lately and it's this character that will eventually turn things round for us.

And when "the strikers join in too" we'll all have smiles on our faces and not just the players.

Amazing what an injury prone has been can do isnt Casanovacrow ?
Bullard lifted the whole side with his enthusiam and character and looked a class above anyone else on the pitch with his time and passing ,exactley what we have needed for two seasons . Desperately in need of a right back and Wickham needs to start up front

Blueulster- I was there, Martin played really well, alternating between left and right wing frequently, ran at defenders and worked reall hard. End product still missing though, but definitely positive signs. Edwards however, had a shocker, caught missing at RB on several occasions in the first half (leading to their goal) and offered very little going forwards.

Overall the standard of football was not great by either side, but our recovery has to start with wins (the manner in which they are gained is less important----for now!)

This is my first post for a while in the PJ era, and I now look forward to match days. It all makes so much more sense and it's like a breath of fresh air. Come on Jas0999, you must admit that this shows just how bad your beloved Keane was?!!

Great result and a much needed three points but yet again we gave away a silly goal in the first place.

Blueulster - Martin was better (than before he was frozen out) His workrate was good, he looked sharp and very up for it.. still a little lightweight but not afraid to get stuck in.

Was an amazing feeling at half time to actually have the feeling that 'you know what.. I think we might win this'... The black cloud has well and truely been lifted!

Ps.. I think Paul Jewell recognised the streaker from one of his vids! COYB

Good result and much needed but its still operation ' lets not get relegated' although i really dont think that will happen. However we need to beat all those clubs below us and, with the exception of Bristol, are all at home. A mid table finish would suit us fine enabling PJ to properly assess the players including those on the team periphery and then move on next season.

Result was all important and I reckon we wouldn't have won that game under Keane, having a new manager and a few new signings makes a difference and gives the club a new buzz. I'd like to see our boys control the games a bit more and have a bit more possession but it's a start under PJ that we've won 2 out of 3!

i love coming from behind and would willingly do it every day but theres no harm in shooting a bit more from the front i am really rooting for the team now. ...keane would have played 6 defensive midfielders and try to snatch draw and lost 1-0 and then blamed the away supporters and the linesmans socks........blueskysss nothing but blueskyyyyyssssss

Well done, but two goals form three shots shows we still have an uphill struggle to stay in this division.

Seems the players are now loving their football again and from what i can gather the players were all smiling and high fiving at the end.

I'm chuffed to bits at what PJ has already managed to do and achieve. He wasn't my first choice but i wouldn't swap him for anyone now !

Anyone who thinks Leadbitter is not worth a place in the team was either not at Derby last night or is somewhat lacking in knowledge of the game of football.

must be the later for me as i was at the game and didnt rate him, gave the ball away far too cheaply for my liking. Did make a couple of quality passes and think there is a great player in there but for me too many mistakes....

Those who said changing Keano was bad timing, must now realise that we could possibly squeeze into the play offs. WELL DONE AND THANK YOU MARCUS!!!!!!!

I'm with the Bluelady i too dont believe Leadbitter should keep his place if we play 4-4-2 and in a five midfield Hyam is better defensively ,so until Leadbitter finds any kind of form for the reason we paid so much for him and stops giving the ball away so much ,i think he may miss out in the centre to Bullard and Norris if we sign a right back and push Edwards forward again allowing Martin to go on the other wing or Drury coming in ,cant see Bullard or Norris being dropped to soon in the future due their infectuos energy alone
