Jewell: Draw Felt Like a Defeat
Jewell: Draw Felt Like a Defeat
Saturday, 12th Feb 2011 17:46

Boss Paul Jewell admitted that the Blues’ 1-1 draw at Barnsley felt like a defeat with the Tykes grabbing a late equaliser through Jacob Mellis after Jason Scotland had put Town in front.

Jewell said: “It feels like a defeat when you concede a goal so late and in the manner that it was conceded, with a deflection. It’s difficult to come out and be positive because you feel so sick.

“It wasn’t a great game in the first half, the pitch wasn’t conducive to getting the ball down and passing. It was always going to be a game where mistakes were going to be punished.

“I thought we had a few chances second half on the break and we defended really well, got great blocks in, Márton made a couple of saves and just when you think you’ve got three points, that happens. But that’s football.”

The Town manager was pleased to see striker Scotland making the headlines for scoring rather than because of his proposed loan move back to Swansea, on which front Jewell says there has been no further progress: “There’s nothing going on there as far as I’m concerned. They came back with an offer which wasn’t good enough and I’m quite happy to keep Jason here.”

Skipper David Norris was replaced after 15 minutes after suffering an injury and Jewell says the extent of the midfielder’s knock should be known on Sunday: “He’s twisted both his ankle and his knee, which is a bit of a blow, but these things happen in football and we’ll have to assess him in the morning.”

Tykes manager Mark Robins felt his team were under par: "it was lacklustre today and Ipswich came for a point and made it difficult for us.

"We had plenty of chances, more than Ipswich did, but I couldn't see either team scoring. We stood off them too much and looked like we hadn't played with each other for a while. The positive is we came back from a goal down and ground out a result.

"We got a decent goal at the end of it. I thought Jacob's shot was going to break the back of the net, he hit it that well.

"The pitch was very difficult and beat both teams. Too many of our players had quiet afternoons. I ended up throwing Jason Shackell forward and caused havoc and won some headers and thankfully Jacob has stuck it in the back of the net at the end.

"I think it would have been harsh on us to lose the game. They have broken away against us, had a decent shot, we didn't close him down well enough and the rebound goes into the empty net. It was disappointing, very disappointing, but we stuck at it and got an equaliser."

Sounds like Norris may be out for a while. Looking forward to seeing us exploit the loan window. There has been talk of signings, so hopefully something will happen this week. Although Healy has done a lot better this season, I still don't think he is the answer if Norris is out for a while.

Agree with Jewell's comments. It does feel like a defeat. These kind of mistakes have to be cut out. A reminder that Jewell has a tough job on his hands. Still on to the next game - which is very winnable.

Felt like a defeat for me too, especially turning on Soccer Saturday and seeing the scum grabbing a late winner. Bollox.

Deflated, but.... Keep calm and carry on, Donny on a very bad run of form, let's take advantage!

What a double-blow today for Barnsley and Norwich to both score in injury time! It was looking such a good afternoon up to then. A 1-1 draw at Barnsley is hardly a disaster though, so we'll just have to talk about our unbeaten run rather than our winning run!

For all his limitations, Scotland is a goal scorer and his first on the road this season may make us reluctant to loan him to Swansea. If he is played in Jewell's team he would probably score more than in Keane's defensive line ups.

We'll have to wait on Norris. Healy has done well since Keane left, although I too am not sure he is the answer if Norris is out for weeks. Presumably Drury would come into that role, after all he is Jewell's first permanent signing and I hope he is able to make the step up to the Championship; playing him is the only way to find out.

I would of settled for a point before the game. This would of been a game we would of lost a few weeks ago so not too disappointed overall. Four games unbeaten isn't too shabby.

I simply cannot come out with the 'still unbeaten', '10 points out of 12' stuff today. This isn't a 'negative' comment but we have dropped a place down the table today becuase of poor concentration in stoppage time. But it isn't the first time, far from it. I happened in unthinkable amounts of games last year and it has to stop! From what I hear Martin should have held on to the ball instead of shooting, and we would have won the game. No blame but just inexperience that needs putting a stop to - just like connor needs teaching what to do with the ball at certain times instead of an absurd back-heel. This is one job Paul Jewell has on his hands, to stop us conceeding stupid goals in the last seconds of games. It is a defeat in my eyes today. Im fed up of it. But hey ho, on to Donny on tuesday, confident of a win as I was today, we'll see. COYB.

This may just be me being nervous but the last time we won three in a row, 08-09 right at the end when keane took over, we went on that horrid run of draws. Hope this isnt the same thing.

If we can tighten up and prevent those sickening late goals against us and also find out Norwich's secret for scoring late winners, then we really will be going in the right direction I feel, perhaps the answer is to attack even more strongly towards the end of the game and not effectively draw the opposition towards us at that crucial period.

I know overall a draw isn't too bad, but leading 1-0 with 2 minutes or so of injury time played and then conceding to lose 2 points was devastating. Then Norwich go and get a winner in the 4th minute of injury time. Oh man! Gutted. Someone say something to cheer me up!

well its an improvement from a month or so ago when they beat us 1-3 at PR and some of our fans cheered thetheir passes , so we have come a decent way already under the jewell.

None of this would've happened if we signed Utaka or El-Hadj Diouf!

bit gutted with conseding in the last minute again but that happens. But saying that i would have took a point at the start of the game, 10 out of 12 is pretty good form, hopefully looking at get a win at Doncaster and get back on track. Also hope Norris isnt out for long :/

Yer I'd accept that fact Worrier if Barnsley had scored say a minute or two after us but with the last kick of the game it's horrific. Would you have taken a point if someone had offered you it just after Scotland scored his goal? I rest my case.

It's February and not necessarily a time for subtle interplay. Mr Bullen is going to find things difficult? How to make an advantage of offside play? Things are going in the right direction. Very interesting Mr Jewell's musings on "scruffy goals" Putting pressure on, numbers in the box and forcing in a la Nat Lofthouse.

Of course it feels like a defeat. But taking the long view, 10 points out of 12 - Wow!! I can live with that. I'm pretty sure that's 10 more than we would have got under the previous management. Onwards and upwards.

I'm sure Jason enjoyed his pre match pie and once he ran it off he linked up well with Martin to score his first away goal for town. at the end of the day a draw is a fair result, we'll take the three points next season in our promotion push.

Just back from what was an entertaining game and it was there for the taking but as I posted on here yesterday its not an easy place to go and a point would not be the worst result. Although it does feel like it now. I also pointed out our tendency for stoppage time goals there. Thats three of the five games there since they came up. The last two were winners but I still felt as deflated driving back.
Still I predict three point on Tuesday night.

Just seen the goals, and I've just seen the best and worst of Lee Martin. Oh deary deary me, great work for our goal, could fault him for not hitting low but gets an assist and scotland gets a tidy goal. For they're goal he's let the ball bounce when he needs to get it down as soon as possible and put it in to row z, then the block is pretty poor (not sure who). The awful defending has made me even angrier at conceeding a 94th minute equalizer!
