Jewell: Pompey Boss Shouldn't Have Talked About Norris
Jewell: Pompey Boss Shouldn't Have Talked About Norris
Friday, 25th Feb 2011 09:22

Boss Paul Jewell says his Portsmouth counterpart Steve Cotterill shouldn't have spoken publicly about his interest in Town skipper David Norris during the transfer window. Cotterill, whose club is understood to have had a £250,000 offer rebuffed by the Blues, made a very public play for Norris, even claiming that he knew the 30-year-old wanted to move to Pompey.

Norris, who is out of contract in the summer, subsequently stated that he wants to stay at Town and Jewell says bosses shouldn’t talk about other clubs’ players in that manner: “The Portsmouth manager seems to have a lot to say about our players.

“Chuck will get his wish if Steve Cotterill’s to be believed because one of the two clubs he’s desperate to play for is going to be here on Saturday. I don’t know which one that is, but he hasn’t intimated to me that he’s going to leave. He’s happy to stay, I’m happy to keep him. What will be, will be.

“I don’t think it’s right for me to comment on other teams' players and vice versa, I don’t think it’s right for managers to comment on mine, but I can’t help that.”

Norris could be back from his ankle injury to face Pompey on Saturday with Jewell reporting no new injuries, aside from Colin Healy’s torn stomach muscle: “There are one or two bumps and bruises from the other night but nothing to worry about.”

Let's hope that Harry Hill is not sat between the dug-outs on Saturday doing his 'fight fight fight' skit. The club could always put a piano behind the oppo dug-out.

double standards - PJ talks about players he wants - all managers do.

Norris is / was free to talk to anyone after 1st January, if there is anyone to blame it is 'da management' who have faffed around for months over offering him 3 years rather than a 2 year contract

Give him a three year contract, surely that has to be a reasonable punt. I think his work rate has definately been missed in the last couple of games, possibly the outcomes may also have been different.

out of the 3 senoir players, whos contracts are up at the end of the season. Norris is the most important imo. i would offer him the 3 years and try and get delaney and mac on shorter deals

Have to say its a good time to get rid of players that you dont want and re build for the future.
Just let the contract run out instead of trying to sell them (Counago, Lisbie etc)
Not saying we should let Norris Delaney or McAuley go, still think Jewell is edging his bets and is out there looking for better.
Drury and Bullard in with a Norris on the way out, who knows, but all very intresting and time will tell
Excited about football again and really cant wait for the summer to see all the comings and goings

Not buying that Norris is the most important of the three, I think I'd rather keep both defenders over him to be honest. Don't get me wrong I hope he stays but I wouldnt keep him ahead of the other two.

Garv; What would be so wrong in keeping all three ? You have to admit, all three have done their bit for us this season.

We should keep all three, but a special effort to keep Norris. 3 years is no big deal for a 30 yr old. Norris is now proving that with freedom to go forward, he can score goals from midfield. He gets in where the boots are flying - just what PJ was saying he needed. We may just have beaten Barnsley & Hull & got a result at QPR with him poaching

If there are two games we must win this season they are Norwich and tomorrow. Portsmouth Football Club are a joke and have been for a couple of years now and it amazes me how they have wealed and dealed their way out of financial chaos. The club really stinks as was portrayed on the Sky Special Report this week. They can't afford to pay Hughes and Brown and yet pay Kitson and Lawrence massive salaries. Cotterell continually whinges about the squad he has - I tell you what most of the division would want his squad as they all have premiership experience. Cotterell is just covering his backside to cover up his failings in the league as they should be a top six Club with the players he has at his disposal. I hope we do give the man some strick tomorrow over the Norris affair as his behaviour was disreputable. Can't believe Norris would really want to go that pits of a place anyway (City and seafront excluded).

I agree with Jewell, there's a big difference between talking about players generally and the "I think the player wants to come here"-type banter Cotterill was doing about Norris.
