Evans: There Will Be Money to Spend
Evans: There Will Be Money to Spend
Saturday, 30th Apr 2011 09:07

Town owner and chairman Marcus Evans has confirmed that boss Paul Jewell will be given money to spend in the summer. Evans has already held meetings with Jewell and chief executive Simon Clegg to discuss the club’s summer plans and the budget available to the Blues boss.

Speaking in an interview in today’s programme, Evans said: “We will definitely be investing in the playing squad in the summer. Simon and myself have already had several meetings and Paul is aware of what we are looking at financially.

“I’m not going to say how much I intend to invest in the summer. However, I do intend to ensure the necessary resources are available to put together a competitive squad for next season.

“Inevitably there will be players leaving as well. That’s the nature of football. But Paul has his targets. He has a list of players he wants to bring in and we are working on making that happen now, we have been for a while.

“As I’m sure Town fans are aware, we have contract offers out to a number of players and discussions are ongoing with some players.

“Those negotiations will influence the players and positions we target. That will be down to the manager but we will be adding to the squad regardless.”

Evans says he’s pleased that Jewell quickly saw Town into mid-table after replacing Roy Keane in January: “Obviously I’m delighted that Paul has come in and more than steadied the ship.

“His brief was simple when we made him manager of Ipswich Town. Keep us up. He has achieved that with plenty to spare.

“I’ve seen some headlines and comment saying if we had made the change earlier we may have made those play-offs, but I wanted to give Roy as long as possible to get the team back on course.”

Go & spend it wisely Mr Jewell. I have far more faith in your ability to secure some talent than your predecessor, then, when you have put your team together, use your obvious management skills to push the club forward.

I believe we need massive clear out and get our 1st team squad down to Twenty really good players so we have like for like replacement in every position. We dont want the situation ever again when playing centre halfs at full back and central midfielders out wide. Get rid of Scotland, Norris, Odear, Priskin, Eastman,Smith, Delaney and Leadbitter. And bring in Mackail-Smith, Nicky Maynard, Bullard, Andros Townsend, and a big commanding centre half and lets play Oconnor at left back.

Comments about roy shows that he is a good chairman, but still has a bit to learn about contracts.

If Porno Paul is given around £6 mil that would be a good starting block. The most important thing is the quality of players so what ever it costs we have to bring them to town. I believe the next 2 yrs are massive we can't carry on as we have or it does make you wonder how long evans will be here for but fingers crossed next season we can have a bit of success. Lets hope cardiff can win today and scum choke.

Clegg has made sure any money avalilble for players will have to be spent on replacing those lost on free's, and not on improving the squad.

Personlly i think mr evans has been great for itfc. There are peaple who run the guy down.Dont forget his saved us finacially and has allowed his managers money to spend. Ok his made mistakes but his new to this side of the industry. Its always easy for peaple to find faults with what peaple are doing. He chooces to keep a low profile and we have to respect that. Its also easy to say we should spend money on this and that player but please remember its not an ever ending cheque book and i do hope mr evens gets what he wants and gets itfc into the premiership. On a personal side id like to thank you for what youve done at ipswich

Yes there will be money.
However Roy was unable to bring players here who wanted to come and PJ could not attract Austin.
The question is ( And I accept it is Evans's money) is the money enough to bring players that will give us promotion here,or players that will keep us mid table?
The difference in financial terms is great.

Tbh I as much as I want us to be signing players like billy sharp, kane Ferdinand and most of the others we've been linked with, why would they join us? I mean would you like to join a bottom half of the table team when they've got offers from teams in and around the play offs. for example if you were billy sharp and you could join Ipswich or Swansea, qpr, Cardiff, nott forrest even Norwich, who would join?

Evans is doing his bit by putting in the money, Jewell is doing his bit by managing the team well and bringing in results on the field, but Clegg is my worry in all this. He comes across badly when he speaks, he has not got deals done in the past for whatever reason, he gets it wrong with ticket prices time and time again (today is a grade A game, cheapest tickests £30.50!!!), he has said things that Jewell has had to contradict (ransom comments), and his communication with fans is poor (the latest example being the high-noon season ticket deadline), and worst of all he let key players contracts expire which could now cost us McAuley and Norris.

I like Marcus Evans and I am sure that more of you will feel the same, eventually.

Patching and mending, as we have done for so long, doesn't always work and will cost more in the long run. Evans could actually save money long term if he spends big this summer and gives Paul Jewel (a proper football manager, thank God) the resources he needs to get us into the Premiership. I thank Marcus for what he's done so far and hope he really goes for it now he has a decent manager with a proven track record.

Needs to spend at least 10 million to replace leavers and for improvements !

bedsitfc added 12:56 - Apr 30
Meekreech - you have a very high opinion of mac and norris i would say they are worth about £2 million between them i think a total of £5million would see our team improve big time.

I have to agree with meekreech to a degree, not because of what Norris and mac are worth but due to the outrageously inflated transfer Market prices in general. It will cost that if we want the quality to get us up next season.

I think Ipswich24 has it about right
But I DO like Smith.
The manager needs to lose 2 stone in weight. Come on Paul you can do that.
I also think we should have an Investor and One Manager, looking after negotiations and football. Old fashioned? I think the investor should now know enough about football to start to trust.

However much PJ is given,he won't spend it as badly as Keanotheclown did.

I want leadbitter, priskin, scotland, norris, wouldn't mind kennedy, Eastmen. They should all go in the summer there useless especially leadbitter who's a shadow of a player that he used to be, they should evaparate from the club. Aand for the love of god put Shane O'conner in defence he's done nothing wrong. Also good see old Jaime Peters back in the game gotta love Jaime!

Mr Clegg needs to move on.
What can he do that Mr Jewell cannot?

Much will depend upon how much we get for Wickham - but we will need to replace Wickham, Norris, Bullard and McAuley - as well as sign wing-backs, a midfielder and another striker. I hope ME has put several million aside.
