McAuley Reported to Have Agreed Terms With Rangers
McAuley Reported to Have Agreed Terms With Rangers
Saturday, 30th Apr 2011 09:14

SPL giants Rangers have agreed a deal with out-of-contract Town defender Gareth McAuley, according to a tabloid report this morning. The Glasgow club have been linked with the Northern Irishman for a number of weeks.

Town have agreed new terms with McAuley’s agent but the former Leicester and Lincoln man has not put pen to paper on his new Portman Road deal.

West Brom are also said to have been chasing the former Blues skipper with Baggies manager Roy Hodgson at the recent Town-Norwich derby.

McAuley misses today's game against Preston with a groin muscle tear and may well have played his last game for the Blues.

In January, Town boss Paul Jewell targeted Preston's Sean St Ledger and with the Lilywhites relegated, the Irish international may well be on Jewell's summer wish-list. The 26-year-old is currently out of action with a knee injury.

This has gone on long enough. Let him go & start afresh. St Ledger would be a good replacement.

Does anyone actually believe the Daily Mail?

I'm perhaps not as bothered as some others, if he doesn't sign. Despite his occasional heroics, in terms last minute tackles. He's slow and like his partner, prone to big errors - he's been appalling in some of the last few matches - IE Norwich and Middlesbrough come to mind.

If G Mac was that desperate to sign for us, he would more than likely have done so by now.

He's been awesome this year, and i voted for him as player of the year, and how people can say otherwise is beyond me. Sure recent performances havent been his best but his leadership and abilities have helped us massively. Deffiently a prem player and i guess it was only a matter of time . . . . . . .

To gareths favour he should obtain the best deal he can for him and his family.
From what we hear he has not been in a rush to sign for us, we were his fall back if nothing better came along. Bye Bye.

Said it before

The last 2 seasons at the back we have leeked over 70 goals and he was in the Leicester side that got relegated the season before and they leeked over 80 goals that season and we are still a mid table side.

Why sign him for 3 years and pay him between 10-20k a week, that will cost the club 1.5 -3 million for an average player,

New central Defender and Tommy Smith for Delaney.

He's too slow, we've been shown up all season by quick nippy strikers. A solid centre back superb in the air but clearly doesn't want to be with town dispite his claims of wanting to stay. Having offered the deal he asked for nearly a month ago we must now draw a line under this one and get someone in that wants to be here. Thanks Gareth you've done OK but goodbye.

Trouble is we'll end up spending the budget on replacements rather than adding to the squad ie standing still. A player worth £2/£3m is going for nothing. Shocking negligence on clegg's part

Good Riddance to him! Do we honestly want players who are still considering whether they want to sign or not!!! We want commitment for next season!

If he goes to a prem club I wouldn't be too disheartened, as at 31/32(?) it would most likely be his last chance, but going to the SPL would just be for money in my opinion and a bit of status and I'd feel a bit aggrieved to be honest. As another comment states, the SPL is a bit of a mickey mouse league and I think a long way behind our league apart from the two obvious teams. A bit of failure in Europe and some extra wonga that he doesn't need, is that really enough reason for leaving town? So much for "wanting to stay", same goes for Norris (although I'd be happy if he did leave). Then again this story could be just more tabloid rubbish, let's hope so.

Karlosfandangal - he was in the Leicester side that went down with the best defence outside the top 6!

Replace with St Ledger - we only want people who are commited to the club

Good luck Gareth and enjoy challenging for trophies. I'd expect he is a direct replacement for Weir.

Karlosfandangal - McAuley was part of the Leicester defence that was the best outside the top 6 and they were still relegated!

St Ledger to replace him

Good luck to Gareth challenging for trophies and a straight replacement for Weir who is now 41!
