Town Should Look to Emulate Norwich
Town Should Look to Emulate Norwich
Saturday, 7th May 2011 08:49

Boss Paul Jewell says Town have got to take Norwich City’s promotion to the Premier League on the chin and look to emulate them next season.

Jewell said: “Let’s be honest about it, I think Norwich have been terrific this season. I think the manager’s done really well.

"You have to be magnanimous and you have to give Norwich great credit for what they’ve done, the manager’s done great, the players have done great.

“When I went to watch them play Bristol City I thought that they’ve got it going there, the atmosphere at the ground was terrific and that’s what we want to do next season, although obviously there are no guarantees.

“I think we’ve got to be men about it and say ‘well done’ and hopefully we can do that next season. I know it will be hard for Ipswich fans to take, but the most important thing is Ipswich not Norwich and if we can improve and have a successful season, then that will be great.”

Well said Mr Jewell. However much we dislike the budgies, a grudging admiration has to be observed for the way Paul Lambert has put together a team of lower league players & turned in 2 succesive promotions. This should be a lesson to us, we need hungry, well managed players who want to play for us & i,m sure PJ will do this.

He's totally right and as much as it is hard to say, they were very good this season and deserve promotion. Ok people bang on about quality of individuals, the late goals etc but as far as I'm concerned it just shows how a team can operate and a desire to keep going til the final whistle. Jewell will do well to instill some of that at Portman Road. Lets hope so eh.

Norwich did it without the money too, buying mostly lower league players and bonding them together. Meanwhile, we were doing the opposite buying expensive players from the Premier League.

@suffolkpoker

I don't think Mark was referring to Paul Jewell, but to Keane.

Scotland, Leadbitter, Edwards, Fulop, Priskin, Lee Martin were all bought by Keane and for a lot of money.

PJ is right. Hats off to Norwich, who have performed far above any expectations this season. Hopefully we can do the same next season...

Ive noticed the last couple of years, our scouting couldnt unearth a good player from 2 feet away.We used to find the odd gold nugget, but not anymore.Give norwich their due, their loanees wanted to play, and were not over 30 on the whole.(unlike some of our past free loaders).

I dont think we should promote, diving, getting fellow pro's sent off and forcing ref's to play 6 mins injury time each week.

I also think it would help to out play teams at home all the way through the season and not just from March.

suffolkpoker - I was referring to Keane and comparing our signings to Norwich's over the last two years.

Keane signed Fulop, Edwards, Leadbitter, Hourihane, Martin and Scotland from the Premier League, plus on-loan the following came from the Premier League (probably on big wages and with some loan fees): Begovic, Zuiverloon, Colback, Livermore, Townsend, D.Healy and Murphy. That's 13 altogether.

From the lower leagues, Keane only signed Fallon on loan and that was when he was in his management death-throws after all the money had gone.

I exclude free agents from the players listed above.

Spot on PJ - Norwich have shown us up badly..We need a massive overhaul this summer to get a decent team together.

*a new keeper - Westwood would be a brilliant signing.

*a new right back - edwards cannot defend & gives the ball away far too much.

*a new left back - Kennedy is too injury prone.

*a never say die "captain" in the middle of the defence - something we haven't had since DeVos left.

*Jimmy Bullard.

*2 other central midfielders - a holding player & a goalscorer (if Norris leaves).

*2 strikers - Priskin & Scotland : useless & slow..both need offloading asap.

Play off's next season at best. Too many better sides in this division plus some "moneybag" clubs coming down with their parachute payments.

Doom and Gloom. I agree with Denham Blue, our scout system has been poor in the last 4 years. Fortunately our youth system is decent. WE NEED SOME DUTCH PLAYERS!!

Although PJ speaks the truth, no town fan wants to hear we need to 'emulate Norwich'! Bettering their achievements this year would be more like it!

Playing for ninety minutes helps, still lets look forward and not back. Have to say, I'm not only excited about the coming season, but also about who will actually join [from the list we've been linked to so far ] if any of those at all. Billy Sharp top of my wish list.
