Town defender Tommy Smith has been nominated for the Young Men’s Player of the Year gong at the New Zealand Football Awards. Smith, who was part of the All Whites squad which qualified for the World Cup qualifying stages in South Africa last summer, has now won nine caps for the country where he grew up.

The centre-half, who spent the final few weeks of the season on loan at Colchester, faces competition from Kosta Barbarouses (Brisbane Roar) and Chris Wood (West Bromwich Albion). The winner will be announced in Auckland on Friday night.

Smith is likely to win his 10th and 11th caps next week when New Zealand take on Mexico and Australia in friendlies.
