Delaney: Keane Unreasonable
Delaney: Keane Unreasonable
Saturday, 4th Jun 2011 14:33

Defender Damien Delaney says “unreasonable boss” Roy Keane was why he was clocked travelling at 44mph in a 30 zone in his Audi A5 in Tuddenham Road on October 15th last year. The Irishman was fined £235, given four points on his licence and ordered to pay costs of £100 at South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

In a letter of mitigation, Delaney, who pleaded guilty by post, says he was anxious not to be late for training with former manager Roy Keane well-known for his tough attitude towards tardiness: “The reason I was going too fast was because I was late for work.

“I had an unreasonable boss at the time who would not accept lateness and would not have listened to me. I was worried that I was going to be fined two weeks’ wages.”

In December, Town dismissed claims of a fall-out between the pair, while Delaney later said he had no issue with his fellow Cork man.

The 29-year-old, who has been capped four times by his country, is currently with the Republic of Ireland squad ahead of their Euro 2012 qualifier in Macedonia tonight (Sky Sports One/HD1 8pm).

Delaney could have left earlier, so it's no excuse really. I guess he feels vindicated now as the £335 is small fry compared to two weeks wages for a Championship footballer! Hardly a punishment.

Keane's obsession with punctuality to training sessions was probably over the top though. Bosses earn more respect from their staff and get more out of them if they are slightly human in my opinion.

RK has not been ITFC manager for almost 6 MONTHS now - so who cares about this? I am more interested in the current regime and whether PJ has any signings imminent.

Having said that, what a stupid excuse for speeding. Most bosses are not too best pleased when an employee is late. Delaney simply should have left earlier. It is completely 100% his fault. I truely hope PJ has the same discipline at the club (even though Roy's approach appeared a little over the top). You simply can't have players turning up when they want.

Defence Lawyer: OK Damien, what we going to say in your defence?
Damien Delaney: Dunno, I was late for training?
DL: That's no good, anyone could say that.
DD: That's true
DL: Hold on, Roy Keane was in charge at the time wasn't he?
DD: Yes
DL: So we'll say how unreasonable he was towards players turning up late
DD: He wasn't that bad really
DL: Since when did the truth come into a good defence plea?

You should of left home 15 minutes earlier, arrived 5 minutes before training and been ready to go on time. No excuses.

Love all the "He should have left earlier remarks." I hope they can say hand on heart that none of them have ever been late for work. That there has never been a time when they have just been running behind their normal routine. It must be wonderful to be so perfect.......

As for Delaney he pleaded guilty and paid his fines....he gave a reason why he was speeding not an excuse nor did he ever claim he wasn't at fault....but then being late proves he is not one of the perfect ones....shame on him............

And I expect if the unthinkable had have happened....Delaney being fined wages that is. Times would have been very tough in his household. Claiming to have an unreasonable boss is not a defence. His fine should have reflected his earnings. A more suitable punishment however would be to make him dress as a ballerina, put him in the stocks and pelt him with various rotten food. (whilst forcing him to attempt to whistle the DR Congo National Anthem obviously)

I'm surprised that more people haven't attacked Roy keane. Even whoppit managed a numerous comment. IMO Delaney should just have accepted his fine and not looked for excuses.

Wickedblue, loved your post, made me smile
So many perfect people, yet I never met one.
Still the fine would be peanuts to him.

on £10k a week, you might think he could afford an alarm clock to get out of bed by 10am

Wicked blue, your attitude towards posts saying he should have left earlier is the attitude of a complete waste of space. If everyone else can turn up on time why can't he? I also surpose breaking the law for speeding is ok in your little world. You might not thing being late or speeding are big deals, but on both accounts they show a form of selfishness towards other people.

If he was that worried he'd live nearer the training ground or leave early.

By speeding he risks mowing down law abiding season ticket holders in his caravan....

I sense a complete lack of sympathy here. A few years ago my boss went loopy because I got banned for six weeks and was unable to do my job properly as a result. 44 in a 30 limit is no big deal.

The chances of survival are more than halved going that far over the limit. And at that time of the day there would have been loads of young walking to school.

Poor excuse from an over paid (un) professional.
