Wickham Again Not Involved as England Crash Out Sunday, 19th Jun 2011 21:41
Town striker Connor Wickham again wasn’t involved as England’s U21s crashed out of the UEFA European Championship in Denmark at the group stage after two late goals saw Stuart Pearce’s side to a 2-1 defeat to the Czech Republic.
Wickham, who had previously been capped three times at U21 level, failed to play a single minute during the tournament.

He never varied the team a great deal, he always used the same group of 15 players, the only thing which changed was whether they started or were a sub

wickedblue. Sorry to disagree. He chose players based on reputation not on a ability. Mancienne has done well to get a move to Hamburg because he wont make it here, Henderson has no passing ability just big lungs, Rose should not have been in the squad, Sturridge needs someone to play off, not welbeck who runs around a lot but produces very little. Our midfield was very very poor and this showed when they had people play around them and run through them. If he really wanted to bring on a defensive midfield player (which Rose isn't) then Rodwell is the answer. In all 3 games they had no drive, no product, no cutting edge and with the exception of Fielding, Smalling and Jones I really dont see any of them progressing to the main squad. Pearce follows his masters tactical plans and it showed. Clueless, poor and another 2 years of Pearce.

I was thinking about this and about people slating welbeck on the forums. I actually don't know if CW would of made that much of the difference. The midfield was so unimaginative trying to break the Czech done. Muamba didn't do anything IMO.

There were a lot of of overrated players in the England team, much like the seniors. When they come up against well organised tems, with some technically good players, they flounder. Most of them have probably never played 3 consecutive games in the time period of this tournament, and it showed.

He's been training with some high quality players and been under the wing of top quality coaches, the experience can only enhance his development. There was only an outside chance of him playing, even with the 4 3 3 / 4 2 2 1 formation that he fitted into, I think that's why Pearce took an extra striker. Well done again in making the squad.

Couldn't give dogs doodle about the U21's result last night, all i care about is Connor having valuable time with Englands elite at that age group. He was never going to get much game time, and wouldn't have even been selected if Andy Carrol was available. He will go into next season buzzing with energy and ready to go, with a frustrating but valuable experiance behind him.

Andygizmo, Took the words right out of my mouth! - How can people defend the way that England played ? - It was just like watching the senior team, sideways passing in own half and across the half way line. I know that Czech shut up shop and played for the point but pretty much all the under dog sides do that against England! No creativity and our chances were half chances at best, no real clear cut chances created in 90 mins. Just shows where our game is at the moment, apparently £100m's worth of talent and couldnt out fox a bunch of no hopers! - Then when they eventually did, they struggled to defend for the ONLY 10 mins of the match that they were asked questions! Lots of over priced and over rated 'talent' and i know they are young etc etc but very little to get excited about, however, i did think Kyle Walker looked good going forward. At to really sum it all up, England were the only team to c*ck up my 7 team accumulator for £164!! - Pearce out!!

Wickham may have had a knock going into the games. TBH 1-0 up with a minute to go, looking good for semi spot and bringing on a defensive player would be the obvious thing to. Failure to defend and keep a clean sheet is what cost them. I think Wickham will benefit from the experience. The biggest benefit to Wickham is that he wont now be associated with the failure of the team. The argument and questions as to why he diddnt play will probably enhance his reputation. As for players like Henderson/ Jones, they will get a rough ride from opposition fans next season :) Conor can now get a rest and come back fresh for pre season. Hopefully he will be fit for Bristol City assuming he is still a Town player.

Although disappointed we are out, this does mean Connor will return a little earlier and hopefully not miss as much of pre-season as first feared. However, will he still be our player by the time the season starts? Time will tell.

What was the point in Connor attending this tournament?

Agree with Clive Baker, the beat and dogsy40. Game time = shop window. In fairness the U21s is to give the youngesters experience of tournaments at the end of the season if they break into the full squad. Agree with the comment it will give him some experience of sitting on the bench. However I am sure there was plenty of rich youngsters on that tour with a nicer pair of trainers, a nicer iPod, bigger tatoos and diamond earings etc that Connor might have got jealous of and want what they have got. We have to keep hold of him. Wickham and Chopra has an air of Kuqi and Bent. COYB AND COME ON THE SEASON

wickedblue Have to agree with most of andygizmo's comments. We had three games to judge performance....not just the last few minutes yesterday

..... pretty obvious that Pearce doesn't have a tremendously high regard for Wickham - played an almost totally inactive part in a squad that seriously lacked goal scoring ability, and he still didn't feature. Had a reasonably high regard for Pearce previously - why he didn't use Wickham amazes me. Wonder how he shaped up in training !!!! ...... who knows ??
