Ellington Delighted to Be Reunited With Jewell
Ellington Delighted to Be Reunited With Jewell
Tuesday, 21st Jun 2011 16:22

New Town signing Nathan Ellington said he was delighted to be reunited with his former Wigan and Derby boss Paul Jewell after signing a two-year deal with the Blues earlier today. The 29-year-old says the Liverpudlian is the manager who has got the best out of him throughout his career.

Speaking at a Portman Road press conference this afternoon, Ellington said: “I’m very happy to be joining Paul Jewell again.

“He’s excited at the job he has here at Ipswich and what lies in store for the club. He sold me on that and I am very happy to be joining a big club like Ipswich.

“When you play for a club you have to have a manager who believes in you and I think he’s believed in me the most over my career, and that’s produced good football for me and winning football for him. It’s a recipe for success really.”

The Bradford-born striker, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Preston, says he hopes Jewell will replicate the job he did with the Latics: “I think he built a great squad at Wigan. Not only were they great on the field but we had a togetherness like nowhere else I’ve ever been.

“I know he knows all the components that you need to make a successful team, obviously he managed that at Wigan and he was trying to recreate that at Derby, but obviously things didn’t work out exactly how he wanted.

“I have a lot of faith in him as a manager and he has a lot of faith in me as a player and he knows how to bring out the best in me. I’m happy to be working with a manager like that again and getting back to what I know I can do.”

Chief executive Simon Clegg added: “We’re delighted that Nathan’s with us and will be with us for the next couple of seasons. He’s had an extensive career, has had a good goalscoring record in seasons gone by and has worked with the manager on a couple of occasions, both with Wigan Athletic and at Derby County on loan.

“He’s a good signing for the club, the third signing of the summer and we continue to be very excited and very upbeat in terms of what we can achieve with the squad going forward.”

Clegg refused to be drawn on any further possible signings, keeping to the club’s usual policy of not commenting on speculation, although he confirmed that Ellington won’t be the last player through the Portman Road doors this summer.

He is one of us now, support him, back him, sing his name, be patient with him that is the what we do when we sign someone new, that is the ipswich way, of old. the team needs building and improving to get back to its former glory and so in my opinion do the attitude of the fans, we were once regarded as the best but a too bigger section have lost those values.

Think this could turn out to be a very good signing on a free. Can see him replacing Scotland (sky sports linking Brighton with a move). If he goes could even see us bringing in another striker. Think you could do with 5 strikers who can compete in this league.

PaulSimmons - your optimism really is uncontrollable isn't it... All the negative posters, just Give the guy a break, you are supposedly ITFC FANs, and Ellington is now an ITFC PLAYER done and dusted. Get behind him and every single player that puts on a town shirt this season. Complaining about a signing already completed doesn't help anyone. Have faith, personally think he could turn out to be a very good move

It's amazing how much negativity there is from people about every new signing and indeed every rumoured signing.

Can we just accept that some on this board think any players signed by the club are either too young, too old, too inexperienced, too expensive or just too funny looking?

And, of course, we'll accept that you are all the sorts of tactical geniuses that would have spotted the raw talent in the likes of Grant Holt, Andrew Crofts and Aaron Wilbraham too? (yeah, I went there)

If Paul Jewell's a good manager, he won't just be looking at Soccerbase when he signs players, he'll be using his intuition about the mentality of the ones he's signing.

If he gets it right, he'll get us promoted, if he gets it wrong, he'll be fired.

I'd rather support him and the players in the hope the former happens, I'm surprised that's not what all Town fans want.

As I said on another post - would not have been my preferred signing, but nonetheless I wish him well.

ELLINGTON is a great signing beleive me and if you think that 29 is old then you need your head testing he is hungry for succsess and will bang in 20+ goals for us and as for WICKHAM wot the puck!!
you believe the hype about him i think hes krap! whats he done for us??? guy has got potential yes and no one is gona pay 10mill+ for him you are dillusional. anyone would think hes a ysheaqrer type player or something if he was that good he wouldnt of been on the bench for the under 21s would he

Free transfer, reasonable wages, different to what we already have. Whats not to like? Good players don't turn into bad ones overnight. If anyone can get him back to his best its Paul Jewell whom the player himself has faith in. We are not going to sign 6 or 7 £2 million pound players. There has to be a balance of purchases and frees, so wise up moaners, this is a good deal for us.

Welcome to ITFC Duke! I think this is a low-risk signing as he's a freebie and probably not on ridiculously high wages in footballer terms. I cannot see him being first choice but he would be useful coming off the bench late on in games. He has experience at this level and played his best football under PJ so perhaps he will be rejuvenated? If not then at least we haven't broken the bank to get him.

On the face of it Ellington is not an overwhelming signing but Jewell knows him and how he will fit into his plans and thats good enough for me. The most important thing that Jewell has to do is blend what he has got and what he brings in, into a team. He and the players will need even more of our patience and support because this season will only be the start of sorting out the mess that is ITFC. Good luck Paul and wellcome Nathan.

I think some fans would moan if we signed Messi "yeah, but is he tall enough for this league!"
We have to be realistic and only judge him once he's kicked a ball for us. Granted he hasn't been great of late but plenty of players have been thrown on the heap only to find the right move for them and resurrect there careers, maybe we or PJ are that move for him.
Look on the bright side folks, he might be able to hold the ball up unlike Scotland and if he chips in with 10 or so goals that'll do if he's making more for Chopra.
Anyway believe it or not I'm 50/50 on him all I'm saying is he hasn't even kicked a ball yet and if he's sh1te, he'll be on the bench not getting a game and he cost nowt so no worries.

Must say I'm a tad under whelmed, never really rated him even when he was with Wigan, but I'm prepared to give him a chance. Suspect he will be back up for the dream team of Choppra and Wickham. Good work to sign him on a free, hope he is not on silly money, suspect at least one of Scotland or Priskin, if not both to be shown the door soon.

really happy with this... don't know why there's so much negativity from people though... the club can't win... don't sign anyone and there's unrest, sign someone and he's rubbish... so predictable sadly...

Churchmans - I'd like to see us go in for Darren Ambrose as an alternative to Bullard
