Coppinger Signs New Doncaster Deal
Coppinger Signs New Doncaster Deal
Thursday, 21st Jul 2011 10:17

Doncaster Rovers midfielder James Coppinger, a Town target earlier in the summer, has signed a new contract with the South Yorkshire club. In May, the Blues had a £300,000 offer for the 30-year-old rejected along with a £2.3 million bid for striker Billy Sharp.

Unconfirmed reports have claimed Town have made subsequent offers for the former Exeter man, but Rovers’ longest-serving player putting pen to paper on a deal until June 2014 would appear to end any hopes Paul Jewell had of signing the Guisborough-born winger.

Clearly a man without ambition?

However, one can only applaud his loyalty to his club, something many ITFC fans had been moaning about with Norris.

Good luck to the man I say.

GOOD!

Never rated him, average champo Midfielder. Not sure why people are questioning his ambition.. What about ours? Apparently we want promotion & want a CM partnership with a combined age of 64.

Thank god this story is now dead!

He is obviously happy at Doncaster and probably did not see a great deal of improvement coming to Ipswich. With our current squad (as of today) both clubs will probably finish in the same area of the table.

I remain optimistic but with the current defenders available Ipswich will leak goals, as is showing in the friendlies.

I now wonder wether we are going to regret letting our top players leave, as a lot of players we have bid for have been rebuffed, and they have decided to stay at there current clubs. In hindsight should we have held on to Wickham for another season?? because we have a weakend side without him.
At the moment his money does not seem to be doing us any good, I hope I am wrong and something does materialise in the next 2 weeks or so !!!!!!!!

Its refreshing to see obvious loyalty from footballers. He is Donnys longest serving player and choosen to sign a new contract with the club that gave him a very good career. Maybe if a Prem club or Leicester came in it would be a different story as he would be moving up a level.

Best of luck to him.

We've got the cash, why can't we sign players?

Under Evans reign, we are now so poorly thought of that ordinary players don't see Ipswich as a club with ambition and potential.

Brittaniaman - unsure what difference selling Wickham has made, given that would we have scored more goals with him?? debatable given that Chopra should score more than he did last season and Scotland scored 9 goals in half a season, so you'd be hoping for 15 - 20 over a full season.

Would we have conceded less goals with him, no, high work rate but he isn't a defender and it will be to those boys we look come the end of the season when we are counting the goals against tally.

One player does not make a team - despite what the papers seem to think lording all these supposed supermen - I agree he hasn't been replaced as of yet, but I think his importance to the team has been mixed up with his potential.

He had the potential to be very good for us (great should be reserved for those that earn it - and those are few and far between), but to be honest, he was still only a youngster learning his trade - and if our season had rested on his shoulders alone I fear we would have been disappointed at the end of the season.

In respect of Coppinger, loyalty should be rewarded and in this case it has been - 30 year old being given a 3 year deal - good work if you can get it.

It's nothing to do with us anymore, we move on to the next option.

i must admit im starting to get a bit concerned by the amount of players/clubs rebuffing us now.we must be offering peanuts in fees and wages.PJ was supposed to be given money to spend b4 we sold Wickam and all we've spent is 1.5m and brought in another 8m.has he got the money or were we duped into renewing our season tickets?

There are better than him out there.

I think several people are still in the 'I want success NOW' mindset that came in with RK. We've moved on from that - the talk is of building and developing a team and a squad. We have to stop getting our knickers in a twist that we won't have a promo pushing team this year. It will take time, and it is the Ipswich way that people keep saying that they want!

Alot can happen in a week remember,
We still have three weeks till the start of the season and this is the time where clubs want to start getting rid of the transfer listed players,

I'm sure we will still get 3-4 players in before this time is up so lets not panick to early,
Paul has delivered so far and i have every faith in him.

I agree with whoppit, our current chances of making the playoffs are zilch, PJ you need to try a bit harder and spend a little bit more money to get these players to come to itfc.

This is what we need to do.

Get our players to sign new contracts so we can get better money for them.
And don't lose others on a free.

Doctor, I am sure keeping Wickham partnering Chopra would have been like reinventing Kuqi and Bent, where if we let in 3 goals, we would go and score 4 goals the other end, those were the days hey ?? but that is only my opinion for what it is worth ??. wether Scotland or Priskin can come good we shall have to wait and see, that would certainly save money on that front, perhaps either of these could become a Grant Holt in disguise ??

Thats that then! Were we not told that news was expected on the striker we bid on today. It's getting a bit close for comfort as these signings do take time even when bids have been accepted, I have every faith in P.J but its getting closer and closer to the 6th august and we have no defense and a rather fragmented midfeild.

I've always said we should have kept Wickham. Knew we wouldn't replace him as there is no one realistically that could have. No one with his youth, size, strength or potential. People that said '£8million can build a promotion side like when we sold Dyer' were just being naive in my opinion. Sorry to break the news but time has moved on and clubs are spending more and want more money for their players. Leicester have spent the amount we got for Wickham and yes, some quality in there (Danns, Mills) but not exactly players that will instigate Leicester blowing every other team out the water, not by a long way!

Like Britanniaman says Chopra and Wickham could have been an awesome strike partnership, but no we sell, before any new signings came in, our best player (tell me who our best player was if you don't believe that) for money, again showing a lack of ambition and confidea nce to do the job without large investment. We were being told anyway that there was money to spend before Wickham was sold, and we've done b*gger all with that money so far so I really don't see the point in selling him.

Fair play to Coppinger, I'm not sure he would have exactly shot us up the league anyway.

Flawed transfer logic going for best players of our rivals and it is getting frustrating now - and yes before you say it Millwall, Donny and even Preston and Sheff Utd are at the same level as us in the eyes of their fans, their owners and their players). We are almost bound to lose out, particularly with money bags teams like Leicester around or will have to pay well over the odds. Yes we got Chopra and well done on that but the way to progress is getting more of the likes of Cresswell in and some decent foreign signings too...oh and giving O'Connor, Hyam, Civelli and Drury a chance!
