Jewell: Plenty More to Come from Jay Wednesday, 27th Jul 2011 12:13
Blues boss Paul Jewell says Town fans saw only a glimpse of what new signing Jay Emmanuel-Thomas is capable of during last night’s abandoned goalless game at Colchester and believes the 20-year-old will get better as he gets fitter and settles in at his new club. The Londoner joined Town for an initial fee of £1.5 million rising to £2 million from Arsenal yesterday.
Jewell said: “I think you could see flashes [at Colchester], but we’ve got to be careful, he’s played at Blackpool, Doncaster and Cardiff on loan before, but he’s one for the future.
“He’s not 100% fit, you could see that, he’s missed a lot of training over the last week or so. He will get fitter, he will get better and he will be a good player, no doubt about that.”
The Town manager, who played the versatile youngster up front in a role just behind Michael Chopra at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, is keen not to put too much pressure on the man known as JET at his former club: “I think we don’t want to heap too much on the young boy’s shoulders, even though they’re big shoulders. We don’t expect that every time he gets the ball he has to score a goal.”
Reflecting on the Colchester performance overall, Jewell didn’t appear too concerned with his side’s dearth of chances and absence of goals: “There’s a lot of work for us to do in the midfield and the full-back areas. Creativity was a problem last year, but I’m sure it won’t be this year.”

Play JET behind Chopra then sign Koumas on a free to add more creativity cutting in from the wing. Give Drury a chance alongside Bowyer, he always looks more creative than Leadbitter. Although the latter is better defensively...
I still feel we should put JET on opposite wing to carson, Martin doesnt create anything plus hes a pussy in a challenge with bowyer and drury in middle, drury looked decent when put there against cambridge. he was spreading the ball really well and picking out a pass. put chops and priskin up top for now to see how they get on. edwards, ingy, del and kennedy at the back. take experience any day of week.
im not sure what defenders are available at the moment so go for but we do def need another right back as much i would like to see ainsley play we cant chuck him in at the deep end quite yet.
Top priority is a CB and a RB, can see this being a permanent signing and then maybe another loanee? I'm not too bothered about finding a creative midfielder, I can see PJ giving JET a free roaming role behind the two attackers with Chopra and one of; Ellington, Scotland (who has been looking sharp) & Priskin. What do you guys think?
Phil, I for one commend you for your well-informed use of the word 'dearth'. Its about time we raised the bar and educated some of the text-speak / spellchecker boys on this forum, 'init'? To clarify, by "raising the bar", I dont mean the local pub either. :)
If we coach Edwards to be a right back he could do a job. It seems Jewell might be trying to do this as Edwards certainly looked a lot better last night than he did at all last season in terms of position.
Some great signings so far and am very optimistic, with Chopra and JET etc we now just need a supplier and the goals will come, a midfielder with imagination (and lets forget Jimmy, not gonna happen) and sure up the defence with a CB and RB and i reckon we have a sporting chance....! so 3 more signings and we are sorted...!
Yes fitness will be an issue it seems. Some willful characters will need to be moulded into a team. Taken off the London train, strip their clubbing clothes off and run up and down for a few hours.
Including PJ?
Mr Jewell clearly loves a challenge. And needs to get fit.
Don't write off the possibility of Jimmy B coming yet. The new season draws nearer and he's still not found a club, and it's difficult to see him pulling on a Hull City shirt again given his recent contretemps. Let's wait and see.
hope there is more to come, i also think we now a good strike force and are in need of a yound, solid CB and a creative midfielder to provide for the strikers, colback?(sunderland now have gardner and vaughan) haroun?
Certainly looks a good prospect viewing clips on You Tube, although they can sometimes be deceiving at times. Hopefully JET's experience of already playing alongside Chopra for Cardiff will also help.
