Clegg: Town Weighing Up Offer
Clegg: Town Weighing Up Offer
Wednesday, 10th Aug 2011 16:26

Town chief executive Simon Clegg has revealed that the club are weighing up a bid received for an unnamed player. The Blues chief also says there is still money for manager Paul Jewell to spend on more new additions this summer.

Clegg told TWTD that the bid has been made but no more than that: “There is an offer for one player at the moment but I’m not going to go any further. Will it lead to anything? I don’t know. It may do, it may not.”

Jewell is keen to continue to add to his squad with Blackburn midfielder Keith Andrews a loan target and another right-sided central defender top of the list.

The chief executive says Marcus Evans will continue to give the Blues boss cash with each deal taken on its own merits rather than the club having a strict budget: “We’re not working to a particular budget. The owner has made it clear that he will back the manager.

“I think the manager has been incredibly savvy in terms of the players that he has brought in and I have no doubt that we will reap the rewards for that.

“If he feels that he needs to bring in more players, and he certainly does, then he knows that he enjoys the support of the owner and myself in that regard.”

Clegg is pleased with the club’s seven signings so far with Jewell taking a greater role in the negotiations than his predecessor Roy Keane: “I think we’ve done some good business this summer. Paul is very hands on in the club’s transfer dealings.

“It was always a three-person approach but I think the dynamics have changed slightly. I’m comfortable with that and between us we’re doing good business, we’re just doing it slightly differently than we were in the past.”

Jewell has clearly impressed Clegg since he took over after Keane’s sacking in January: “Paul’s a class act. We knew that when we appointed him. He’s one of only a handful of managers to get two clubs promoted to the Premier League.

“I think he’s doing a fantastic job. He’s a got a really good spirit up there at Playford Road. He’s got a really good coaching staff around him and is an incredibly impressive individual, who calls it very straight. What you see is what you get with Paul, and I like that.

“He made it clear in the interview that he wants to be involved across the board in all aspects of the club.

“We’re delighted with the appointment, it’s been really positive for the football club. He’s led us to some really good business and I’m confident in terms of what he can do with the football club to take us to where we want to go.”

I am humble enough to admit I misread, I though we were weighing up an offer for one of our players..........so if my first comment seems a little odd that's why!

I read it that the bid was for one of our players but the report does seem clouded in mystery. If it is for one of our it's bound to be Scotland or better still Priskin, who else is there? we've given everybody else away!

It's been said a million times before but a Centre Back & Goalkeeper please.

If its Priskin I would drive him there myself, but I cannot believe there is anyone that gullible, more likely to be Carson or Leadbitter.

A couple of teams have still expressed an interest in Tommy Smith. Would be a bad move if we sold him right now as we have a severe lack of defenders anyway.
Can only think it is either him, Leadbitter, Scotland or Carson.
If its Scotland- time to say goodbye. We have enough firepower upfront.
Can't be ALB-

I've heard (on the grapevine!!) that its Michael Chopra for a SIGNIFICANT fee from a Premiership Club (could be as much as 4.5m).
If this is true, it will be a difficult decision for the board to mull over. We could make an instantaneous profit on the guy, - but he is undoubtedly our best player.

facebook mates say its michael chopra, please no

Well if its Chopra you can kiss goodbye to any hopes of doing anything this season as they would definitely take an offer of that size, if they do it just proves what we all thought that we are trying to balance the books as opposed to building a team.

Even if it WAS Michael Chopra- the board wouldn't accept 4.5. He's worth at least 6/7 m at the moment to our team.
Chopra is only just settling....unless its Arsenal or someone like that- he ain't going to be interested in moving!!!
Tommy Smith-----I guarantee it....
