Sonko Waiting for Town Offer
Sonko Waiting for Town Offer
Wednesday, 17th Aug 2011 22:44

Former Reading and Stoke central defender Ibrahima Sonko says Town have told him they intend to make him a contract offer. The free agent Senegalese international revealed that he could be on the way to the Blues via Twitter last week.

Updating the situation in a tweet , the 30-year-old says no deal is yet on the table but says the club have said one will be forthcoming: “Not yet. They said they’ll make an offer though, but we’ll just have to wait and see. Two games in three days, [it’s] hard to have time for talk.”

Born in Bignona, Senegal but having moved to France as a baby, Sonko began his career with Town’s old UEFA Cup foes St Etienne, moving on to Grenoble, where he made his first senior appearances, in 1999.

Three years later, he joined Brentford, the 6ft 3in tall defender spending two seasons at Griffin Park before joining Reading on a Bosman in 2004.

Capped four times by Senegal, scoring one goal, Sonko became a cult hero at the Madejski Stadium and acquired the nickname ‘Superman’ for his exceptional leaping ability as he helped Steve Coppell’s side into the Premier League.

Stoke paid an initial £2 million for his services in August 2008 but his time at the Britannia Stadium was less successful. Loans at Hull City and Portsmouth followed, before he was released at the end of last season.

Sonko rejoined Reading on trial this summer and played in a number of pre-season games but talks broke down, with his old club only willing to offer a deal which equated to a 90% pay cut with the player only willing to take a drop of 75%.

Asked about Sonko’s first Twitter comment that he “could meet with my friend Ívar [Ingimarsson] again soon” after Saturday’s defeat to Hull, Blues boss Paul Jewell played Town’s interest down: “He might be going to dinner with him!”

Cant wait. Another past it player. I expect sonko and ingimarrson can spend their saturday afternoons out together in aldeburgh eating fish an chips. Buy somebody young for a fee, am sick of injury prone free transfers who nobody else wants. Seems this is jewells only option however.

Nobody else seems interested in Sonko,- anything to do with a large wage packet?
Could be Diallo part 2, but at the moment I would play Diallo anyday over Delaney and Smith.

Thought he was a good player everytime I saw him. Can't be any worse than what we have !! Fingers crossed

Its to do with Sonko's injury record. Very prone to injury and Reading in the end didn't fell he was really worth shelling it out for as he's likely to play very few games this season.
Diallo part 2? Sicknote part 2 I'm afraid.
Even if we can get 5 or 6 games out of him this season it will be worth it. Still feel we need somebody less injury-prone at the back.

so much for the Wickham money being put back in to the club.

Another free agent that no one really wants, but agree with those on here better than what we have got

This is a knee jerk reaction to Southampton. We mustn't sign players who are ill/sick all the time. Bad for other players morale.

Not sure about this, he doesnt seem to have done much since getting injured in 2007

For effing hells sake, more spin, more free transfers, more of same. Please, people in club, stop saying there is money available when there isnt. Be honest with us, now! You will sell leadbitter too, and that money will go to marcus as well. It is all lies to keep us going and paying good money to see abject failure. Southampton last night were fresh, honest and were what they were. No crap. Same as norwich. Our club is an m.e ego trip.

Get him, we need central defenders very badly.
Smith and Delany are absolutly rubish. Mistakes week in week out and are costing us. Definetly get ridoff Smith. What on earth is he still doing playing for us I dont know. Even Cholchester didnt want him.
Im sure we have some youngsters who play in that position and are better than Smith.
PJ must see that they are both absolutly rubish.

Tony, i agree, what we have is hopeless. But if we are tomreplace we need players who have functional legs.

I really have had enough. All what we keep hearing is how Smith and Delany make mistakes. Last season was the same especialy with Smith.
Get ridoff them both. Dont deserve the shirt. They are letting everyone down every week.

Tonyitfc82- In an ideal world we should be getting rid of them. But the problem is who to replace them with? Sonko for example. Used to be a very good player 2005-2007. Legs aren't up to it now and his trademark "superman" jumps can't be done anymore as his body can't take it. Delaney and Smith play regularly. Sonko won't. We will then end up with JET in CD (he can play there).
I don't feel Ainsley is ready yet and we can't seem to sign anyone else. Some of the targets (st Ledger, Upson, woodgate, Ferdinand etc) could have done a great job but we failed to land them.
Players like Sonk aren't the answer. We don't need someone to warm the bench on a Saturday Afternoon. We need players whose legs aren't shot.

We need an organiser who has good positioning sense...like Mogga when we last went up.

I don't think that Edwards, Delaney and Smith are bad players as individuals but as a collective they are not good.

Incidentally when Smith went to the World Cup he was really good and played against much better players than Championship standard especially against Italy when he was outstanding. He was playing along side a very experienced player who communicated well with him in order to give him confidence. I have forgotten his name but he played for Blackburn...Ryan someone

Have had a detailed look at Sonko. He's had a really unfortunate footballing career (injuries/red tape etc). Extremely injury prone but also has had a fair share of difficulties.

Erika.
I really believe we have a very good team indeed.
We have planty of good strikers. Also good in middfield. But when it comes to defence we are worse than a League 2 club and thats only because Smith and Delany.
Im absolutely sure that Sonk will be a million times better than what we have. For that matter anyone will do better than what we have. Even if Sonk only plays 10 games for the season I think that would be at least an extra 7-8 points come the end of the season.
We need to get this sorted it has lasted way to long.

I think that Sonko will be worth it just for the entertainment factor alone. At least he's known for getting stuck in. Lallana wouldn't have been allowed to run past him with ease....there's countless examples of this on youtube-
