Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management Saturday, 20th Aug 2011 20:26
Boss Paul Jewell apologised to fans after his worst defeat in management as nine-man Town were hammered 7-1 at Peterborough. The Blues manager refused to blame a number of questionable refereeing decisions for the severity of the loss.
Jewell said: “I think that’s worst defeat I’ve suffered as a manager. For 12 minutes I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Well, I could believe what I was seeing because it’s happened too often, and obviously the 45 second minutes was the longest 45 minutes of my football life.
“It was damage limitation at half-time. We had nine men, they were playing with superb confidence and popping the ball around. We were just trying to keep the score down.”
The Blues boss refused to blame a number of contentious decisions by referee Graham Scott: “I’m definitely not going to hide after a 7-1 defeat and blame it on the referee.
“Someone just said that three of their goals were offside and the penalty was outside the box. That might be true, but it doesn’t hide what’s going on in our team and the defending was of shambolic proportions.
“I’ll take responsibility, I’m the manager, I pick the team, so I’m not hiding behind anything else. I’ll take it on the chin, I’ll get my tin hat on and fight through it and try and get people in there who are worthy of playing for us because there are too many people who are not good enough or worthy to play for us.”
Jewell says the results in the last week are as poor as they come: “I don’t think too many teams can have conceded 12 goals in five days and it’s hugely embarrassing and it’s really, really hurting me. But what can I do? I’ve just got to try and bounce back tomorrow and try and get people in the building.
“Some of the goals we concede are just ridiculous. The last goal sums us up. The guy’s gone through three challenges and has just brushed us off. When it becomes physical, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, the white flag comes out.
“Whenever we come under pressure, we collapse. Anyone who has seen us over the last couple of years will have seen that as soon as it gets tough to many go missing.”
Jewell apologised to supporters and promised that he will turn things around: “I’m hugely embarrassed and I’m sorry. They’ve been fantastic for this club. I’ll take it on the chin, I know it’s down to me. I’m hurting every bit as much as they are.
“They were singing ‘we want our money back’ and they deserve it. These fans that turn up week-in and week-out, home and away, they deserve better. I think I deserve better than what I’m getting from the players as well. I’m determined that we will eventually get it right.”
Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson was unsurprisingly delighted: “It was as comfortable as it could possibly be when they went down to nine men, but even before that the most pleasing thing for me was the first half because for 20 minutes we just carved them open and got four quick goals.”

Where to start ? I like Jewell and believe he has a passion for the club ! Evans has a form of commitment but is it all about himself ? Clegg is as lost as the team and out of his depth but probably a nice guy ! How do we get the answers ? Tonight , Martin was so far behind his man he had to dive in , unlucky to be sent off the linesman did not flag until someone spoke in his earpiece ? Why ? Martin i do not think is valuable to the team , sell him ! Leadbitter if somone wants him for £2 million sell him his mistake led to a goal and he did not look angry or sorry and played like a pussycat for the rest of the game , looks like he had no pride in the shirt ! Delaney , brilliant against Arsenal last year , this year with a new contract looks like he could not care less , either no brain or a poor footballer or both , get rid of him .Ainsley what a main game debut playing alongside Delaney i felt sorry for him , jury out give him a chance . Edwards off the pace terrible positional sense easily beaten, midfield wide or out ! Smith Christ this text takes longer to write then he played , shocking challenge but out of the area but last man sending off , should hang his head in shame , his time at town i feel is done , i hope he can ressurect his carreer elsewhere. The others all need to do better even Chopra better not pull the old i have picked up a knock take me off when the going gets tough. I have followed Town for over 40 years and cannot remember feeling so low . Players tonight send your weekly wage to a local charity you do not deserve paying ! You are a disgrace to the shirt and have shown your manager no respect at all . Pull yourselves together or go and play elsewhere i would rather see us play non league than have a bunch of over paid premadonnas on the pitch each week . Man Utd 9-0 was a tough result but it was Man utd this was Peterboro , sort it out fast or make a living elsewhere , one bloody furious supporter !!!!

People have been talking about the money invested and the money to spend, how much have Peterborough spent ? Look at the coaching back up Hutchings and Mcarthy not a fu*king clue, the defence was shocking, all of them all 4 no excuses. It`s no good Jewell talking about the poor defending and a soft under belly he`s been here for 7 mths ffs, it`s time he sorted it. Or perhaps it`s a lack of genuine football management/coaching by him and his back up staff. Peterborough tried to play from back to front from the outset, that`s how we used too. I`m sick and tired of all this smoke and mirrors.

I am very concerned about our club. I don't want to knock Jewell but my mate who supports Derby told me what state he left their club in and it worries me that he is going down the same track. Too many experienced players, playing their final years out but on huge wages - taking the money and showing little fight or concern for our club. How much money did we pay Delaney to not leave on a free next year? Think it would make me ill if I found out the truth. I went today and all I could think about is teams like Sheff W, Sheff Utd, Charlton, Plymouth - mis-managed and now languising in the lower leagues - there is absolutely no reason why we will not end up in that situation which is pretty scary. Worth saying something of the support also - I have no issues with the language, the singing and all that has been complained about lately but I do find it utterly embarrassing when our fans feel the need to copy other teams chants or in today's case, Man City's Poznan. Don't you have any self respect - looked like a bunch of ****s

I'm sorry to say this but PJ is not as well as Keane at the moment there is only one person I can see to motivate this shambolic mess & that is George Burley.

Delaney, Smith and Ainsley are truely dire. God knows how Delaney got a new contract, he has been dire since he arrived here. Leadbitter is also horrific, sell him to Portsmouth. Can't keep playing Edwards right back, he is clueless, but I do rate him as a right midfielder/winger. Need a centre midfielder who is comfortable on the ball, Bowyer has let us down massively so far, even at Non-League Cambridge he was made to look poor. ALSO, perhaps controversialy, it is my opinion that 4-4-2 is dead. 1 game this year we played it and we won 3-0 away. Against both Southampton and Peterborough we were over-run in the middle of midfield. Shouldn't have let civelli go - on fifa manager he scores the winning penalty in the 2018 world cup final.

..... like I said in an earlier post Ipswich Town is fast losing it's pedigree - many 'true blue' people are no longer at the Club for various reasons, and much has gone with them. Sadly, we have lost our way - we have an Owner who no one can make much of, a Chief Exec who clearly doesn't know the game, and a Manager who was never going to be the right choice for this Club. This is no longer the ITFC many of us once knew - and that is really SAD. Owner, Chief Exec, Manager, Supporter, whoever - who thought McAuley would not be missed this season is / was moronic to think so - as is now being proved - and many of these listed people should have known far better. But this is only one of many, many, crazy decisions of recent seasons, from which the Club is suffering. Just glad I have some wonderful memories of this once great Club - and God knows where we go from here.

Just got back after missing train A total embarassment, what a shambles ITFC has become. Id like to think the players/club will make the small gesture of refunding all those who went to sit/stand through that totally inept performance. It's harsh to chant 'our defense is f******g sh1t' and I can understand Stockdales reaction...but his reaction is because he knows it will effect the short term...but I think in a way it needed to be said to effect the long term. People need to know that we have MAJOR problems...maybe that is what it takes for something to actually get done about it. We are a laughing stock, continue like this and we will finish 24th with a record low points.

"I'll ...try and get people in there who are worthy of playing for us because there are too many people who are not good enough or worthy to play for us.” I would do that sooner rather than later PJ - Starting with the whole defence except Cresswell!

You have to ask yourself what on earth has happened to the way we used to do things here? I'm afraid that ever since Mr.Evans & Simon Clegg came in things have really gone tits up. We used to play really attractive football - that was demanded by the fans. We used to have a great youth system. We used to pick up the odd freebie & turn them into a fans favourite. Now all we do is chuck one load of money after another at a bunch of overpaid nobodies who don't really care where they play their football. Football as we knew it is officially dead. I long for the Burley years.

Leadbitter is a poor player. He does not show any desire to play for Ipswich, he does not even move to create an option, particularly when we have a throw in. Also Ipswich teams and in particular Paul Jewel teams play from the back. However they seem to have developed a poor long ball tactic of playing to JET. I do not blame Paul Jewell for this. I just blame Delaney et el. For not being technically good enough footballers.
bringbackthedutch added 00:22 - Aug 21
If someone actually wants to buy Leadbitter let him go, he's been totally average at best the whole time he's been here. We can't pass out from the back. We can't pass in midfield and we're painfully slow. We desperately need a creative midfielder, but there's no evidence that PJ's been looking for one and a whole new defence except for Cresswell. Peterborough's not highly paid or vaunted midfield calmly passed at moved through us like they were on the training ground. Make's me wonder what we do coach? Time for the second coming of Saint George.

It was only a matter of time, and today just forced my hand. I have just cancelled my season ticket DD after supporting the club through thick and thin for 28 years - I no longer want a single penny of my hard-earned cash going to this football club that treats its fans like a cash cow and produces a performance like that today. We have been forced to accept absolute rubbish for years now, with the promise that better times were just around the corner. Well, this is one corner too many - I'd rather keep my money for me and mine thank you. Watching players earning my annual salary in just one or two weeks while playing like lazy overpaid idiot primadonnas just turns my stomach now, so enough is enough. Sorry if some of you don't agree, but feel free to keep chucking your money at IP1 if you want. Me, I'm zipping up the purse strings! Here's hoping that you get your faith rewarded ....
