Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management
Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management
Saturday, 20th Aug 2011 20:26

Boss Paul Jewell apologised to fans after his worst defeat in management as nine-man Town were hammered 7-1 at Peterborough. The Blues manager refused to blame a number of questionable refereeing decisions for the severity of the loss.

Jewell said: “I think that’s worst defeat I’ve suffered as a manager. For 12 minutes I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Well, I could believe what I was seeing because it’s happened too often, and obviously the 45 second minutes was the longest 45 minutes of my football life.

“It was damage limitation at half-time. We had nine men, they were playing with superb confidence and popping the ball around. We were just trying to keep the score down.”

The Blues boss refused to blame a number of contentious decisions by referee Graham Scott: “I’m definitely not going to hide after a 7-1 defeat and blame it on the referee.

“Someone just said that three of their goals were offside and the penalty was outside the box. That might be true, but it doesn’t hide what’s going on in our team and the defending was of shambolic proportions.

“I’ll take responsibility, I’m the manager, I pick the team, so I’m not hiding behind anything else. I’ll take it on the chin, I’ll get my tin hat on and fight through it and try and get people in there who are worthy of playing for us because there are too many people who are not good enough or worthy to play for us.”

Jewell says the results in the last week are as poor as they come: “I don’t think too many teams can have conceded 12 goals in five days and it’s hugely embarrassing and it’s really, really hurting me. But what can I do? I’ve just got to try and bounce back tomorrow and try and get people in the building.

“Some of the goals we concede are just ridiculous. The last goal sums us up. The guy’s gone through three challenges and has just brushed us off. When it becomes physical, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, the white flag comes out.

“Whenever we come under pressure, we collapse. Anyone who has seen us over the last couple of years will have seen that as soon as it gets tough to many go missing.”

Jewell apologised to supporters and promised that he will turn things around: “I’m hugely embarrassed and I’m sorry. They’ve been fantastic for this club. I’ll take it on the chin, I know it’s down to me. I’m hurting every bit as much as they are.

“They were singing ‘we want our money back’ and they deserve it. These fans that turn up week-in and week-out, home and away, they deserve better. I think I deserve better than what I’m getting from the players as well. I’m determined that we will eventually get it right.”

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson was unsurprisingly delighted: “It was as comfortable as it could possibly be when they went down to nine men, but even before that the most pleasing thing for me was the first half because for 20 minutes we just carved them open and got four quick goals.”

What can I say except totally disgusted.........the whole team with few exceptions should be fined at least two weeks wages, you can't blame the ref for all the goals, playground defending cost us dear.

Thank you Bobble!

Guentchev, please stop spouting such misery, we are real fans whether we're angry or looking for positives and whether we slept or not.

Premiertown - the players wouldn't play for Jim, then they wouldn't play for Keane, they wouldn't play for Jose Mourinho at the moment. Chill out!

I think everyone who supports ITFC is disgusted with that performance. I can imagine ME is fuming because whether or not you think he' s invested enough money, whether you believe he should be at matches etc - it's his name and his company which is being made a laughing stock by those bunch of muppets. Rather than boycotting the game (which I have seen mentioned) why don't supporters remain absolutely and totally silent when players come out and only applaud those who deserve to wear the shirt. I would only applaud Stockdale, Chopra, Creswell, Andrews - personally unsure about Jet. Sometimes silence is a better way showing how we feel.

Oh I forgot my last rant of the day - strip lead bitter of the captaincy immediately he's not fit to wear it - then sell him. Arm band to Andrews

dugoutdave, how will silence be different from any other game? I have seen many highs and lows over the years (including conceding 10 at Fulham) but this is up there with the worst because we are not learning from our mistakes. Rightly, our defence has taken flak for the ease with which they are by-passed but few criticise the midfield for not protecting them better. We desperately need pace in the team and, in that respect, not even Jimmy Bullard would not be the answer. Hopefully, at least, we will have got our season's quota of bad luck (offside goals, penalty decision, Martin's red card, deflected goal) out of the way in a game we were going to lose easily anyway. Can't really think of any positives apart from Stockdale and Andrew's goal because even others exonerated on here Chopra (didn't get a kick again) and Cresswell (didn't defend well but did at least care) were not great.

Arrrrrgh so frustrating and upsetting! Losing is bad enough but getting thrashed and humiliated be peterborough is beyond words! Being a norwich born town fan is tough and fun but atm they are just laughing at us and I hate it but still proud of this club and will never stop supporting it but something has to be done! I have faith in pj but he really needs to sort that defence out! Cresswell and stockdale deserve credit. I thought watching the defending against norwich was the worst I will ever see but yesterday I was proved wrong. Hurting right now.

We need a consistent formation (how about, I don't know, a generic 4-4-2 ?!?), another centre back to partner Iva when fit, a new RB to save Edwards the embarrassment of having to play out of position every week, a creative midfielder (bullard) and an engine room midfielder (i'd actually consider putting a bid in for Norris to try and get him back, regardless of the embarrassment). The rest of the team is good enough to push for promotion, but the inevitable low confidence will be the biggest hurdle now.

Sort it out Jewell.

We need to get somebody in on the staff who would drill into the players what it should mean to play for ipswich town, alan brazil, mariner, mills, beattie, holland, kuqi anybody.
Kuqi would have done better than anybody for us yesterday, because the shirt meant something to him and he always gave his best.
May not have been as talented as most on show yesterday, but i'd take hard work and graft any day of the week over these overpaid prima dona's.

I think ERICGATES Has hit the nail on the head we need some passionate players wearing our shirt. Still feel very ashamed and embarassed. I really hope PJ Gets them in training today and give them a rollocking they deserve nothing less. Going forward it's a massive week we need a lift and the only way we will get that is buying some new players and beating Leeds which will be like a cup final to us on recent form. I really hope Stoke stuff scum today!

Improving the defence is still the key to all of this.

Yes our midfield was poor again but they are so worried about whats happening behind them, and having to drop further and further back to help out, its pulling the whole team out of shape. Chopra and JET had precious little service or support as a result.

Other than Cresswell our defence is appallingly bad and this is what I am personally very angry about. It has been obvious since the end of last season we needed to rebuild the back line completely and it hasnt happened. That is a failure on Jwells part and one he must rectify this week if we are to avoid a relegation battle.

As for the players who are letting us down, I have considerable sympathy for Edwards. He gets a lot of stick but at the end of the day he is playing out of position and it shows. As for Delaney and Smith, if they never play in a blue shirt again it will be too soon for me!

My pleasure in succeeding in getting a live streaming to work was soon changed into surreal disbelief. Yes, like some others on here, this is right up there with the worst moments I've ever experienced as a Town supporter. We were very poor from 1-0 to 1-4, but actually for me regained a bit of pride with 9 men in the second half, when for a time it looked as if all record books would be broken and we were going to go down 12-1. I just hope this really was a "freak" [pardon the pun] performance. I don't like blaming outside circumstances, but on this occasion, that IS what contributed to the abnormal score. The officials WERE awful. I haven't re-checked the offsides yet, but most agree 2 or 3 goals were offside. The first sending off was NOT a sending off (a yellow card, maybe). The "penalty" was very clearly NOT a penalty. In other words, every decision that could go wrong for us did. I think this was a 1-3 or at worst 1-4 defeat, which is bad enough in itself. But it's now up to PJ and the team now to prove that, with the support of ME. Otherwise, it looks very much as if Naarwich's status as Nr. 1 club in the region will be unchallenged, with both Colchester and Ipswich fighting for the remains in League 1. Time to get behind the team like never before and hope they can respond.

PJ can sort this out. Unfortunately he inherited a shocking team with only Norris and Macauley worthy of staying but no-fault of Jewell they were allowed to run down their contracts. The majority of the rest were keane wastes. The better players thus season are pj 's - cresswell, stockdale, chopra, poss jet, an improved Martin. His one and biggest mistake is not sorting the defence or replacing the rb. Give him time and he'll address these issues.

Yes I agree with drew, Edwards, Delaney, leadbitter & smith can't play for town again they are all utter dog pooooo!!
I would send stockdale back too!
How jewell can give leadbitter the captains armband is Unbelivable he is not a leader.
It means we need 5 replacements, don't know who would want to play for us now.
We give posh their easiest win ever we gave them 7 easy goals & help from the ref & linesman. Thanks a bunch!!
We are a laughing stock.

How long is Mr Evans going to put up with this rubbish ? I really hope Jewell sorts it out , and quick . I like Jewell and support him but football is a results business and i think if things havent improved by the end of November then P J could find himself unemployed . Martin Oneil to replace him ?

I don't blame Jewell in any of this, this club started to go into decline soon as Evans took over, at the time we had just hammered Bristol City 6-0. Jewell has had the rug taken from beneth him with the departures of Wickham, Norris, McCaulley and Bullard. Remember it was Jewell who bought Bullard in, otherwise we may already be in Div 1.

In my view it looks like Evans is not giving the funds to find decent replacements, only Choppra and JET have really cost anything. Where is the Wickham money? Until funds are made available (more so for wages) we will not attract players who we want. At the end of the day its money which motivates these days, not club tradition or even the prosect of promotion.

We need to offer decent money to a CB, Bullard and striker. I do not understand why Evans doesn't, surely higher attendances would reap back the outlay. In my opinion Evans has lost intrest in ITFC. The sooner he sells up to someone who cares then we will go no-where. By the Evans take that bumbling clown Clegg with you when you finally go!
