Jewell: We Had the Better Chances
Jewell: We Had the Better Chances
Saturday, 24th Sep 2011 17:25

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his side had the best chances in their entertaining 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough. The Town manager was pleased with the point against one of the division’s pacesetters.

Jewell said: “I thought we had the better opportunities, if I’m being honest. Certainly in the first half we had two gilt-edged ones - Sonko’s header and Chopra’s volley.

“We were a little bit disappointed to go in 0-0 at half-time. We knew they’d come at us a little bit in the second half and I think there were two teams trying to win a match. How it stayed 0-0 I don’t quite know.”

The Liverpudlian thought his players continued the good work from the 3-0 victory over Coventry earlier in the week: “We tried to take confidence from the performance on Monday, we want to pass the ball, and we did pass the ball, and we moved it, but at times we just didn’t pick the right pass.

“Certainly in the second half, we had opportunities to have a shot and we were trying to walk the ball in a little bit.

“But to come to Middlesbrough, who could have gone top of the league today, and push them all the way, is a good performance.”

Jewell was pleased with recent Boro target Jason Scotland’s performance alongside Michael Chopra up front: “I thought Jason was terrific. He held the ball up and it’s so important if you’re going to play that way that the front two players have got to look after the ball.

“We’ve created good situations, good chances in the first half and certainly situations in the second half, but we probably didn’t make the keeper work hard enough.”

The Trinidadian made way before the end with a knock, but his manager doesn’t expect it to be a significant problem: “He just got a kick, the lad stamped on him accidentally and hopefully he’ll be OK in the morning.”

Boro boss Tony Mowbray's thoughts on the game didn't differ too much from his Town counterpart's view: “I’m sure Paul came up and said he was frustrated as well. It was a game in which they had some chances and I think the way both teams were set up it was going to a little bit end to end.

“I wanted us to play the way we’ve been playing and not worry too much about them. But with the quality of the likes of Bullard, Andrews and Bowyer, all experienced Premier League players, we couldn’t get enough pressure on them to force the issue.

“They had a bit of possession, they created a few chances and yet I felt late on [we had opportunities].

“The boy Chopra had a great opportunity to win the game for them, whether that was a good save or not, and so did Scott McDonald late on when he hit the sidenetting in the six-yard box.

“It could have gone either way, that’s how I felt it was. They’ll be disappointed not to have scored. We could be sitting here talking about a 1-0 win or a 1-0 loss.

"I’ll take the positives of a clean sheet. That’s three clean sheets on the bounce and that’s not a bad platform to give yourself to try and win football matches.”

bloomfield, i moaned about ingimarson, and ellington, and so far there has not been one glimpse of me being proved wrong, i see all the positives there are to see, real progress is being made now with the team. trouble is too many on here are negative for the sake of being negative, there is negative in everything if you want to look for it. for the ignorant ones, i will spell out the facts,ok these are not opinions , they are facts, the goal keeper is improved from last season, the defence is much stronger. the midfield is stronger and our attack is much more potent.... add to the fact we have nt conceded in two games, facts or not?
and to all those edwards knockers, he is not a natural full back i agree, but he is excellent going forward and for those of us who understand about football, some times the best form of defence is offence. at the moment it is working, wont be long before we see a full back in though. COYB

good result, let's hope we can keep it going against West Ham, I think if PJ can keep a similar line up week in and week out then hopefully the team will gel!

Must admit there were some people on here after the pool game smarting about us being relegation fodder which to be fair was absolutely ridiculous. But we are still a work in progress but good to see we are getting better as we go, it is afterall, a marathon not a sprint. Great result and hopefully this next week will be the spring board for a really good season.

The people making these negative comments clearly didn't watch the same match that i did. Lots of positives to take away from this performance.

Same line up and formation for West Ham please. The only way is up. COYB

Very positive performance. MB are a very good side and we came away with a point at their homeground.
Team seems to be gelling much more!
West Ham will find it difficult against us on Saturday. I could see us sneaking a
0-0 draw again!

Saw the 2nd half via stream.Looked a real threat.Scotland menacing.
Definitely win more than less with displays like that.Great 0-0 game, great point as Boro were equally threatening.

Town played a good game again on Saturday vs Middlesborough. That is two good games in a row.
At last the team is playing to its potential-great!
Now I hope they can keep that form going with another good game vs West Ham tomorrow.
So goodluck SuperBlues vs Hammers-keep playing well-the way we know you can & you know you can!

DEMOCRACY OUT, DEMOCRACY OUT... oh, er... Sorry- pmason did you mean to say that opinion is a key element of democracy?

I'd agree with that, of course- shall we have a vote to see if Pmason is a menace to this board? (Even democracies have punishments for those that continually subvert the perceived good of the many...)

Actually though, i'd vote to keep him and Bobble/woppit, too- i quite enjoy the banter!

I suspect that Pmason is nothing but a budgie fifth-columnist masquerading as a town fan for the purposes of wumming. Personally, I just disregard everything he/she posts.

Who said this was a democratic forum pmason!? A forum by definition is to share ideas but quite frankly, your idea of sacking Jewell is ferkin' ridiculous as i'm sure 95% of Town fans would agree. So i guess this brings into question not only your opinion but also whether you're an actual Town fan?

On another note, our bench. I've noticed we hav no central midfielders on our bench recently. Am i right in thinking if one of the diamond gets injured we'll have to change the system to a flat 4 across the middle? Seems a shame given its fledgling success. What about Hyam? Surely he could do a role with the experience around him that formation?

"Who said this was a democratic forum pmason"

I did !!

unless of course, this is a one sided boring pointless obsession fest for keeping JEWELL as manager ? which at times it is

i support town and have for many years, but that doesnt count for nothing. All that counts is tomorrow nights result and this years league.
I dont believe in JEWELL and he has made more mistakes than keane and magilton in his 9 months in charge. He's assembled a team of has-beens that wont last the year and certainly wont get us promoted.

so in my opinion(which is my own opinion) JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT JEWELL OUT
