Swansea Set to Move for Andrews
Swansea Set to Move for Andrews
Monday, 12th Dec 2011 11:12

On-loan midfielder Keith Andrews is reportedly set to join Swansea City from Blackburn Rovers once his spell at Portman Road comes to an end in January. The Swans are claimed to be willing to pay £2 million for the 31-year-old, who has scored eight goals for the Blues since joining on a temporary basis in August, although other reports suggest no fee will be involved.

Swansea and fellow Premier League side Wigan have both been linked with the Republic of Ireland international for some months, while Blues boss Paul Jewell has also made it clear he would like to keep Andrews, who has been standing in as skipper during Grant Leadbitter’s absence.

The Dubliner joined Blackburn from the MK Dons for £1.3 million in August 2008 and the League One side are entitled to 10% of the profit when the one-time Wolves and Hull City man is sold.

Meanwhile, defender Danny Collins, who returns to Stoke after Saturday’s home game with Derby, is again being linked with a switch to Wolves when the transfer window opens in January.

As with Andrews, Jewell would like to keep him at Portman Road but the Blues are unlikely to be able to compete with Premier League clubs in terms of wages and the transfer fee.

Collins, who like Andrews has 18 months remaining of his current contract, has admitted he faces a big decision when his 93-day loan comes to an end after the weekend.

This realy isn't bad news.

He's done well for us, but splashing cash on a 31 year old who is 'good but not great' is really not something we should be doing.

not fussed at all, he statistically deceives because of his goals tally much like Leadbitter and his 90% completion rate on his backwards passing. He's okay, but not worth 2million and we could do with a lot more youthful energy in the centre.

Collins I deem a more problematic loss

Cant believe there are numpties using this as an exscuse to have a pop at jewell.I'm sure that if he didn't have 18 months left on a contract at Blackburn he would have been a lot less than £2mil.Need to find a similar type midfielder who is'nt getting a game but thats not an easy call, personally cant think of one.

Without loans this club would have been buried long ago so don't knock it. Over the years we have benefited from a few good players who we would not have been able to afford otherwise. Colbeck, Gio.

Andrews reminds me a bit of Norris as whilst not the greatest player seems to have a knack of getting goals from midfield. Of the two i would take Collins as I think CB is where we have least cover. Still think we need a proper RB

I see Townsend has fallen out with Rednapp, looked decent when here last time would like to see him back.

cunning stunt completely agree with you. Also, if Jewell could bring in Bullard when we needed him last season and Andrews when we needed him this season, I trust him to find another midfield tallisman which we can hopefully keep!

Even so, let's not all get depressed yet, neither andrews or collins are confirmed exits yet.

PJ can do without our advice on this. He'll know what Andrews is worth to the club and will ignore the press hype that Swansea are prepared to bid £2m (Blackburn will just love this!). Sitting on the bench at some Premier club won't suit Andrews' World Cup aspirations. If he's not even considered good enough for lowly Blackburn, what are higher Premiership thinking!

Soon after PJ arrived said he wasnt going to make wholesale changes or have many players on loan.Has done both but still failed to address the losses of RB Wright and right CH Mc Cauley;as well as changing almost the entire backroom staff.True he did get in two right footed centre halves who were both free agents
but Ingimarsson doesn't look good enough for this division and Sonko although much better is a bit erratic.
The loss of Collins and Andrews will need addressing urgently but Andrews looks more of a front player to me as midfield displays not convincing.
Need a midfielder who can track back quickly,a right back so that Carlos can worry opponents left back from his natural position, and if we cant persuade Danny to return a steady left centre back;so Mr Jewell still has a great deal to do to stop teams scoring so easily against us.
By the way notice on club website "BUY PLAYER FOR CHRISTMAS" !!! ???
not sure whether they are asking us to chip in for the January sales or are offloading some of the rubbish acquired in recent seasons.

Inevitable, but doesn't mean to say its going to happen. Playing regularly, captaincy and presumeably on a decent screw could possibly make him stay. Lets hope Collins stays as well, although I don't see it. With the documented problems he's had, I could imagine him wanting to move to be closer to his family.

jewell must bribe him and hope to god we win agains derby and we can keep him

The first thing we need in January is a proper holding midfielder, so that the opposition aren't getting free runs at the back four and so that the defenders have a straightforward passing option. We have needed that player for years. Andrews isn't that player. Mind you, it would be nice if he'd score a few more goals before he leaves!...

Not disastrous news - a good time to start to build a quality young side & gradually offload loanees & then old-timers. Apart from his goals you can see why he's not rated by a future championship team

@Phil - slightly off topic but I was wondering if you could do a piece to recognise our very own Kevin Painter and his achievement at the weekend, he is a massive town fan and I was with him in the practice room Saturday after our win, he was well chuffed for the blues, now he is a pdc major title holder. Thanks

Never got the impression his heart was here. Not overly concerned. Commeth tge hour, commeth Bullard. Time to stand up, be counted and get back to goal scoring.

Good going forward but not convincing defence wise.Good luck to him buts its not all bad news.Bullard to regain his form and PJ to bring in a defensive minded midfielder to give the defence some support.May help balance the side?

Great pity but as many have said not a great surprise. All that would need to happen next is Fulham recall Stockdale and we would be in real trouble. Loan players have a part to play but we are far to dependant on them.
Great second half result on saturaday but with this news we are a long way from being out of the woods just yet.

Let's not be too negative and down on this. WE managed to keep Bullard when very few believed we could. Let's rely on the manager and owner to do what they think is right for the club. Andrews needs to play regularly and he won't do that with some of the moves being speculated.

Collins is a different matter, he now has a young child and a wife in the midlands who may well push him to move back locally nearer to her family.

Money is not everything

Hardly surprising. The squad is going to look a bit thin in the new year if we're not careful. What about Hyam, anyone? Tell the lad he's got 10 games to prove himself, and see if he's really up to it or not.

The guy is an enigma, because his goalscoring record is superb, yet his overall play doesn't impress. Reminds me so much of Tommy Miller, who was anonymous most games, but scored plenty of goals. Nevertheless, we don't have any other goalscoring midfielders

This is the problem with loan signings. Unless there is a realistic hope of securing the player on a permanant deal, it is nothing more than a sticking plaster solution, that sets us back again when the player eventually departs.

We need PERMANANT signings in January.

Will be a big loss if this happens.

PJ will need to bring in someone to play alongside Bowyer/Bullard cos Leadbitter is just not good enough & hopefully he'll be gone come january too.

Start thinking NOW PJ!!!

I said the day Andrews arrived at Ipswich that he was just using us to kick start his career and put himself in the shop window. We were NEVER going to sign him.

He's helped us , but loanees, as others have stated is not the way to build for the future.
